Now THAT is how you do a season finale! I adored every minute of it!
It was great to find out that BOTH sides are bad and how, despite the ending being obvious, it all managed to remain thrilling from beginning to end. My only gripes were tha once again I was left wanting to see the Arcangel and I was left wishing this were a two hour finale.

Great finale.
Ruby's end would have been better if they hadn't been tipping off that something was up with her the entire episode.
If next season is it I wonder if the whole season is going to be them trying to send Lucifer back to hell.

I think they tipped people off to Ruby being bad because she's a well liked character and they wanted to get fans acclimated to the change. Unlike a disliked character turn in this season of 24.

That was an excellent episode. I could swear that during the big reveal to Dean in the rococo "green room", everything was bright and colorful until the angel revealed he had been playing Dean, and then the colors became more muted and gray. I went back and watched it, and it seemed like it really did change then... did anybody else notice that, or am I just seeing things.

Awesome finale, though Supernatural has the worst cliffhangers. *shakes fist*
I really wanted to see the archangel and Lucifer.
Looks like next season will start with a bang. And the apocalypse!

It would be great if they could make a theatrical movie after the final season. You know, a huge farewell and gift to the fans complete with Kansas' Carry On My Wayward Son playing during the end credits as Sam and Dean head off to parts unknown.
Unfortunately, they'd have to bog the whole thing down with tons of backstory to accomodate non-fans. I know X-Files: Fight The Future accomplished just that but it was never intended as a farewell to the series but rather as a means to extend the series. Still, it'd be a cool thing for them to do.

In retrospect, one thing really bugs me about the overall arc thus far. If, after the other 65 seals were broken, all it took to free Lucifer was to kill Lillith, why didn't she off herself? I know from a narrative perspective it made for a compelling twist but when you stop to think about it, I don't see why it had to a be a well-meaning schmuck the one who killed Lillith and broke Lucifer free.

She was well liked when Katie Cassidy played her, but apparently a LOT of people, myself included, hated Genevieve Cortese. Had she gotten a warmer reception, the writers probably would have kept her on the good side.

That was the highlight for me !
Overall, I don't know if it was just me setting my expectations too high, but I was expecting more of an "epic finish" for this season with something more along the lines of the Angel Series Finale.
This should've been a 2hr Season Finale, period. Although we got a kickass "reveal", we were teased throughout the finale (Arcangel battle with Castiel, Lucifer Rises, etc).
Now that we have a cliffhanger and the possibility of Kripke not returning, I don't know if I have high hopes for S5.
Clearly, Season 4 is hands-down the definitive season of Supernatural.

I think more had to happen than Sam just killing Lillith for his whole manipulation to prove necessary. Otherwise, as I said, Lillith could/should have killed herself in order to free Lucifer.
I think a better resolution would have been the brothers attempting to stop Lillith form breaking the 65th seal, that the seal was nigh impenetrable by any power possesed by any one demon, and the brothers ultimately failed because Sam was suckered into breaking it himself. Just then the brothers go to take on Lillith only to have her perplexingly off herself and through Ruby it's revealed that Lillith was the final seal.

I dunno, maybe suicide isn't the answer?
I had been wondering how they would get the brother's back together and in just one action it was done perfectly.
I'm not sure that an arcangel would look different then any of the other angels we've seen. I think angels only exist as the bright light when they aren't possessing anyone?
Great finale but I agree with others in saying I was hoping for a little more.

Wasn't the whole point that the archangels wanted the seals to be broken? Zachariah said that Lucifer should rise, destroy mankind and then Dean gets to kill him so it would be 'paradise on earth'.

Yes, that was the point. But the brothers didn't know that. And I'm surprised Lillith couldn't do this herself or why one of the angels couldn't kill Lillith instead. Why was Sam so important? And how was Dean supposed to beat Lucifer if he couldn't even take pseudo-demon Sam in a fight?

Ok episode. The ending was cool but everything in the "green room" was boring
