Spartacus: Blood and Sand -- "Sacramentum Gladiatorum" -- 01/29/10

Spartacus

Synopsis:

Spoiler:
Enslaved Spartacus is entered into a gladiator school. While there, he makes an enemy of the powerful and ruthless Crixus and gets whipped into fighting shape by the whip-wielding taskmaster Doctore. And Spartacus' new owner, the crafty Batiatus, makes him an offer he finds difficult to refuse.

Ratings were really good last week which included the premiere and re-airs.

And if you weren't paying attention, this show was already renewed for a 2nd season back in December before episode 1 even aired.

Episode 2 has already been posted on Netflix. I will try to catch it sometime tomorrow afternoon.

I have to watch a few more episodes to make a conclusive opinion of the series, but let's hope Starz and the producers don't drag this out to tedium.

The constant slo-mo, pausing and close up & zooming of blood during every attack quickly became tedious. I will watch a couple of more episodes, but if this is the direction they continue I will quickly be out.

Outside of the flashbacks that opened the episode, I thought this was a lot more restrained with that annoying style (the overdone 300 thing). And for those of you who stopped watching after the premiere ... we got Lucy Lawless's first nude sex scene!

Yes, I was quite thankful for that.

I enjoyed this episode more than the pilot. I'll be sticking around...

I like how he can go and kill 4 gladiators at once last week, than get ass kicked by everyone the next.

I was pretty meh on this after pilot and this ep did nothing to change that

The episode had an explanation for that.

How believable it was is a different matter.

No big deal - the scene has been all over the Interweb for weeks.

Yeah, it was pretty lame when, the first week he gets tossed into the arena wearing a big diaper and goes Wolverine on four armed, armored, trained gladiators and kills them all in about fifteen seconds.

And then this week, he gets his ass handed to him by a Frenchman with a wooden sword.

I know that they said the gladiators he killed were shitty gladiators, but give me a fucking break!

I thought this episode was better than the first. Less fake blood and slo-mo action. Naked Xena was pretty good. Naked men, no so good.

I just saw the pilot. It was one of the worst things I've ever seen. Horrible acting. Boring story. Horrible production values. Don't think I'll bother with another episode.

Re: Spartacus: Blood and Sand -- "Sacramentum Gladiatorum" -- 01/29/10

I think some of you are viewing Spartacus from the wrong perspective. If your comparing this to Rome, Troy or any serious period drama, then obviously your going to be horrendously disappointed.

I think the look and intent of this show is a small screeen version of a Graphic Novel like a Sin City or 300. I have some appreciation of the genre and that's why the show works for me.

I kind of past on this show because of all the negative comments. Then I remembered you all are a bunch of haters. So I watched the first two episodes. This show is freaking great. The blood is a little over the top but I understand the style they are are going for.

Basically this is all about sex, violence, muscles, and women with their hands in Lucy Lawless's vagina. I like all these things. I could do without the penis shots but the women need something to look at.

Re: Spartacus: Blood and Sand -- "Sacramentum Gladiatorum" -- 01/29/10

Does Lucy Lawless' character have some sort of disease that necessitates here wearing a wig, or does she just not like her natural hair color?

I don't think this show horrific, but it is far from perfect. I realize it is meant to be viewed as something in the vain of 300 stylistically, and in that regard it does well. However, I really don't like the fact that so many historically based series (even on the History Channel) feel the need take this approach if they want people to watch. It's like instead of working against ADD in modern viewers, they are catering to it.
