Not everyone who graduates HS 'moves on'. It makes sense for some to stay behind, and Riggins being the one who is not all that book-smart is the perfect bet.

Hell - look at his brother for Pete's sake. He's still kicking around Dillon!

And really, for this show's setting--small town Texas--I'm surprised they haven't had more of the cast stick around. Truth is, a LOT of high school students in small town Texas never leave. (I'm in Texas. ) But it does help keep the show's high school setting by moving them on.

They should have Thanksgiving and Xmas episodes where everybody comes home for the holidays to party, like a true small town.

I'm speechless.
There were some WTH moments.. but all in all .. this is still the best show
on Tv.
That ending was so unexpected... but so necessary, I think?

Grandma seems to be worsening.. I have a sinking feeling that Matt is going to be freed up to go to Chicago like planned. I don't see them ending his storyline any other way... unless they bring back his AWOL father.

The new assistant coach cracks me up. I LOL'ed when Coach Taylor shot him a look for repeating the "land of the free" part of the national anthem.

His new running back looks a lot like the kid who played Wallace in the Wire. I'm thinking it has to be the same guy.

I liked the new episode. The assistant coach was funny during the national anthem. I hated the ending of the episode. There will be a lot of conflict this season. I think with Matt's storyline he will probably ending up hating staying in Dillon and getting Grandma Lorraine out of the nursing home.

Fantastic ep and looked great in HD. Huge sigh of relief that it's closed captioned this season (it wasn't last year so I was forced to watch on NBC).

Saw it coming from a mile away, but still got chills when Landry said "can't lose" during pre-game.

Liking the new cast so far. And the girl that sang the national anthem?

I enjoyed it, but it's pretty lame how they took all the sympathetic characters and put them in East Dillon and turned that QB kid into an asshole, which he clearly wasn't last season (him and his dad may as well have been twirling their mustache), just so the old school would be the clear villains of the piece and East Dillon the underdogs. Too cheap, easy and black & white for my tastes.

I was thinking the exact same thing as I watched. It's just way too convenient and, frankly, this show is usually better than shit like this.

Yep, he is, I just checked:

Excellent episode, I love this show so much.

Breaking Bad, Big Love, Mad Men, and this are my current holy quadrinity of TV.

Re: Friday Night Lights -- Season 4 Premiere -- "East of Dillon" -- 10/28/09 (Directv

Excellent season premiere. It's tough to see Coach Taylor have to go through a rebuilding year, but I think they did a good job bringing him in a fresh new setting with new characters.

I thought it was hysterical when Tim threw in the towel at San Antonio State and tossed all his books and bag out of the car. Billy had every right to be pissed off at Tim coming back and freeloading off him. With Lyla being out of the picture, you knew Tim would not be able to stay focused, especially since he barely graduated in the 1st place.

It looked to me that East Dillon was wearing practice jersey's in the 1st game. Not surprising considering their program has no money. The new volunteer assistant coach was hilarious. I was surprised that their game was actually broadcasted.

Writer106, I have to disagree with you about the ending being bad. I thought it was appropriate. Eric had no choice but throw in the towel. Most of his roster had severe injuries and his #1 running back had a high ankle sprain, there was simply no way they could have continued, let alone embarrass themselves any further.

Also, JD was still a cry baby douche bag because he's still pissed off about Eric benching him in favor of Matt during the playoff game they lost last season. I heard that JD's attitude gets worse as the season progresses.

Vince Howard (Michael Jordan) is no smash, but I think he's a good addition and I think he and Eric's interactions will make good TV.

Connie Britton is still one really sexy TV Mom. She and Kyle Chandler have amazing chemistry.

How long before Tim bangs the girl who sang the national anthem?

The Opening credits sequence is a dying art, but I'm glad that Friday Night Lights continues to do it. It was cool to see it revised with the East Dillon settings and new cast members.

Just checked the tentative airing schedule for FNL. Right now it's slated to run 8 episodes in a row before they take the Holidays off. Then it will return January 13th for episode 9 and finish up on February 10th.

One nitpick I have is the seniors moving to another school.
We have had a lot of new HS built here in Charlotte, and we've had a few redistrictings ... the Seniors are always allowed to finish where they started.
When a new HS opens, there are no Seniors the first year. When they redistrict, the Seniors are allowed to stay in their own schools.

One other thought:

Don't what it is about that T101 channel and my DVR, but it always fucks up recording FNL. Did it last year. Did it last night. If I don't have it already tuned to 101, it won't record it properly. Fortunately, I caught the problem 10 minutes in and watched it live from there (and then the first 10 minutes on the midnight reair).

I thought the same exact thing. If they make JD a complete villian this season, I think that's pretty lame.

She is pretty cute. She is a local girl just graduated from Round Rock in 2009.

Here is a short article.

Also agree with all those rolling their eyes at JD and his dad being so over-the-top. They like to call this a small town, and maybe it's completely different in Texas, but in any small midwest town JD would have the shit kicked out of him in about 2 seconds if he acted that way, no matter how much money and influence his old man had.

That was my only real gripe about the episode.

Re: Friday Night Lights -- Season 4 Premiere -- "East of Dillon" -- 10/28/09 (Directv

The thing with JD is even though he wasn't a villain through most of last season, the pressure to please his father and his ego got the best of him in that playoff game last season. Also, I think he was always jealous of Matt and has been pissed at him and Coach Taylor after being pulled from that game. Being promoted to QB 1 would be a huge ego booster and getting yanked in a huge playoff game was only going to demoralize him and I think definitely change his attittude.

Now with Taylor and Matt being gone, I'm not surprised that he's become a dick and thinks he's now "The Man" at West Dillon.

Nice catch--didn't realize it w/the different hair but I knew I knew him from somewhere.

Good start. Nice job making the new field look like a total dump. Nice back/forth between the two games too. I'm just not that concerned about certain characters leaving and new ones joining--the show's good enough to do that, I think.

I agree. The kid goes from no social skills and being afraid of his dad will do to him about every little thing, to getting hammered at parties and a skirt chaser. His dad still seams like the same asshole and who wwould kick the shit out of him if he knew what he was doing.
