Yeah, what is the problem with the writers trying something a bit different?
Buffy had one of the best Musical episodes ever and though it may not be everyone's cup of tea, why give up on a show for that reason??

Surprised they let them show Walter smoking weed on TV.

Surprised no one has mentioned P.I. Olivia's 'broken heart' and them showing a picture of Mark Valley.

They didn't. They showed the bong, you heard the sound & you saw Walter exhaling, but they never showed the actual act.

Yup.

And for the record, I thought it was a great episode.

I normally like the musical stuff up Joss's alley, but this episode sucked. It didn't accomplish anything, the kid was annoying as hell, and the kid "ending" was also stupid. Calling it a musical is a freakin' joke; a toked up Walter singing horribly and Torv's equally cringe-worthy performance...the only decent singer is Abaddon, and that was way, way too short.

Two weeks ago with one of if not THE best Fringe episode EVER in White Tulip and now we have this steaming pile, one of the worst.

Re: Fringe -- "Brown Betty" -- 04/29/10

I think it's great to see a show take chances and do something different, something completely out of what is normally expected from it. Successful or not, it's still nice to see a show willing to tell stories that aren't exactly in line with what you would expect.

Beyond that, you can look at it as a study of how Walter's mind works. Here he is stoned, telling a strange story to a little girl. A story that involves her mother being killed and singing corpses. You get to see his distrust of William Bell and Massive Dynamic. In the end you get to see his tortured soul. He steals childrens' dreams and replaces them with nightmares. This is how Walter sees himself for what he did to Peter and Olivia for that matter.

It's not the first time we've seen that Walter is tortured by what he did. But it's a clear picture of just how guilt-ridden he is. You even get Walter's ending where he is left alone and heartless, but the little girl's ending is one where Walter gets saved. He's saved by a child, in a sense being absolved by the same children he had tortured in the past.

This episode was not as good as the last 5, but it was nowhere near a steaming pile. It did what great Sci-Fi should do. It took chances and made you think outside the box.

Well, kids DO believe in stories that only have happy endings, so her end to the story made sense.

I completely agree with you on all points. Eventhough it was just a story he was telling her, this might even be considered foreshadowing for future episodes or next season, with Peter being considered a danger now that he knows he's from the alternate universe. I really enjoyed this episode even if it didnt add that much to the current storyline... Cant believe there's only 3 episodes left already!

We didn't watch this episode until today, we didn't have high expectations, but at least me, I don't know the wife, was pleasantly surprised.

I can't wait for next week though.

It seems kind of rough because Anna Torv is getting a divorce from Mark Valley.

Is next week's title just a nice nod to "Twin Peaks" or is there more to it than that?

I think the final two episodes takes place 'over there', so it's possible by calling it Northwest Passage they are referring to Twin Peaks....as in Twin dimensions?

Momentum killing episode. I blame Glee.

I was hoping that the whole thing would be Walter working something out in his brain that would lead to a big reveal. But nope. Just an excuse to play dress up.

I don't know, I didn't think this episode was that bad. Sure it wasn't great, but film noir is always cool.

Re: Fringe -- "Brown Betty" -- 04/29/10

had no idea this was a gimmick episode when I started it tonight and i'm way bummed. I'll never understand why shows do this, particularly one in it's second season! there's so much ground to cover still, and they waste our time with this nonsense after a huge development the week before?

Lame.

We just had this episode here in the UK and I just wanted to mention the weird animated version of William Bell. It looked kinda cool.
Didn't know they were getting divorced.

Finally watched it and actually enjoyed. Wasn't really a musical though, don't know why they advertised it that way.

I have to agree. I thought songs were gonna come from everywhere!
I do love that Tears for Fears song.

Felt more like Dennis Potter to me than Joss Whedon
