Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)

ABC averaged 15.3 million viewers and a 9.8 rating/16 share in households for the night. CBS was a fairly solid second with just under 14 million viewers and an 8.5/14. FOX (7.3 million, 4.6/7) finished a distant third. NBC (5.3 million, 3.4/6) came in fourth, and The CW trailed with 3.2 million viewers and a 2.0/3.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, ABC's 5.8 ratings was more than two points better than that of second-place CBS (3.7). FOX took third in the demo with a 2.5, followed by NBC at 2.2 and The CW at 1.4.

Ouch for NBC.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)

What I don't get is how do people know that TBL is a bad show, i.e. not worth watching, if they've never watched it? If the first episode didn't draw viewers, maybe it's in a bad timeslot or not promoted well. I can certainly see that if a show's ratings drop over time, especially suddenly from one week to the next, it's an indication that people didn't like what they were seeing. But for people to never watch it seems to possibly indicate other issues.

And, not to single TBL out here, just that it's the latest example of a show starting off with bad ratings and being written off.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)

After viewing Thursday's ratings, I think that will pretty much be the norm for the rest of the season.

Not shocking that Fringe took a huge hit with the increased competition. I think more people DVR'd it than watched it live.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)

Well if ~1-2 million would come off of Grey's or CSI (possible), then it might see a jump back up. Given the sheer numbers watching both of those shows, I'm not sure Fox can view Fringe's numbers as "bad". After all, they knew what they were going up against. It's not like they were putting 24 up against those two.

Still puzzles me why they moved the show to face off against those 2 juggernauts of shows.

TV ratings: 'Medium'-sized numbers good enough for CBS Friday
By Rick Porter

September 26, 2009 8:55 AM

Fast National ratings for Friday, Sept. 25, 2009

CBS coasted to a ratings win Friday with its lineup of premieres, but the numbers for its returning shows were down a bit from last fall's debuts. NBC's "Law & Order" and FOX's "Brothers" and "Dollhouse" didn't do much either.

The Eye averaged 8.4 million viewers and a 5.4 rating/10 share in households for the night, finishing about 2.5 million viewers ahead of second-place NBC (5.9 million, 4.0/7). ABC took third with 5. million viewers and a 3.5/6. FOX (2.7 million, 1.7/3) finished fourth, and The CW (1.8 million, 1.2/2) brought up the rear.

CBS won the adults 18-49 demographic as well, albeit with a modest 2.0 rating. ABC grabbed second in the demo with a 1.7. NBC's 1.4 was good enough for third, followed by FOX, 1.0, and The CW, 0.8.

Friday's hour-by-hour results:

8 p.m.

CBS: "Ghost Whisperer" season premiere (8.6 million viewers, 5.4/10 households)
NBC: "Law & Order" season premiere (6.3 million, 4.2/8)
ABC: "FlashForward" rerun (4.5 million, 3.0/6)
FOX: "Brothers" series premiere - two episodes (2.8 million, 1.8/3)
The CW: "Smallville" season premiere (2.5 million, 1.5/3)

18-49 leader: "Ghost Whisperer" (2.2)

9 p.m.

CBS: "Medium" season premiere (8.8 million, 5.7/10)
NBC: "Dateline" (5.8 million, 4.1/7)
ABC: "Modern Family" rerun (4.3 million, 2.7/5)/"Cougar Town" rerun (4.2 million, 2.7/5)
FOX: "Dollhouse" season premiere (2.6 million, 1.6/3)
The CW: "America's Next Top Model" rerun (1.2 million, 0.9/2)

18-49 leader: "Medium" (2.0)

10 p.m.

CBS: "Numb3rs" season premiere (7.9 million, 5.2/10)
ABC: "20/20" (7.1 million, 4.9/9)
NBC: "The Jay Leno Show" (5.7 million, 3.8/7)

18-49 leader: "20/20" (2.3)

Ratings information includes live and same-day DVR viewing. All numbers are preliminary and subject to change.

Damn... that 2.6 for "Dollhouse" really disappoints me. Hopefully FOX will let Whedon finish out the 13 episode order.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)

Isn't 2.6M very low even by Smallville standards? Maybe if CW has to drop something else they'll move it to sometime earlier in the week - maybe Monday/Tuesday? I think Wednesday/Thursday would be suicide.

2.5M is low for Smallville, but the show is so established and already makes millions in DVD sales/International Sales and plus it's veteran show in it's 9th season. I don't think there is anything to worry about.

You have to factor in the move to Friday for some audience erosion for Smallville.

I wonder how long before Fringe gets moved to Friday? The Fox Friday slot is death, but going against Grey's and CSI isn't really better. Brothers is DOA and Til Death probably won't do much better... at least Fringe would be a good pairing with Dollhouse thematically.

TV ratings: 'Dancing,' 'House' top Monday; 'Trauma' and 'Lie to Me' soft
By Rick Porter

September 29, 2009 11:17 AM

Fast National ratings for Monday, Sept. 28, 2009

"Dancing with the Stars" and "House" remained strong Monday, allowing their respective networks to claim a share of the ratings win for the night. The season premiere of "Lie to Me" wasn't as healthy, however, and the debut of "Trauma" on NBC, while soft, at least built a little on its lead-in.

ABC led the night overall with 14.3 million viewers and a 9.4 rating/15 share in households. CBS (11.7 million, 7.4/11) beat out FOX (11.1 million, 6.6/10) for second place. NBC was pretty far back in fourth with 6.1 million viewers and a 3.9/6. The CW (2.5 million, 1.6/2) was in the back of the pack as usual.

Thanks to "House," FOX won the adults 18-49 demographic with a 4.3, edging CBS' 4.1. ABC scored a 3.2 to take third. NBC came in fourth with a 2.2, a point better than The CW's 1.2.

Monday night hour by hour:

8 p.m.

ABC: "Dancing with the Stars" (16.5 million viewers, 10.8/17 households)
FOX: "House" (14.4 million, 8.4/13)
CBS: "How I Met Your Mother" (8.7 million, 5.5/9)/"Accidentally on Purpose" (8.1 million, 5.1/8)
NBC: "Heroes" (5.8 million, 3.6/5)
The CW: "One Tree Hill" (2.6 million, 1.7/3)

18-49 leader: "House" (5.7)

9 p.m.

ABC: "Dancing with the Stars" (16.8 million, 11.0/16)
CBS: "Two and a Half Men" (13.6 million, 8.2/12)/"The Big Bang Theory" (13 million, 7.8/12)
FOX: "Lie to Me" season premiere (7.7 million, 4.8/7)
NBC: "Trauma" series premiere (6.9 million, 4.4/7)
The CW: "Gossip Girl" (2.3 million, 1.6/2)

18-49 leader: "The Big Bang Theory" (5.1)

10 p.m.

CBS: "CSI: Miami" (13.5 million, 8.8/15)
ABC: "Castle" (9.6 million, 6.4/11)
NBC: "The Jay Leno Show" (5.6 million, 3.7/6)

18-49 leader: "CSI: Miami" (4.1)

Ratings information includes live and same-day DVR viewing. All numbers are preliminary and subject to change.

Yikes... I heard that "Brothers and Sisters" and "Desperate Housewives" both fell almost 35% in the ratings from last year. I hope this doesn't spell the end of "Brothers and Sisters"
