Re: Community -- "Spanish 101" -- 9/24/09

I've really liked this show so far. I know humor is subjective, but I had a few laugh-out-loud moments in both episodes. I've seen some complaints about it being a "cookie cutter sitcom" or containing stereotypical characters, but it seems fairly obvious that the show is having fun playing with sitcom standards. The fact that there's a character obsessed with entertainment media indicates the show is well aware of sitcom conventions. I'm expecting the show to be more of a parody.

Am I the only one who does not find that Asian comedian funny?

He was in Hangover, he plays the Spanish teacher on this show, and he is in a couple of other new movies.

I just don't think his style is entertaining.

I love ken jeong, so it's just you OK episode. This show is amusing but not FUNNY. I'll stick with it since I like the cast, but it has yet to be GREAT.

Re: Community -- "Spanish 101" -- 9/24/09

I recorded it but stopped watching about halfway through. I may pick it back up tonight. Someone in the pilot thread mentioned Jeff acting like a grown Zack Morris, I agree with that and can't get past it. It's really sad that he's going through all of this to get with Britta who wants nothing to do with him.

+1 for the amusing but not funny comment. She really does kinda remind me a young Elisabeth Shue though.

I didn't think the ep was that great although I laughed at the last few minutes with the skit and Spanish rap. I'll probably watch a few more episodes before I decide to keep watching or drop it.

Re: Community -- "Spanish 101" -- 9/24/09

I tried but this show is just lame.

Then again I can't stand 99% of sit-coms on now anyway. Tried it because I love McHale on The Soup and it's on after The Office - the only network comedy I do watch.

Chase is OK. Watching McHale makes me sad because he's so much funnier than this show allows him to be. The rest - blah. And Abed - double blah. Just lame characters.

Re: Community -- "Spanish 101" -- 9/24/09

Thought the 2nd episode was okay.

There were a few parts that got me chuckling. But other than that, the show is very dry in it's humor and as I said last week, McHale's character Jeff is just a good bullshitter. I thought Ken Jeong's rant at the beginning of Spanish class had some funny bits to it.

I wonder how long they are going to play out Britta being a tease to Jeff.

The premise of the show seems a little thin to me.

another great ep. for me. love the route the show seems to be taking: funny with some heart. McHale just nails his character and just really liked it throughout.

Thought it was a funny episode and the show does walk the clever/obnoxious line very finely. Pinata of a beaten Guatemalan journalist and the "Tardiness? That's offensive to Abed" bits were great.

Re: Community -- "Spanish 101" -- 9/24/09

I thought this episode was on par with the pilot, but I'm still a bit iffy on this one. I don't know what it is ... it just seems like something is off in parts. Maybe the comedy is just too broad at times. Or maybe I still just don't like some of the characters. Overall, I like it enough to stick with it, though. I'm already recording the other NBC comedies anyway, so might as well.

"sausagefest"

I loved it, but I also loved the premiere as well. The supporting cast definitely goes a long way in this show. I could barely stop laughing at the expressions on everyone's faces during the montage.

The wife and I love this show, which means it will probably end up getting cancelled.

We watch this, The Office and 30 Rock (can't wait for the season to start).

Haven't seen Parks And Recreation, but only because Amy Poehler is the only person on the planet that makes me want to . I seriously cannot stand her, she, along with Wanda Sykes make me want to drive my car off a cliff (even when I'm sitting in the comfort of my own home). It's just one of those things.

I agree that it is going for that, but a show also has to have likable characters. I don't think I'll end up liking many, or any, of these actors/roles.

Those were pretty funny.

Decided to give it another week or two, as I have plenty of room on my DVR. See a slight potential to grow on me, as I like the writing, just hate the acting. It's not entirely horrible, but I'd rather re-watch 30 Rock or Arrested Development episodes than a series aiming for that kind of humor.

If I end up keeping it on my DVR it will probably be mainly to guarantee getting all of The Office and 30 Rock.

Hating Amy Poehler and loving this show,

oh boy I don't even know where to begin.

I'm not dismissing it yet because I like a lot of the cast but something feels really off about the show. I like the whole dry humor thing but I'm just not getting into this show as much as I hoped. This episode seemed no different than the pilot so I don't really understand everyone saying that this redeemed the show.

At this point I'll record it and watch it whenever I have nothing else to do.

You could probably begin by not misinterpreting what I said... I never said I "hated" Amy Poehler. Although I did state that I would rather smash my face into a wall than have to sit (or stand) through anything she does.

True, I do enjoy Community. It's doesn't seem too pretentious, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. It's humor isn't forced. I guess it's the subtle awkwardness that I appreciate.

On the other hand Amy Poehler's "look at me, look at me, I'm acting goofy so that makes me funny... everybody laugh" style of comedy never has, nor ever will do anything for me.

So, sadly, the correlation between me supposedly "hating" Amy Poehler but loving Community really doesn't make any sense. One, Poehler thinks she is funny and tries to be clever (not really), and the other, Community is just that.

Now, having not seen Parks & Recreation, eight years from now when it airs it's final episode, I'll just have to take everybody's word for it, that I really missed out on a gem of a show. Kinda like that whole 'Friends' series I thankfully avoided during it's entire run.

So far, it's a decent sitcom with some funny stuff and nothing really bad yet. Good start.

I like the show but I think Jeff needs to not seem like such an a-hole.
He needs to start being likable.

As it is now I can't blame Britta for calling him a douche and not being into him yet.

I thought the bit with Ken Jeong was hilarious, and "star burns" was Dino Stamatopoulos!

This is the first time I remember making a nearly complete 180 on a show, so I'm making this as a retraction/apology in the two threads where I slammed it.

The show has really grown on me. Loving the growth in the characters, and how is shows their budding friendships.
