The news you've all been waiting to hear....
American Horror Story: Coven hereby overfloweth, with the addition of Alexandra Breckenridge to its bewitching ensemble.
Series boss Ryan Murphy announced the casting Friday morning on Twitter.
Breckenridge of course was part of FX’s original Horror Story, playing the younger, um, more libidinal alter ego of Frances Conroy’s housekeeper Moira. She joins a Coven cast that includes fellow Horror Story alumni Jessica Lange, Denis O’Hare, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy, Evan Peters and Taissa Farmiga, as well as new blood Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Emma Roberts, Patti LuPone and Gabourey Sidibe.
Details on Breckenridge’s role were not immediately available, though that and other storyline information is bound to be conjured up when Horror Story: Coven holds court this afternoon at the Television Critics Assoc. press tour in Beverly Hills.

My wife and I finally finished the second season this week after being completely underwhelmed by it when we first tried watching it. I've got to say, though, that it does sort of pull together a bit in the final two episodes, and I did enjoy it overall, just not nearly as much as the first season.

Ryan Murphy revealed the set up for the next installment of American Horror Story during a Friday night event for Emmy voters. (Full disclosure: This reporter moderated the panel with cast and producers.) Coven will be a massive witch-off: Salem vs. voodoo. "The witches of Salem, the smart ones, got out very early and they were none of the ones who were burned," Murphy explained. "They all gravitated toward New Orleans, where they now live, and every generation has a great witch who has the most powers of them all, and that's called the Supreme. Ms. Jessica Lange is the Supreme."
"It really is about the witches of Salem pitted against voodoo witches," he continued. "It's been a centuries-long feud and it's up to Jessica Lange and Angela Bassett to mend the fence." (Bassett is playing Marie Laveau, "the voodoo queen of New Orleans" whose real-life reign lasted from the 1820s to the 1860s.) Obviously, expect things between the witches — and non-witches — to escalate quickly. "The witches are really sort of a great allegory and metaphor for any minority group that has been persecuted and has had to go underground and, finally, is like, 'You know what? Dammit, no. We're fighting back,' so that's what they do."
It looks like Coven will be set in both the present day and the 1830s. In addition to Bassett's Laveau, Kathy Bates is playing actual historical serial killer Marie Delphine LaLaurie, a.k.a. Madame LaLaurie, who Murphy called "the most evil woman ever." LaLaurie and her third husband tortured and killed several of their slaves in New Orleans in the 1830s, and were discovered only when firefighters broke down a door and discovered their gruesome murder chamber. Ick. But Murphy promised this season would be lighter than Asylum. "It's much more buoyant and comedic and crafty than last season, which was much darker by design because it was about heavy social stuff," he said, then laughed. "[Frances Conroy] plays Jessica's rival from high school times."
Other confirmed cast for Coven so far also includes Sarah Paulson, who will be playing Lange's daughter, Lily Rabe, Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga, Gabourey Sidibe, Emma Roberts, Patti LuPone, Denis O'Hare, Alexandra Breckenridge, and Jamie Brewer.

"comedic and crafty"?? I like the dark, brooding plotlines. If I want comedic and crafty I'll watch Shaun of the Dead.

Witches used to be a lot more entertaining in classic horror when they were treated as real villains. Now it's simply presented as an alternative religious lifestyle, greatly lessening the mystery and terror it can conjure.

Just saw an ad on FXX, at first I thought it was some sort of Twilight knock-off with the exception that it actually looked entertaining, then Jessica Lange showed up. Looking forward to it. I can't find the trailer online.

Kathy Bates as Delphine LaLaurie is the plotline I look forward to. I thought that she was going to be the focus of the season. I guess not...

I can't wait, I loved Season 1 AND 2. Everything about this show is fresh and exciting and I hope season 3 keeps it up.
A lot of people give season 2 a hard time, but I think it's brilliant. Rabe's character was classic. They better stick with that pitch black humor.

These are stand-alone stories each season, right? I've never seen the show, but the Coven promos look interesting.

That's correct. You should look at the show as a mini series every season. Alot of the same cast comes back to play completely different characters each season.

Yeah, it's more like a Twilight Zone setup but instead of every episode being a new story, every season is a new story.

Best thing about the single-season structure - is that they get to move through the story so quickly. There's not much room for filler. Every ten minutes or-so introduces, twists, or concludes a piece of the plot.
