Doctor Who Series 5 Discussion (BBC)

Please keep any spoilers in tags prior to posting or mention so before a link. The series won't kick off until next year so we do have some time.

-------
Yes, I know #10 isn't even finished airing yet, but product has now started on S5 and the first reports are coming in.

New picture of the Doctor and his companion - http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/s4/mi...t_and_karen_01

I really dug the original promo pictures (2-5) for Smith, but I'm not too keen on this new look (1). I hope it's more for a set piece than "the look".

I am encouraged by Moffat's comment though:

Quote:
And here it is, the big moment – the new Doctor, and his new best friend.

And here's me, with the job I wanted since I was seven. 40 years to here! If I could go back in time and tell that little boy that one day all this would happen, he'd scream, call for his mum, and I'd be talking to you now from a prison cell in 1969. So probably best not then.

Matt and Karen are going to be incredible, and Doctor Who is going to come alive on Saturday nights in a whole new way – and best of all, somewhere out there, a seven-year-old is going to see them, fall in love, and start making a 40-year plan...

I've seen him. He's like fire, and ice, and rage. Like the night, and the storm in the heart of the sun. He's ancient and forever. He burns at the center of time and sees the turn of the univrse.

I feel just the opposite. The Doctor is not an emo hipster.

I'm wondering: does this companion arrive pre or post-regeneration? Essentially, will the Smith era begin with a complete break from Tennant and have no character carry-over?

Maybe I'm just used to RTDs take on the Doctor and therefore that's what I'm expecting.

I liked how Tennant was playful and excited, yet dour and full of remorse and sadness at the same time. I'm having a very hard time figuring out how they'll take the new Doctor. His youth suggests they'd go for happy go lucky, but probably not since that's the easy answer.

I'd prefer just about anything over the emo look. In fact, the latest picture is the first one where I didn't instinctively want to punch him in the face, but I doubt they are going to keep him an a tweed suit and bow tie for long.

Seeing the picture of the new Doc and his (hottie) companion together made me think of something else too. With the reboot, the Doc has now rather regularly started hooking up with his companions. With Eccleston and even Tennant, there was always a bit of a May-December thing going on, which reflected the massive generational and cultural (and probably several other) gaps between them. These latest two actors look like they could be in college together.

WTF? While admittedly there has been flirtation between the Doctor and his companions, he has NOT been "hooking up" with them in the physical sense. What episodes have you been watching?

Technically just about ANY relationship involving the Doctor is going to be May-December since he is supposed to be a very old timelord.

The Sun has a photo gallery showing the return of a character from the past. The slide show is inside the article. Spoilers abound.

Hmmm. Now that we know who the new Doctor is and what character is returning.....anybody have the exact dialogue to spoilerize and refresh our memory on their previous encounter?

Being a family show you have to read between the lines. Or I was just using the term meaning a romantic, if not physical, relationship.

That's my point. The dynamic is still there, but not physically anymore. Maybe it doesn't matter because it's old hat by now, but I think it really helped sell the Rose/Doctor(Eccleston) dynamic in the first season. Even though their relationship was completely unlike human-human relationships, they tapped into a mild human cultural taboo.

No Chuck Taylor hightops? I have to agree that the Doctor doesn't have to completely change after every regeneration. Does he now no longer like how he used to dress?

With each Doctor, they create a new look for him.

How the hell is Tucker Carlson going to mate with himself?

Well, he very slightly trimmed his hair. In several shots from the on-set pics, you can see him having to straighten that mop to keep it out of his face. If that ends up on screen, it will get VERY annoying.

And I'm not a big fan of those boots, either. But that is a minor quibble (guess I'm just a fan of the quirkiness of the Converse hightops - probably because I wore them a lot as a kid ).

Re: Doctor Who Series 5 Discussion (BBC)

I like the new costume, it reminds me of Henry Jones Sr. The new Tardis looks a little fake/toy like but I suppose it could look a little different on the show with different lighting conditions and color timing.

He has a different personality after he regenerates, he isn't necessarily going to like what previous Doctors wore.

None of the new interior yet, but there is a shot with the new Police Box exterior.
