Re: SNL -- 01/18/14 -- H: Drake -- MG: Drake
Without having to take the time to research it, does anyone know off the top of their head if this season is record breaking for double duty hosts? At least in modern times?
First episode of 2014, and we've already had three double duty host/musical guests - Miley Cyrus, Gaga, Drake. It's almost a miracle it isn't more, as Katy Perry might/should've been, while literally any other week of the year Timberlake would've unquestionably been... which, thinking about it now, I'd actually go ahead and count Timberlake as a half. So it's more like 3.5 double duties so far this season.
Drake... I can't take seriously. Never have been able to - I watched Degrassi back then, and if you did and can buy wheelchair bound Jimmy as a street-wise rapper, well... you've got better suspension of disbelief than I. All the more the reality of it, where one knows he was a *Canadian* child actor? That doesn't jive with this image of a tough, hardened hip-hop musician - which although I admittedly don't follow his music to know for sure, seems to be how he's been portrayed.
It will be *very* interesting if they touch on any of that - a sketch mocking the idea of an actor playing a disabled Canadian kid becoming the next Chris Brown type. The absurdity factor is definitely there for material.

Drake's been in the news here here a lot of late, but it's mostly about his involvement with Toronto sports. To be honest, I don't know a thing about him as an actor or as a musician.

Melissa McCarthy again in 2 weeks? I think she has hosted 2 straight seasons.
Bill Murray liked the Wiig era cast

Bill Murray liked the Wiig era cast
For every person who complains about how "Saturday Night Live" used to be funny, there's another person who realizes that the show's still doing great work (albeit sometimes inconsistently). In fact, Bill Murray thinks the recently graduated "SNL" cast -- the Kristen Wiig era, essentially -- is the best one since the original Not Ready for Primetime Players.

In other SNL-related news, my wife and I just walked past The Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club here in San Antonio and guess who's on the marquee this weekend?
Finesse Mitchell.

Drake knows his lines. I don't recall any host with that much dialogue who wasn't glued to the cue cards. Even if it wasn't that funny.

Skipping this one. Really hate Drake. He literally sounds like someone gave a mic to a retarded person to mumble into one slowly pronounced word at a time.

The Before They Were Stars was pretty funny. Rick Ross was the red tellatubby. Flava Flav in The Wonder Years.
Was the new girl in every sketch other than the cold open? I guess with Drake it makes sense, but it really comes off like SNL is really trying to put her out there to show how not racist they are now that they hired the black girl.
That being said, she was pretty good.
Drake was a good host, but perhaps he should skip being the musical guest.

Drake did an excellent job with what he was given. Best part for me was McKinnon's Bieber, resolution rap, and the Bisset bit on Update.

As a rapper, he was the Canadian poseur that I thought he was, but as a host, he was quite acceptable. Liking the new girl so far - black, white or whatever, just be funny - it's the only attribute most of this cast is really lacking.

I wasn't expecting anything but I thought Drake did pretty good as the host. He put everything in it and was good with what he was given.
