Man this show is bullshit.
This season really shows us that there was absolutely no point to the Dharma Initiative. I hate how it was all about the science and time travel and now it's all religious.

He can end the game once and for all and likely send the MIB to where he belongs = hell. The island is likely the median between hell and the earth and the point of corruption has to be proven for access while the proof of humanity is the countermove. This is like one big game and these 6 candidates are the last six in the game. However, speaking of the replacement this means that they could conceivably just continue to replace the gatekeeper but what a bitch it is to actually get a replacement. One thing that bugs me is that we were never really given the importance of the Temple and the rest of the hippies. Were we just to assume that they were as important as Richard but just never know why? A little insight about them would be nice.

I 100% agree.
Step back from the mysteries a second and look at the writing device the writers used here. The show was about Richard's redemption, which only would come once he could forgive himself. He received that at the end, and then they used that moment of redemption to punctuate the truth that the MIB must be stopped...and then followed that with a scene between Jacob and the MIB reinforcing the point.
I don't believe the writers are trying to mislead us with this basic point this late in the final season. They used this special Richard-oriented episode to answer this question, plain and simple.

In any event, I'm glad Richard found redemption. Let's face it though, he sucked ass at his new job.

I don't know if it's mentioned yet in the thread or not, but if this episode is mostly true, wouldn't it go without saying that the flash-sideways are a world where MiB wasn't imprisoned since the island is underwater and unguarded?
Holy crap that was a horrific sentence but I'm exhausted and lazy.

Hey, you could be totally right--while I think it's pretty straight forward, nothing would surprise me with this show.
LOL QFT!
This makes sense, but what about the flash-sideways have really proven to be evil unleashed? If anything, some of them seem just the opposite (Jack and his son) or just the same mix of good and evil as regular life.

It also might lend some credence to the fact that maybe MiB is telling some version of the truth that the island doesn't mean anything in reality.

I'm not buying the Purgatory theory. If they were in Purgatory, how the hell were people able to leave the island? Once you're in Purgatory, one cant just get up and leave.

Anyone else really dig the giacchino music cue during the first flashback to the 1800's ricardos? really set the tone for the episode. The spanish conversations were . like a perpetual fast-taking, bush-ejected richard.

I find it funny that every time the use Spanish in Lost they go for the Mexican accent instead of the native accent. Richard's wife sounded completely Mexican (Richard sounded more Cuban). The same for the priest. All of them should have had a Spanish from Spain accent, where the Z is emphasized more.
The same happened when Locke when to get Sayid in the Dominican Republic and all the extras had Mexican accents. In Hollywood, all Spanish speaking people are Mexicans.

I honestly think the writers realized in Season 3 that they were creating a whole lot of trouble for themselves that they could never explain away, so they started heading in a direction.
By season 5, they finally found it, but realized the only way to explain every crazy thing they wrote away was to wrap it in the cover of this Jacob and MIB story. That's why it has taken precedence and everything else has taken a backseat.
I think they'll try to explain away more of the scientific side of the island with Whitmore's arrival, but all-in-all, I'm sure most of those questions will be left unanswered.

One has to wonder if the stakes are so high as to keep "evil" bottled up, why bother with bringing people to the "cork". Especially since people's free will seems to be the only way that Jacob could be killed thus allowing evil to escape. What does Jacob have to gain by bringing people to the island?

I think science and time travel have always been way behind the overall them of fate/destiny/good vs. evil.
Seems pretty clear that this mystical/magical island was discovered and then the science hippies came and tried to exploit it.
