Futurama cancelled again....

http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/22/42...s-on-june-19th

Futurama is no stranger to being cancelled, and it unfortunately looks like the axe has fallen yet again — Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Comedy Central has declined to renew the show, making the seventh season the last go for the Planet Express crew (note: link contains season seven spoilers). While the show has a loyal and devoted fanbase, it also has had more ups and downs than most programs experience since its debut on Fox way back in 1999. Futurama was the victim of erratic scheduling until the plug was finally pulled (for the first time) in 2003.

Comedy Central led the show's first revival in 2007 after reruns of the Fox episodes on Adult Swim proved popular — four straight-to-DVD movies were released, and each was eventually broken into four individual episodes which comprised the show's fifth season. The network then gave the show two more 26-episode seasons, each of which was split down the middle, with the final 13-episode run scheduled to begin on June 19th.

"I THINK THESE EPISODES ARE THE BEST ONES WE'VE EVER DONE."

"I felt like we were already in the bonus round on these last couple of seasons, so I can't say I was devastated by the news," executive producer David X. Cohen told EW. Despite Cohen and creator Matt Groening's acceptance of Futurama's final fate, both left the door open for yet another revival. The show's producers said they were exploring options for a new home, but there was nothing serious yet to report. "We would love to continue. We have many more stories to tell," says Groening. "But if we don't, this is a really great way to go out... I think these episodes are the best ones we've ever done."

Re: Futurama cancelled again....

This past season felt like a knock off of Futurama, so no big shock, hopefully it ends well

Fox should pick it back up given these new cable channels they are supposed to be rolling out.

Put it on FX with Archer now that everything else is moving to FXX.

I just realized I haven't watched Futurama since the Bender's Game DTV movie.

You missed a few excellent episodes when it initially returned, they're on Netflix.

S05E07 - The Late Philip J Fry
S05E10 - The Prisoner of Benda

especially come to mind.

Good idea on the FXX thing. Whoa, I can't believe it's been six years since this was revived..... That must have just been when it was announced and no episodes aired for another couple years right??

Re: Futurama cancelled again....

Well, if this forum is any indication nobody's watching these. I remember a lot of hoopla when Comedy Central brought it back, but lately there haven't even been threads for new episodes.

Re: Futurama cancelled again....

Certain shows just don't have weekly discussion threads. I think it got decent ratings for a CC central show. I just think it was too expensive.

Re: Futurama cancelled again....

The post Made-For-TV movie episodes have not been as good as the first four seasons, but they were still decent. Still, it's probably a good time to call it now. I haven't enjoyed a season of the Simpsons in years and I don't feel like seeing another once-great show go that route.

Prisoner of Benda ranks up with the best episodes of the series.

Bender's Big Score was released in Nov. 2007.

That's pretty funny - I haven't seen that one in a while. Re-watching seasons 4-9 on DVD recently just made me remember how good the show was and how good it isn't now.

Same with Futurama - those first few seasons were perfect.

Re: Futurama cancelled again....

I'm really glad Futurama got the second chance that it did. While there were a few legitimate clunkers ("That Darn Katz!", "Naturama"), the show maintained the spirit of the original throughout. It also provided what I would say is the high point of the entire series in "The Late Phillip J. Fry".

I'll miss it, but I'd rather see it go out on top than become a pale imitation like the Simpsons, change the characters too much like Family Guy, or just repeat itself forever like South Park.

Re: Futurama cancelled again....

The Simpsons has actually been very strong the last couple seasons, for those who gave up on it during the leaner years.

Bummer. While the new episodes as a whole weren't as good as the old, I still greatly enjoyed the show.

I used to like Futurama a lot when it originally aired but I honestly haven't watched it that much since it returned to Comedy Central.

I agree. The Simpsons hit a slump around season fourteen or so that lasted for quite a while but it has actually gotten a lot better the past few years. Personally I've pretty much always enjoyed it to some extent though even though I realize some seasons weren't as good as others.

I've caught some here and there, and if by strong you mean comparable to something from season 11 or so, then OK. But it's still quite weak when compared to the classic stuff.

Re: Futurama cancelled again....

The new Futurama episodes were really good. But I'm satisfied. This doesn't really bum me out.

I wonder if we'll still get occasional 90 minute movies.

It doesn't get mentioned much. The colors on Futurama have always been really savory. And the Comedy Central episodes look orgasmic in HD.

I think they need to stay away from the 90 minute stuff. Their strong suit was the 22 minute episode and the movies really exposed that IMO.

Re: Futurama cancelled again....

Yeah, I didn't really like the movies. For some reason, I just got bored partway through and was waiting for the end. Show works better as 22 minute stories.

Re: Futurama cancelled again....

It had a good run. I think Groening should just let it go.
