Sense8 (Netflix) -- Season 2 Thread -- premieres 5/5/17

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/V8vd0AjdNbQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Picking up where season one left off, Capheus (Toby Onwumere), Kala (Tina Desai), Lito (Miguel Angel Silvestre), Nomi (Jamie Clayton), Riley (Tuppence Middleton) , Sun (Donna Bae), Will (Brian J. Wright) and Wolfgang (Max Riemelt) come together both physically and mentally, plunged into the middle of each other's tragedies and triumphs. On the run from Whispers (Terrence Mann), and forced to question their very identity, it's a matter of survival as the Sensates must find a way to live with, understand and protect one another against all odds. Lana Wachowski, Grant Hill and J. Michael Straczynski serve as Executive Producers on the series.
11 episode second season. The "Christmas Special" (the first 2 episodes of the season) premiered earlier in the year.

Re: Sense8 (Netflix) -- Season 2 Thread -- premieres 5/5/17

I'm halfway through season 2 now, so mild spoilers below for the first few episodes:

I'm enjoying it so far, though it gets very corny at times and feels like it's moving more slowly than season 1. But I would say if you liked season 1, you'll probably enjoy season 2 as well.

My biggest criticism is the mandatory musical/rave/party/sex montage in every episode. It's like the Wachowskis are saying, "So you didn't like the rave scene in Matrix Reloaded? Well suck on this!" I mean, I get why they do it--to show the interconnectedness of the cluster and to show how joyous those connections can be, but it does get a bit tedious. And they used that "What's Goin' On" song yet again.

At first I didn't think I would like the new Capheus, but he definitely grew on me. He has a lower-key energy about him compared to the original actor, but the writing seems to have adjusted to that as well and it works.

I kinda like Nomi and Neet's hacker sidekick, Bug, because he's such a goof. Though their hacks are used too often as an easy solution to plot obstacles, but that's SOP for a lot of shows nowadays.

I'm kinda confused over the whole Jonas/Angelica/Whispers backstory.

My favorite of the cluster is Sun, and I like where her storyline is going at the moment. Next favorite is probably Wolfgang, and his arc is interesting, too, with the new woman in the picture.

I like that they are starting to find more sense8s and that increases the potential danger to them.

I finished the second season, and I didn't even realize it. They definitely drop you off on a major cliffhanger. Only 11 episodes?

Overall, I enjoyed it. It's more of the same from season 1. If you didn't like that, don't bother with this season. I enjoy most of the characters so I'll continue to enjoy the show.

So much for thinking about watching the show. Wonder if it was too expensive.

Yes, it was expensive (as was The Getdown, which also just got the axe). It just wasn't a buzz worthy show though. And having buzz worthy shows is Netflix's bread and butter.

That seems unusually fast for them, but just not enough eyes in the last month I guess.

No surprise though.

Re: Sense8 (Netflix) -- from Wachowskis & J. Michael Straczynski -- Series Thread

I wonder if the Christmas Special did more harm than good. It was nearly 2 years between seasons, and the Christmas Special was a bit of a stop-gap, but it really broke with the "binge" method a lot of people use to watch shows on Netflix. If the whole 2nd season had premiered in December, starting with the Christmas Special, it might've been different. As it is, I think the Christmas Special sucked up a lot of the hype, and the rest of the second season premiered without much fanfare.

Ironically, I would've maybe been happier if it had ended after the first season, as that would've made a quality standalone series with a good ending. The second season finale is too much of a cliffhanger.

I sorta wish Netflix would allow for a final movie or "wrap-up" episode for the shows they cancel, to tie up loose ends. I could see Sense8 get to a good ending place with another 2 hours to do so. It'd also make the back catalog a bit easier to recommend to people if they knew it ended on a good note, because otherwise people like TomOpus will simply skip it entirely. I understand why Networks don't do this often; they're more concerned with time slot performance and aren't going to re-run a cancelled show, but considering Netflix is going to continue to have this show up for people to watch anytime, another 2 hour investment might be a good idea.

Well that's too bad. I was looking forward to where they were potentially heading next season regarding more contacts with other sensates/clusters. I wonder if they could continue the story in a comic book or something?

That's a thought. J. Michael Straczynski is no stranger to comics.

Look how long its been out , look at how few comments are here about the new season. It has no freaking point or real story hardly. It was a bore fest that had high production values. Should've seen this coming, well I did say it last year. It was no story beautiful mess.

Re: Sense8 (Netflix) -- from Wachowskis & J. Michael Straczynski -- Series Thread

I'm disappointed, but I get it. As previously mentioned, this was an expensive show that didn't get enough eyeballs (or social media traction). I didn't feel it had "no story" but it did have issues. That said, it was definitely a beautiful show to look at. I'd love to have it in UltraHD/HDR BluRay as I'd still rewatch it knowing they didn't get to finish the story. It had mostly likable actors in the various roles, although I wasn't a fan of the Capheus recasting for S2. It also felt that they were struggling to pull the story and production together (more like the Wachowski's, less like J. Michael Straczynski). It was an ambitious effort and I applaud them for that, but it just didn't completely come together.

I was talking with my wife today about the cancellation (we both like it) and I wondered how much of the country was turned off by the in your face LGBTQ aspects of the show. To a degree, I don't mind being confronted with my biases so I can reconsider (or maybe even just consider) them, but I don't think that's something the masses are necessarily looking for when they unwind with a TV show. It's a touchy thing, usually handled by winning people over first and then deftly handling the confrontation. I gave the show a C+ grade on how they handled it (too much confrontation, to little winning over).

Just in case there's anyone who wonders what's so "confrontational" about the show, I'll tell you. Hetero men have normally accepted Lesbian relationships on screen (and in life) much easier than male gay relationships/sexuality. This show put a male gay sexual relationship front and center. Given that the show also had transgender characters and what visually appeared as a female gay relationship (two women, though one used to be a man), I imagine it might be a lot for some to deal with. So whatever SciFi story there was to be told, for me the importance of telling it always felt it was no more important than showcasing these LGBTQ characters to tell it. For better or worse.

I contrast that to what happened on Billions, where they essentially had a character who happened to be LGBTQ and it never caused the story to veer from the core story the show has been telling. There was just a different type of character involved in the story. Maybe bigger social confrontations like Sense8 are necessary to move society towards a more accepting direction, but just for unwinding while enjoying a show, I found the Billions version of exposure much easier to digest.

Anyway, RIP Sense8. Here's hoping that J. Michael Straczynski and the Wachowski's put out other interesting fare in the future.

It doesn't break my heart.

The second season really became an overly preachy ACLU commercial really quickly. I would like to know how the arc was supposed to end though.

Re: Sense8 (Netflix) -- from Wachowskis & J. Michael Straczynski -- Series Thread

This was one of my favorite shows I wish it could've lasted to the end. It wasn't a show that just anyone could get into. Netflix is sort of weird that they don't really promote they're original content as much as other content providers. If something isn't super popular you might not know what a show or movie is about.

Hopefully they wrap things up in a way that works as a series finale, even if they leave open the possibility of more episodes.

As I wrote before, it makes a sort of sense for Netflix too, since if it ends on a solid note, it'll make the show a stronger catalog title for them going forward.

I don't think Xhamster has an idea of the budget this show requires. It's like when Notch proposed backing Psychonauts 2, then backed out when he realized the budget was 10x what he expected.
