I know it's not all that well known yet, but I thought the premiere would have more than 600,000 viewers.

It lost about 50,000 viewers, but it doubled it's 18-49 demo, so BBC America has to be pretty happy.

The Space channel in Canada is a co-partner with BBC America on this show. I think having a co-financier along with the critical acclaim that Tatiana is getting will ease the burden of the so-so Saturday ratings. I think BBC America is still not a really popular channel and not alot of young people will be watching Orphan Black live on Saturday nights.

Re: Orphan Black (BBC America) - Season 2 Thread - Premieres - 4/19/14

For BBC America, 0.620 million viewers on a Saturday night is very good, especially since Orphan Black is a co-production. Atlantis is also a co-production, and S1 averaged well under 0.300 million viewers, but was renewed for S2, so Orphan Black S2 is off to a great start.

Since the 18-49 demo determines ad rates, BBC America must be thrilled that the overall viewer increase included a 97% increase in the 18-49 demo (compared to the S1 average).

The really good news is that, barring a massive collapse over the next few weeks, a renewal for S3 is almost a certainty. While the seasons are only 10 episodes each, knowing that viewership in the US is increasing and getting a renewal for S3 could help sell the show to more countries, which generates even more revenue for BBC America.

Provided they keep the quality at around the same level, this show can grow it's audience season after season like Breaking Bad did. Not saying the ratings and popularity will be anything near Breaking Bad, but just that it has a lot of momentum to grow - especially with even more people taking advantage of Netflix.

EW says 785,000 viewers, up from the S1 premiere.

Re: Orphan Black (BBC America) - Season 2 Thread - Premieres - 4/19/14

The 0.785 million number is the total number of viewers for the 9pm premiere and the two repeats (12am and 3am). The 9pm premiere had 0.620 million, which is actually down from the 9pm S1 premiere (0.684 million).

However, the S2 premiere increasing 65% in viewers compared to the S1 average (0.375 million at 9pm) and the S1 finale (0.376 million at 9pm) is great and should please BBC America.

They didn't name the series very well, the title doesn't give a clue as to what type of genre it fits.

Although if they would of named it 'the clones' or something like that, it would of technically been a spoiler because we don't find out Sarah/Beth is a clone until episode 2 of season 1

That's an odd criticism. I can think of all kinds of shows that don't indicate a genre.

Castle (could be a show set in medieval times ala Reign)
The Mindy Project (could be a sci-fi show about a robot named Mindy)
The Blacklist (could be a comedy about a guy who is going through all of his exes that he added to his "blacklist")
Firefly (could be an animated cartoon about Firey the Firefly)
Cheers (could be a drama about the competitive world of high school cheerleading)
The 100 (could be a game show where 100 contestants compete for a big prize)
Seinfeld (could be a coming-of-age story about a young comedian trying to make it in the big city)

and on and on.

....next on "Super Sci-Fi Happy Fun Hour".... is that better? Do much of any shows really indicate their genres in their titles, or do you think they do because you already have a familiarity with a show and can make those connections?

It's an uphill battle for viewers on BBCAmerica in the first place. I'm just giving reasons why a critically-acclaimed show has a tough time picking up new viewers. It's a terrible name that doesn't give "indicators" as to the genre for uninitiated and casual watchers.

That may work in it's favour actually. There's little fear of shows like this flying under the radar of sci-fi fans - generally speaking, they're usually "in the know" about these shows. However, people who aren't into Sci-fi would be scared off if it's prominent in the title and marketing of the show - which would be a shame as the show isn't really heavy on the sci-fi at all and could easily be enjoyed by a wider audience.

Orphan Black is a great name for a show.

Alison trying to get away from the kidnappers in this past episode was hilarious. Tatiana is awesome.

More great ratings news for Orphan Black -- the Live+3 audience doubled the Live+SD audience (the figures below are the respective totals for the 9pm premiere + same-night repeats):

Live+SD: 0.785 million
Live+3: 1.577 million

Can't wait for tomorrow night's new episode!

Do you think people watch shows based on their title? What about all of the shows I listed that don't indicate anything about the show from the title?

You listed all broadcast network series with much greater promotion and visibility. It's a much tougher obstacle to overcome on BBCAmerica, a channel with Dr. Who and that is about it.

I have to wait and watch this via OnDemand because I don't get BBC America in HD, but I can watch the OnDemand episodes in HD. It's weird, but I only have to wait less than 24 hours after the original airing to watch it.

Let's just say he's not completely off base. The name did nothing for me initially and I had no plans to watch it. It's only because the title kept appearing in my RSS feeds that I started to take notice. Once that happens, I'll start reading the opening paragraph of articles to see what's what, reading more if I find it interesting. Once I did that, I put it in my DVR schedule (still not watching) and started reading the S1 threads here. That was finally enough to convince me to start watching them. But yeah, coming across something that said there'd be a new show called "Orphan Black" did nothing for me. It's descriptive, but not particularly enticing. I think we can agree it isn't "Star Trek:The Next Generation" (which occupies the far end of titles that are both descriptive and enticing for the target audience.

Thinking back, I skipped The Good Wife for a long time because nothing screamed out to me to watch it. Sounds like, "A politician has a fall and we follow the trials and tribulations of the wife who stands by him." I'm sure it's fine, but my viewing schedule is already busy. It's only reading about it that I decided to give it a chance and was rewarded.

So while I agree titles aren't everything, they're something. Something has to pull people in. Most people aren't going to research every new show on TV.

Personally, my first assumption last year was that Mrs S took Kira. So, it wasn't really a surprise when that turned out to be the case.

Two episodes in and I can safely safe that I have seen enough of Jordan Gavaris' ass. I don't really need to see it again.

Nice out with psycho copy.

Suddenly the Diad seems a nice and cozy place!

I'm still not convinced it fits, but I won't be surprised if Felix ends up being Sarah's handler. He just seems to be acting well off at times (and I'm not talking about the painting chaps).
