Damn that was a great, super-tense episode. I had totally forgotten about that spy pen, which I suppose was the writers' intent. I was so worried for Martha after that was discovered and have no idea where that story goes next. The final scene, while I didn't follow all of the plan, was suspenseful and very entertaining. Second time they use a Fleetwood Mac song and it worked just as perfectly as in the pilot. I love this show.

That was a really great episode. They finally addressed whether or not Martha would be suspicious of her odd marriage with Clark. The one scene where the 3 agents found the bug was suspenseful and well made. I enjoyed Stan's chat with his son. It seems like he is actually trying to improve his relationship with his son.
That last scene with the abduction was one of my favorites. I still can't believe how fast Elizabeth shot that poor innocent woman. Oh yeah, Phillip's wig there was so so bad in that scene.

They really know how to set up a backup plan, having a backup apartment ready to go with some Pics of martha bought him some additional time. or bought her some time, I thought she was a goner this ep.
Elizabeth is cold, really cold.

Was the woman with the baguettes who Elizabeth shot in the head an innocent bystander? She spoke with a heavy South African accent, so she was not there by coincidence. Could she have been undercover as well and was just pretending to make a delivery?

Yeah, I thought she was more than an innocent bystander, but I'm not sure what. I also forgot who put the bug in the pen and why, but "Clark" is good at reading people, and he's got to figure out pretty soon things have turned south.

Now, if they didn't have the backup apartment for "Clark," would she have considered turning him in?

Wasn't the lady with the baguettes the same lady that was supposedly recruiting at the school where Elizabeth and the young guy were in the car in an earlier scene?

I don't think they've done a good job explaining the whole South African / University recruitment ring at all (or why the Soviets even care).

I think Philip and Elizabeth are headed towards a bad confrontation. He is still a spy, but also thinks of himself as an American and 100% thinks his daughter is an American where Elizabeth is different. I think he may threaten to kill her if she tries to turn Paige, or maybe even become a double agent to protect her. Elizabeth is much darker this year, almost purely evil if it wasn't for that trip she took her daughter on but even that was part of converting her.

Come on, it's the Americans. I'm usually so lost through the season that I've just come to accept it, but sure as hell enjoy the ride by the time the season is wrapped up. They really don't paint anything clear in this show.

Thanks for sharing the synopsis. I couldn't put it together while watching this episode (and the last) but I think it makes sense now.
I liked the bug reveal in the pen happening nonchalantly in the office. After so long with Martha's character treading water, it's nice to see some movement there.

I was as lost as everyone. Most of the times I catch everything, like the time people where asking about Elizabeth losing the list of spies, or stuff like that.
But in this episode I have no idea who the people at the end of the episode were. I didn't pay as much attention as usual, but I'm sure I wouldn't know either way.
I never thought the ANC was socialist.

Yeah, without the above-posted cheat sheet I would have had no idea either. They definitely could have been flushed it out at least a little bit more...

Even though it's listed right on the synopsis in the first post, I didn't realize this episode was directed by Noah Emmerich. He did a great job.
Here's an interesting interview that Alan Sepinwall did with Emmerich about directing the episode.

I don't think one could pick up all of this from simply watching this season of The Americans. I think a few critical, explanatory scenes have probably been left out over the course of this season about the South African connection. I get the feeling the network or someone is pressuring them to drop the exposition concerning minor characters and keep all the action scenes.
