Friday Night Lights -- Season Premiere -- "Expectations" -- 10/27/10
By djariya at 2011-01-01
Synopsis:
Spoiler:
13 episode final season (exclusively on Directv for now) NBC has not scheduled this yet for 2011, but it supposedly will air on NBC next summer. Was a little surprised that the NBC re-airs this past summer from season 4 pretty much got zero discussion here even though most here don't have Directv. Oh well.
Anyways, looking forward to it.

This is pretty cool. Behind the scenes of the season 5 promo shoot:
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rlCGZusTEhQ?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rlCGZusTEhQ?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
BTW, Jurnee Smollett, who plays Jess, also appears tonight on the CBS show The Defenders. Season 5 was shot and completed before she joined The Defenders.

Wish they aired this at 8 instead of 9. I have to record the midnight repeat.
Hopefully it doesn't get bogged down with too many hot-button issue stories (like abortion) that plagued S4. Just get back to the basics of Texas high school football and the town rivalry.

Cool promo shoot. Enjoy tonight's premiere guys -- looks like I'll be joining the discussion in 2011 sometime.

I think most here found other ways to watch it while it was on DirecTV, rather than waiting to see it on NBC... :P

I really hope this season gets the show out of the deep darkness that last season was mired in. Gangs, thugs, drugs, the hood, racism, abortion, beatings, murder - this is not what I watch FNL for.

If I had to guess, I'd say that this season will start out wrapping up those elements in the first 6-7 episodes. Then I think the bottom 6-7 episodes will focus almost entirely on Coach, the players and the final games.

In addition to the people in the promo photo in Post #1, there is a new cast member this season:

Grey Damon, who plays East Dillon's new Wide Receiver.

I'm surprised they didn't make Landry a 6th year senior.

Outside of the Taylors there is no one from season 1 in that promo shot. That's despressing. Sucks that Landry is gone too.

I caught up with S4 the past few days thanks to Netflix Instant Streaming. Pretty meh about the last Season. I'll watch it...but they just went a bit nutty with the final 7 or so episodes.

Billy for reading a quote from Ronnie Lott handwritten on a piece of paper.
Wasn't expecting to see Tim in the premiere since he's locked up.
Really like how the show updates the opening credits every season. Weird that only Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton and Aimee Teegarden are the last original cast members left.

Re: Friday Night Lights -- Season Premiere -- "Expectations" -- 10/27/10
Wow.. I thought last season was different... this season: it's like an entirely
different show.
I'm not so 'attached' to the new crowd.
I don't really care what happens to Jesse and her brothers or the fact that she seems to now be their guardian???
(was that woman in the BBQ her mother?)
I also don't care what happens to Becky. Although I do wonder how long it's going to take until she and Billy wind up getting themselves into some stupid, misunderstood situation.
Funny how at the teachers meeting, it was implied that East Dillon has been open for years ... didn't it just reopen last year?
The main thing that keeps this show together is Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler and as long as they're front and center I'll keep tuning in.
Highlights from last night:
Tim Riggins.
Sigh
He breaks my heart.
Tim Riggins will be out of prison in 3 months. Then what? Felon. No college. No future??
Please give him something meaningful and please don't hook him up w/ whiny immature Becky.
Dad and Julie.
Playing ping pong.
Landry and Matt's Grandma.
She's a gem.
Tami and Eric.
Watching their daughter drive off to college... while their youngest is still in diapers.
Not so great moment:
Landry at the Strip Club.
Why?
I think it was so out of character for Julie to bring him there.
Bizarre.

No, East Dillon was always there. What happened last year was that the district lines got redrawn so that some students from West Dillon had to transfer to East.

IIRC, Taylor Kitsch was shooting a movie when season 5 went into production, I believe he will return again later in the season....probably when he gets released. It is sad what happened to Tim, but he made the sacrifice to keep Billy with his family.

I think that's right. The "thugy-ness" of the existing students before the re-districting essentially made it impossible to field a real team any more. When Taylor stepped in, he found that there were still guys who wanted to play, but there was no longer a program available for them.
