Re: 30 Rock -- "Audition Day" -- 11/05/09

This episode had an amazing start ("And if nothing goes wrong in the next 8 hours..." *Liz briefly glances at the camera**) and never stopped.

Brian Williams had me and the wife howling. I loved the auditions, the digs on NBC, Kenneth and the horse mayor and another Jenna/Tracy outing.

Oh, and Josh coming back to audition again was the saddest/funniest thing I've seen in awhile.

I love how he was in gay porn but it was a "websisode"...

Re: 30 Rock -- "Audition Day" -- 11/05/09

i am not sure if i like a running theme to this show. they had the Liz baby thing, but i don't think that lasted too long. this show is so good with new story each week, i'm not certain i love the continuation of a new cast member.

i still love the shows, but it has seemed so themeless that i wished that would continue. perhaps all sitcoms need to evolve somewhat to continue.

Laughed, but the self-referential ads are really annoying. That joke doesn't work as a running gag. As a one off it was a little clever. When it happens every week, it feels very whorish.

Frankly, I'd rather they acknowledge the ads and have some fun with it then pretend anyone actually needs to have a Cisco-powered video conference. I've seen that damn thing show up in too many movies and TV shows, and the "Sure Mute" technology had me rolling.

Wastn't that the second time they had Brian on? Wasn't there something about his dressing room or something like that?

Wow. Not only did I think this was a fantastic episode and best of the season so far, but probably the best of the series so far. Pearls before swine, I suppose.

Yes, that was the episode where Jack was a page for a day. I hope we see him again, but I'd really like to find a way to get Lorne Michaels on there as himself, personally.

Loving this season and it's all working for me. I laugh and have a great time every episode with all the rapid fire jokes. Jack consoling Lemon with the broom across her back last episode still makes me laugh every time I think about it.

I'm there with you. It's still a great show but something feels off. It just doesn't seem as sharp. I think the running storylines are great; I loved the Salma Hayek episodes.

^This is one of the reasons why I love this show. Plenty of smart humor like this mixed with plenty of classic humor as well.

The show is as good as ever. We're just used to it.

Glad to see that I'm not alone in feeling like 30 Rock just hasn't been clicking as much lately. As you say, I still like the show, I'm not planning on dropping it or anything, but there's just something that doesn't feel quite right this season. I think some of you might have hit it with the criticisms of the running NBC ads. I think the show might becoming too self-aware. Sprinkle that in a little bit and it's clever. Use it too much and it becomes a bit tiresome and predictable.

I'm sorry, but when you spend 25 seconds "acknowledging" the ad, it becomes less about having fun with it, and it simply becomes a commercial.
