Re: Friday Night Lights -- Season 4 Premiere -- "East of Dillon" -- 10/28/09 (Directv

Great episode, glad its back on

As far as JD goes, yall are crazy. Kid was a douche all of last year under the surface and it finally broke through in the last couple of episodes and specifically the last game. Now the kid has had an entire year to grow and see his dad take over the football team basically and he feels hes gained some power. Ive seen people like this in high school, so its no stretch. And the guy is the QB of the towns biggest football, no ones going to put him in his place.

I agree there should be at least a holiday episode where Tyra, Lyla, Smash and Street visit and the viewers get updated on their post high school lives. Tyra could visit and hang out with Julie. Smash and Street could visit Eric and tell him about their lives.

I thought it was hysterical when Tim threw in the towel at San Antonio State and tossed all his books and bag out of the car. Billy had every right to be pissed off at Tim coming back and freeloading off him. With Lyla being out of the picture, you knew Tim would not be able to stay focused, especially since he barely graduated in the 1st place.

It looked to me that East Dillon was wearing practice jersey's in the 1st game. Not surprising considering their program has no money. The new volunteer assistant coach was hilarious. I was surprised that their game was actually broadcasted.

Writer106, I have to disagree with you about the ending being bad. I thought it was appropriate. Eric had no choice but throw in the towel. Most of his roster had severe injuries and his #1 running back had a high ankle sprain, there was simply no way they could have continued, let alone embarrass themselves any further.

Also, JD was still a cry baby douche bag because he's still pissed off about Eric benching him in favor of Matt during the playoff game they lost last season. I heard that JD's attitude gets worse as the season progresses.

Vince Howard (Michael Jordan) is no smash, but I think he's a good addition and I think he and Eric's interactions will make good TV.

Connie Britton is still one really sexy TV Mom. She and Kyle Chandler have amazing chemistry.

How long before Tim bangs the girl who sang the national anthem?

The Opening credits sequence is a dying art, but I'm glad that Friday Night Lights continues to do it. It was cool to see it revised with the East Dillon settings and new cast members.
I didn't think the ending was bad. I agree Eric had no choice but to forfeit. The reason I hated it is because it was hard to see a coach like Eric deal with starting over with a new team in a part of town that is economically depressed. Like you said the uniforms look like practice uniforms and people in East Dillon aren't huge supporters of the school and the football program. I sort of felt bad for him because he is trying to make the best out of his situation. But so far it's not working for him. I agree with you JD was a douche last season too. I also like the character of Vince. He seems to really look up to Eric and they will probably develop a good player/coach relationship over the season.

I liked how they tied the notion of the Hero's Journey in Riggins' lit class into this season where Coach has been stripped of all the trappings of success, and has to rebuild his football program on sheer will and determination, with obstacles and hard choices along the way for the team he leads.

I must have been watching a different show than you last season because I remember a kid that was shy (particularly around girls) and was scared (for good reason) of his dick father. He rarely acted like a douche last season.

I saw douches in high school too but they were invariably douches all along.

Damn, it pained me to see Coach have to forfeit that game. That hurt. I know the team will struggle all year, and it's going to be very interesting (and hard to take) watching Coach deal with it.

Loved to see Mrs. Coach stick it to the new "regime". F those guys.

I could totally see JD's new attitude, knowing that he's now QB1 and his dad and his coach are running the show.

Damn, Grandma is getting worse.

Seems like they are setting up Buddy to defect soon. He can probably bring in some money.

Yep. It's pretty obvious that they are going to make everyone affiliated with the East side the good guys and everyone on the West side (save Principal Taylor) the evil guys.

After reading this thread, I can see how Matt will get written out of the show.
My guess, even though I have to wait until next summer to see it.
Spoiler:
His Grandma will be getting worse, and eventually pass away. He will resent staying in Dillion, break up with Julie, and leave for school in Chicago.

God, that's tragic.

I disagree with your prediction because if you look at how they've wrapped up other characters' storylines, they're usually a lot more feel-good and hopeful than that.

Well that's not entirely true.

Not anywhere near what I was referring to. I'm talking a 'real' death.

Absolutely great episode! The look on Mrs. Coach's face as she watched her husband forfeit and then walk off the field to the boos was just heart-wrenching.

Like others have already posted, I hope they don't make the show so 1-sided with West Dillon being the bad guys and East Dillon being the scrappy good guys. The show has better writing than that.

Is it just me or does anybody else like the new Vince kid just because he's Wallace from the Wire? Not because he played Wallace but because he was Wallace? hahahaha...

Now somehow my DirecTiVo missed this and they didn't repeat it AT ALL that I could tell. Tomorrow's episode is on like 100 times!

Verified that it is.

I also make sure certain shows are recorded on a 2nd DVR as backup.

I have SD DirecTiVo so there is no on demand available. Makes no damn sense that this week's is being repeated exhaustively this week while the premier only aired on that one night.

Not true, the premiere repeated last Friday as well. The promo'd it afterwards. Double check your season pass and be sure it's recording it. I noticed that season passes for the 101 are kind of wacky and I constantly have to double check it.
