I too did not like the documentary interview stuff. Funny enough to watch again, especially during the pellet gun scene. My favorite character was the father trying to be hip.

Judging by some of the comments in this thread it may live up to the hype from the commercials. Forgot to TiVo it so I'll have to find it online.

I did not want to watch it, but the wife did. It was much funnier than I anticipated. I loved the "hip" dad ["I know all the texting lingo - lol, laugh out loud; omg, oh my god, wtf, why the face"] and the pellet gun scene. I put it on season pass.

Laughed out loud several times. I'll keep with it.

The oldest daughter's boyfriend carrying the dad to the sofa after he was trying to be all tough was hilarious.

I think they are re-airing this and Cougar Town Friday night.

It was okay but that 'Lily' comment had me . The gay dudes are the funniest part. Plus it's got Sofia Vergara, and that never hurts.

Re: Modern Family -- New Series with Ed O'Neill -- Debuts 9/23/09

I'm glad I'm not the only one underwhelmed by this. There's definite potential there and the "Riry" joke was by far the best thing in the show.

I don't get the documentary style, they really need to explain that because I can't just accept it and it's a driving premise behind the show.

Phil, and this because painfully evident during his eyes/mouth speech, is what Michael Scott should be on The Office. Realistic, yet clueless. This character, on this show, seems like a blatant copy and it really hurts the show when I'm constantly thinking of much better another show would be with this character.

This show has the potential to be something better than its pilot. I hope it comes to find itself. Cougar Town blew this away, but I don't see how that show can sustain itself long term.

It was okay, but nothing got me to LOL. I wonder if it'll fill that Arrest Development-esque-dysfunctional family niche for me, but I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah, I'm finding that hard to get past too. It's such a cliche at this point, and you don't need to film a single-camera laugh track-less comedy this way.

Re: Modern Family -- New Series with Ed O'Neill -- Debuts 9/23/09

Is it cheaper to film it with a single camera doc-style?

Liked the two non conventional families. The "normal" family was cliched and the father trying to be hip was too Michael Scott for me. Ed O'Neill is great as the aging father but he looks like shit.

Better than average commercial TV comedy. I enjoyed it for the most part. But will we ever see a male gay character on television that isn't flaming stereotypical? Seriously.

Re: Modern Family -- New Series with Ed O'Neill -- Debuts 9/23/09

I thought it was pretty funny. I understand where they are going with the documentary style, as it is a good gimmick for incorporating character's "commentary", but my issue with it is that they filmed the show too "professionally" for the gimmick to work. Cutting in "interview" shots and the occasional camera glance into a show otherwise shot as any other Hollywood production just ends up as distracting.

Re: Modern Family -- New Series with Ed O'Neill -- Debuts 9/23/09

Thought this was like a more family-friendly version of shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation (i.e. too safe and watered down). Had some laughs though, but not sure if I'll watch it again.

Re: Modern Family -- New Series with Ed O'Neill -- Debuts 9/23/09

I loved this...was laughing throughout and I've always loved Julie Bowen, so I'm happy to see her on such a promising show. Very well done with lots of great lines. Easily the strongest new 30min comedy of the season (Community was just OK and Cougar Town was funny but wildly uneven).

"I gave her my heart, she gave me a photo of me as an old timey sheriff" (or something like that). LOL.
