The Vampire Diaries picked up for a full season; Melrose gets 5 more

No surprises, but CW has given The Vampire Diaries a full season order picking up an additional nine episodes for a total of twenty-two. Melrose Place also got additional episodes ordered; five for a total of at least 18.

The Vampire Diaries has been CW’s best performing show, Melrose Place its worst (but it’s Dawn’s baby!) and as has been often stated around here on a very similar trajectory to last year’s Privileged .

No surprise there on Vampire, that's their biggest hit in ages.

Melrose is going to die an ugly death.

Vampre Diaries, no surprise. It's probably the best new serialized show this fall. IMO, better than FlashForward.

As for Melrose, I'm glad they are sticking with it, even for a shorter season like Privileged last season. They invested alot of money on it, so not surprised they don't want to dump it even though the ratings have been disappointing.

That's not saying much, but yeah I also agree that it is the best new show thus far.

CW may still order the last 4. It all depends on a few factors (mainly Locklear). The order gives faith to current viewers to stick around and CW hopes Locklear will boost ratings a bit. Probably a 50/50 shot on the last 4 episodes being ordered. Keep in mind they have several 4-6 episode "reality" shows they want to air as well (and may if LuX crash and burns). It also depends on if CW will keep OTH, Supernatural, Smallville next year. If too many go, they won't cancel Melrose Place. One of those will likely be toast.

Well, I read that Heather Locklear committed to at least 7 episodes and her 1st episode isn't until November 17th, which is episode 9. So, depending on how they spread out her appearances, The CW probably had to give them more episodes (because it would go past the initial 13) to fulfill their contract obligation to her and of course hoping the ratings grow.

Plus, I read they are reportedly paying Heather $50K a week

I'd love to confirm that for you but can't right now. Locklear will be on for some time though. Syd's murder will be solved as well (they have not shot that far yet).

I believe it was Ausiello who reported in his Ask Ausiello column several weeks ago that said she will be in at least 7 episodes. The November 17th airdate for her is confirmed. There is stories all over the net.

Some blog, which I can't locate right now, reported her salary.

Well isn't Supernatural definitely ending? I read somewhere that if the CW tries to extend it, it would have to be without Ackles, Padalecki and Kripke. That would essentially end up being a whole new show IMHO.

I have been recording Melrose Place but found two episodes had bad reception. After skipping it for four weeks, I find no reason to try to catch up. I just didn't care about any of the storylines.

Good news about Vampire Diaries. I was tiring of that show as well, but the last episode finally roped me in.

Ackles and Padalecki have contracts until the end of Season 6. Kripke does not, but has a plan if the show gets renewed. He has no choice if he is under contract and CW wants it. At this point, they likely will renew it as ratings have improved and its a perfect fit with VD. I'd bet Smallville is toast. Even though DVD/BD sales are high, the show is expensive to product. OTH gets good ratings and is much cheaper (especially with Burton/Murray out of the picture).

Kripke created the show, but he doesn't own it. So they can easily hire a new showrunner like they did with Gilmore Girls, should he not return for season 6.

Personally, I'm ready for Supernatural to end. Let it go out on a high note and wrap it.

I've been finding Vampire Diaries kind of ho hum but am definitely addicted to Melrose Place. It's a guilty pleasure but I've been enjoying the hell out of it.

Glad to see Vampire Diaries is doing well. It is getting better with each episode.

I also see it has been picked up by other stations. I can watch it twice on Thursdays. If I miss it on that day I can catch it on Friday, Saturday or Sunday....

Yeah, Privileged had 18 episodes. So MP definitely could have its days numbered. MP is a guilty pleasure for me, too.

Good news about TVD.

Melrose has picked up steam since the beginning and fortunately they are moving away from the stupid murder mystery.

I am only sticking with Melrose for now because Locklear is going to show up. (I even watched all the episodes of LAX.)

I dropped Vampire Diaries after 2 episodes.

It's a shame, but it's understandable. Not everyone in this forum fits the target audience of this show or let alone likes this genre.

I think Jadzia mentioned she doesn't have the patience to watch another teen-themed drama.

I think the show is awesome and love the dark tone.

The show gets better and better each week so if she quit because of that reason it's a shame.

Re: The Vampire Diaries picked up for a full season; Melrose gets 5 more

I just wasn't feeling any of the characters or even the tone of the show. I have been trying this season to minimize the number of shows I have been watching, because I found myself watching too many shows that ultimately I did not really enjoy or care about. I finally pulled the plug on Smallville and Cold Case this season and my DVR already feels lighter. I have a newborn baby so I am trying to make sure I am only watching shows I am truly entertained by. Too many shows were on my DVR that were becoming a chore to get through.
