Damn that was a great, super-tense episode. I had totally forgotten about that spy pen, which I suppose was the writers' intent. I was so worried for Martha after that was discovered and have no idea where that story goes next. The final scene, while I didn't follow all of the plan, was suspenseful and very entertaining. Second time they use a Fleetwood Mac song and it worked just as perfectly as in the pilot. I love this show.

Re: The Americans (S3E07) - "Walter Taffet" - 3/11/15

That was a really great episode. They finally addressed whether or not Martha would be suspicious of her odd marriage with Clark. The one scene where the 3 agents found the bug was suspenseful and well made. I enjoyed Stan's chat with his son. It seems like he is actually trying to improve his relationship with his son.

That last scene with the abduction was one of my favorites. I still can't believe how fast Elizabeth shot that poor innocent woman. Oh yeah, Phillip's wig there was so so bad in that scene.

They really know how to set up a backup plan, having a backup apartment ready to go with some Pics of martha bought him some additional time. or bought her some time, I thought she was a goner this ep.

Elizabeth is cold, really cold.

Was the woman with the baguettes who Elizabeth shot in the head an innocent bystander? She spoke with a heavy South African accent, so she was not there by coincidence. Could she have been undercover as well and was just pretending to make a delivery?

Yeah, I thought she was more than an innocent bystander, but I'm not sure what. I also forgot who put the bug in the pen and why, but "Clark" is good at reading people, and he's got to figure out pretty soon things have turned south.

Martha's gotta know that if she turned herself in for planting the bug, she could walk away from that relatively unscathed if she gave up "Clark." She'd probably surely lose her job, but I think she would avoid any serious jail time.

Now, if they didn't have the backup apartment for "Clark," would she have considered turning him in?

I also thought Martha was gone.

She will probably be gone soon. She can't stay alive for a long time.

Wasn't the lady with the baguettes the same lady that was supposedly recruiting at the school where Elizabeth and the young guy were in the car in an earlier scene?

I don't think they've done a good job explaining the whole South African / University recruitment ring at all (or why the Soviets even care).

Yeah kinda baffled by that.

I think Philip and Elizabeth are headed towards a bad confrontation. He is still a spy, but also thinks of himself as an American and 100% thinks his daughter is an American where Elizabeth is different. I think he may threaten to kill her if she tries to turn Paige, or maybe even become a double agent to protect her. Elizabeth is much darker this year, almost purely evil if it wasn't for that trip she took her daughter on but even that was part of converting her.

saw this on reddit:

Spoiler:
Apartheid was the racial segregation system in South Africa from the end of WW2 up into the mid-90s. Under this system, people were assigned to one of four racial categories. Only the white category had political power, citizenship, passports, and full education, along with better facilities and looser laws. Non-white people were assigned to specific areas to live (which were always much inferior to the white areas).

The African National Congress (ANC) was a socialist organisation created in response to racial crackdowns in South Africa; during the apartheid era it was the dominant anti-apartheid force. Nelson Mandela was the most famous leader of the ANC and was imprisoned by the apartheid-era government for it for ~30 years.

During the 1980s, many groups and nations around the world enforced sanctions on South Africa, demanding that it end apartheid. The Reagan government in the US was a notable exception to this and vetoed efforts to have UN sanctions applied, declaring itself allied with the South African government and opposed to the socialist ANC. The USSR supported the ANC and sanctions on South Africa.

In the show currently, Hans is one of those protesters, a white South African opposed to apartheid and active in an anti-apartheid group.

Todd is a student who is also part of those protest groups, but who Hans has identified as a spy. Todd wants to stage attacks under a red banner to damage the reputation of the anti-apartheid movement.

NcGobo is a black South African militant aligned with the ANC.

Venter is a South African agent aiming to assassinate NcGobo. The Center knows that NcGobo is a target.

Elizabeth recruits Hans, who identifies Todd as a spy. They then arrange for NcGobo to meet with Todd (who purports to be a left-wing anti-apartheid activist), knowing that Todd will report this and that Venter will be dispatched to their meeting. When Venter is drawn out, Philip attacks him on the street. Elizabeth identifies Venter's spotter/backup (the woman with the baguettes, who reveals her South African accent) and kills her.

She drives her van out. Philip drags Venter into it while NcGobo drags Todd into it. That's where we are now.

The personal upshot of this whole affair is that Paige's burgeoning conservativism has come into conflict with her anti-racism and sympathy for the anti-apartheid cause, providing an opportunity for her turn.

Wow, I did not gather all that with my attentive watching of this episode. Thanks for that synopsis!

Come on, it's the Americans. I'm usually so lost through the season that I've just come to accept it, but sure as hell enjoy the ride by the time the season is wrapped up. They really don't paint anything clear in this show.

Thanks for sharing the synopsis. I couldn't put it together while watching this episode (and the last) but I think it makes sense now.

I liked the bug reveal in the pen happening nonchalantly in the office. After so long with Martha's character treading water, it's nice to see some movement there.

I was as lost as everyone. Most of the times I catch everything, like the time people where asking about Elizabeth losing the list of spies, or stuff like that.

But in this episode I have no idea who the people at the end of the episode were. I didn't pay as much attention as usual, but I'm sure I wouldn't know either way.

I never thought the ANC was socialist.

Yeah, without the above-posted cheat sheet I would have had no idea either. They definitely could have been flushed it out at least a little bit more...

Even though it's listed right on the synopsis in the first post, I didn't realize this episode was directed by Noah Emmerich. He did a great job.

Here's an interesting interview that Alan Sepinwall did with Emmerich about directing the episode.

I don't think one could pick up all of this from simply watching this season of The Americans. I think a few critical, explanatory scenes have probably been left out over the course of this season about the South African connection. I get the feeling the network or someone is pressuring them to drop the exposition concerning minor characters and keep all the action scenes.
