American Idol Top 4, May 11/12 - Songs from Cinema / Jamie Foxx
We’re down to the final 4, only two weeks left after this week. This week the mentor will be Jamie Foxx and the theme is songs of the cinema which is a pretty broad category. Take a look at the song list, in spoilers due to the length:
Spoiler:
The format this week will be that each will sing one song, then each will sing a duet with one of the other finalists.
Tuesday: 7pm to 8pm CST, followed by a new episode of Glee
Wednesday: 8pm to 9pm CST.
Viewership on American Idol has fallen 17% and for the first time they have a survey. I encourage you to take it; you can praise or slam any of the judges (except for Simon), the guest judges, the mentors, the judges’ save,. You can rate the format of the show, etc etc.

Odd, nowhere in the survey is there a place to note that THE RESULTS SHOW IS TOO FUCKING LONG.

Looks like Elton John is now a finalist to replace Simon Cowell. The replacement won't be named until after the finale which could be minutes, days, or months.
And the duet rumor is true though I don't know what the pairings are.

Casey was the best tonight IMO. Lee was awful during that duet, but they loved it. I like Crystal, but that was probably her worst performance.

Lee DeWyze - sounded squeaky tonight at the start, so-so rendition of a good song, so he was in a holding pattern with this performance.
Michael Lynche - didn't like the song, so his impassioned choir performance left me flat.
Lee and Crystal - Not a bad build-up to the chorus, but they struggled a little bit from the start, but finished strong.
Casey James - Lord, that was weak.
Crystal Bowersox - thankfully Crystal was here to wake up the audience, at least she attempt to "make it her own", and she swung for the fence, and ended up with a stand-up triple.
Casey and Michael - I was struck by how much they resembled Val Kilmer and Michael Duncan Clarke. Overall, not all that impressed by their duet, it just lacked chemistry or harmony.

Total disagreement with ya all accounts.I hated Casey's version of Mrs Robinson although his duet with Mike wasn't too bad afterall.

Jason Castro did the ukelele much bettr than Casey James.
Crystal Bowersox did all right, except for the introduction - way too weak. "I'm all right" is a statement, meant to be sung forcefully, not meekly.
The two I liked were Lee Dewyze and Michael Lynche, though I still think Lynche will be going home this week.

Doesn't matter though, I think a Crystal-Lee final is pretty much a given at this point.
FWIW, I think Casey and DiDi will end up with the best careers of this season.

Not that it matters, but I was referring to her solo performance. She was fine during the duet, considering her partner.

Is it just me or does anyone else find Jamie Foxx one of the douchiest of all douchebags? And utterly bereft of even the teeniest tiniest bit of musical talent? Much like the final four contestants?
This season has been a complete suckfest and I couldn't give a crap who wins this one.

Foxx is a good performer and helps the contestants, well, perform. I think the problems with him this week were from the editing room. As I remember, he did a really good job a year or two ago when he was on.
Anyway, the one issue I had with the duets was that they were songs for one performer that they made into a duet. I would have loved to have seen a true duet, maybe Kenny Loggins' "Whenever I Call You (Friend)", by Crystal and Lee. Oh well.

I just listened to the "Studio Version" of "Falling Slowly" over on you.tube and frankly it fixes what I thought were some of the rough spots in the duet, and the song is much more cohesive and "listenable". Also, the "Studio Version" of Crystal's "I'm Alright" has much more gusto and just seems a bit "cooler" than her "Live" performance of the song.

The singing was weak. Lee was doing karaoke. Casey was putting me to sleep. Mike who isn't great to begin with was phoning it in. Crystal did not outdo Loggin's song despite what Kara and Ellen thought. However, Crystal and Lee did sound good as a duet. Mike and Casey's duet was forgettable.
Thank God for the FF button on my TiVo remote. Put it to good use with the results show. Performances from the musical guests were all weak and who needed to hear Ryan repeat the judge's comments from the night before either?

Just let this season be over. I actually fell asleep during BM's performance. He's right - he shouldn't have been there.

Crystal totally outdid Kenny Loggins. It's not like it's a hard task, it's Kenny Loggins.

Thanks for the link to that survey. I gave my two cents, and am now officially scared that we may get even more "backstory" on the contestants next year. Based on some of those questions, it's as if they just don't understand that it's about the quality of the vocals and not the sob stories and banter.
I was excited to hear Crystal and Lee sing "Falling Slowly." I love that movie, that song and the Swell Season. However, forcing it into a true duet hurt the melody of the song. It was good, but not as good as I was expecting it to be.
Glad to see Mike leave.
Still can't stand it when Casey sings vibrato, as he sounds like a goat.
Lee sounded pretty bad, and I normally like him.
Crystal was good, but not as good as we've seen from her at the beginning of the season.
Song choices were absurd.
Is this season over, yet?

In fact, the likelihood that she is going to win this thing (for reasons that completely boggle my mind) has already guaranteed that I won't be attending the tour concert this year (I've gone to four of them in past years). The winner always gets a disproportionate amount of stage time in the concert, and listening to Crystal for that much time just doesn't make me want to be there. At all.
Ummm... no. Not even close. I have the Kenny Loggins version, but would never buy hers.
