Dark Blue (Dylan McDermott) -- Series Debut -- "Pilot" -- 7/15/09

Dark Blue

Synopsis:

Spoiler:

The shadowy derring-do of an undercover task force comes to the fore in this crime series from executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer. In the premiere, Carter Shaw (Dylan McDermott) tries to take down a gang leader responsible for torturing an FBI agent and leaving him for dead. He also trains his newest team member, a fetching patrol cop (Nicki Aycox) who proves to be an expert prevaricator.

10 episodes ordered. I'm looking forward to this one since I saw the promos early this year. It's got a good lead-in with Leverage.

Trailer:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/D5BhuYA8vb0&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/D5BhuYA8vb0&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Appears to have a very Miami Vice-Heat vibe to it.

Sounds a lot like A&E's The Beast, which I loved, but didn't do Jack in the ratings. Maybe the Nicki Aycox eye candy will help this one.

If The Beast aired on a network like TNT, I think it would have done alot better in the ratings. I don't think people tune to A&E to watch badass cop dramas.

I think TNT has done a pretty good job promoting this to it's viewers.

Re: Dark Blue (Dylan McDermott) -- Series Debut -- "Pilot" -- 7/15/09

It was OK, but it got me wondering if The Beast was going to get a second season (haven't been following Swayze's condition).

It struck me as having potential if it could avoid the perceived need for Bruckenheimer to kick it up a notch. Also not sure if McDermott is the right guy for his character - he just seems to go into the yell/over-emotional mode in his other roles . I did like the UC's.

EDIT - Just searched and saw that The Beast was not picked up. Here's hoping this show evolves into the quality that I thought that show had (minus the ratings problems)

Re: Dark Blue (Dylan McDermott) -- Series Debut -- "Pilot" -- 7/15/09

Loved it!!!

I know this genre is nothing original and this will be compared to the Beast and The Shield, but I really liked this episode. I liked the introduction to all the characters including McDermott's character. I loved the way it was directed, the lighting and the score. Even though it's only the 1st episode, I think the show is already an improvement over TNT's last attempt at a Special UC Unit. Remember Wanted with Gary Cole & Rashida Jones?

For being primarily known as a TV director, I thought Danny Cannon did one hell of a job with the Pilot. In a way I felt like I was watching 44 minute feature film.

There were 2 pretty good shootouts that added to the feature film "feel" for me.

I know they probably don't want to blow their budget on the music, but I think the score/music helped with the pacing.

Will definitely be back next week. It was cool seeing Logan Marshall-Green in a very different look compared to when he played Ryan's brother on The OC.

Completely forgot to set the DVR for this one. Anyone know if it'll get a repeat?

I thought Dylan McDermott's character was horrible. Too concerned with being cool. I did like the chick, though.

Really? I disagree. You could have said the same thing about Chiklis' character on The Shield with him wearing the "Cool" sunglasses and the muscle shirts. You could have said the same thing with Swayze's Barker character on The Beast. I thought he played the character fine and was very subtile, didn't think he was overdoing being a badass. Even though he's the lead, I thought they gave pretty equal time spliting the characters screentime. I really did like Nicky Aycox's character and the fact that her character had a mysterious/criminal past.

Actually minor correction:

The Pilot is re-airing Sunday at 10pm on TBS

It's also re-airing next Monday (the 20th) at 11pm on TruTV

Ratings-wise, It did pretty damn good.

3.5M viewers.

The Beast never even got to close to having that kind of viewership.

I wasn't too impressed with it. maybe because Leverage is on right before it, Dark Blue just seemed slow and boring by comparison.

Hopefully it picks up.

You know...I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get into this last night. I think you hit it on the head.

I did record it, so I will check it out again (I made it through the first 20 mins).

But Nicky Aycox characters's "past" made my groan and McDermott was totally unconvincing as anything threatening. When he was "reactivating" the black dude (sorry forgot his name), there was ZERO tension in that scene.

It did have a "Heat" feel to it, and that is one my favorites. I will try this again.

Re: Dark Blue (Dylan McDermott) -- Series Debut -- "Pilot" -- 7/15/09

I can see both your points being that Dark Blue follows a very upbeat and fun show and the momentum sinks to a depressing/dreary tone.

I loved both Miami Vice (the Michael Mann movie not series) and Heat and this was very reminiscent in tone to both of them which is why I enjoyed the premiere.

Yeah that makes sense.

My two other points were eating at me. That whole, you-went-to-jail-and-now-are-a-cop-and-is-the-reason-I-stopped-watching-K-Ville plot point might be a deal breaker for me. Without giving too much away, does that plot point actually go somewhere or does it get more silly?

Re: Dark Blue (Dylan McDermott) -- Series Debut -- "Pilot" -- 7/15/09

That whole plot point is not even mentioned again from McDermott or Aycox's characters. There is a very brief scene at the end of the episode that pretty much wraps that whole thing up. I doubt it's going to be brought up again.

I was trying to follow up on TheKing's point that yeah this was alot slower compared to the pace of Leverage and was similar in pacing and tone to the movies I mentioned which I liked. And you were drained of the momentum.

I don't think her plot is way out of left field absurd. I got the impression that she had a criminal record as a youth/teenager and probably applied to the academy as an adult under a different name.

I agree. Dark Blue was good. But I didn't enjoy it much after watching Leverage. The two shows don't fit well together.

It may be wrapped up between the two characters, but I would bet it will come up again before the end of the season. If the file had just been her mug shots and arrest record then I could chock it up to just some character setup, but they made a point of showing (twice) the other guy's mug shot and the crime scene photos.

Just a reminder for those of you who missed this, it re-airs tonight at 10pm on TBS. That's right TBS, not TNT.
