There is no poll this week because I have no idea who the couples are yet.

... and I couldn't find any spoilers online.

Re: So You Think You Can Dance - "The Top 20" (6/10-11/09)

Sorry Heat... that was some bad info.

So far Phillip and Jeanine did Hip Hop (NapppyTab).

Asuka and Vitolio did Broadway (Tyce).

Karla and Jonathon did Cha-Cha (Tony & Meridith).

Randi and Evan did a Jazz piece (Tyce).

Re: So You Think You Can Dance - "The Top 20" (6/10-11/09)

Paris "The Chin" and Tony "The Grin" did Hip Hop (NappyTab).

Jason and Kaitlin get to do Bollywood (Nikool?) with a kiss.

Janette and Brandon did the Foxtrot (Jean-Marc)... this pairing was correctly spoiled above.

Ashley and Kupono do a Jazz routine (Wade). "Jazz-blades" <- That was pure Wade

Melissa and Ade do Contemporary (Mandy Moore).

Kayla and Max do the Samba (Louis Van Amstel). Cool... they got Louie!!!!

Seemed like many of the contestants got to dance in their specialty tonight.

Re: So You Think You Can Dance - "The Top 20" (6/10-11/09)

The pairings have been corrected and are in the order that they danced tonight.

I think that Vitolio and Randi won't last more than a couple weeks. Vitolio - I just don't see why he's there. I really wish that Asuka had been paired up with Ade like I originally thought. Or if Asuka had been paired up with Max, that would have been a great couple when it came to ballroom dancing.

As far as Randi goes - very good dancer but I think that reminding viewers about twenty times that she's married and that any chemistry you see between her and Evan is fake really kills the mood and I think others will be turned off by that also.

And that crash test dummy routine - that was just stupid. Nice performances, hopefully the dancers are judged on their dancing and not by the routine.

Re: So You Think You Can Dance - "The Top 20" (6/10-11/09)

Favorite to okay performances:

Melissa/Ade - they hit the right emotional beats in their number, a very complimentary couple

Kayla/Max - Kayla's going to be hard to beat amongst the girls. Not sure if Max will be able to do well in other genres, but we'll see.

Caitlin/Jason - Jason is probably the best pure dancer, but not sure if he'll have the same upper body strength displayed by Brandon or Ade. Nice number, but I thought Caitlin was a little off in sync at times.

Randi/Evan - Very nice couple chemistry, good and subtle, thoughtful.

Janette/Brandon - Brandon might over-compensate on the "acting" and personality, but he's a front-runner. Janette is in the middle of the pack for me.

Ashley/Kupono - weird, quirky number, but each one sold his/her character, and also did well when they danced together.

Jeanine/Philip - thought the judges were a little too effusive for the first number, but it was a solid number. Jeanine's cute. I still see a little too much Jon Cryer in his face at times.

Bottom 3 couples:

Paris/Tony - Tony is not ready to be on this show. Not enough snap in his supposed genre

Asuka/Vitolio - They went through the motions, but didn't captivate. Also an unlucky break in dance style given the intangibles of the 2 dancers.

Karla/Jonathon - Jonathan's also not quite "seasoned" enough, still a bit boy-ish in movement, didn't quite buy his part in the dance. Kayla was holding back a little, I thought.

That didn't seem to hurt Kris Allen on American Idol when they shared his marital status early in the shows with the final 13 (or final 12). If you can dance, you can dance. A ring on a finger ain't going to matter that much.

Re: So You Think You Can Dance - "The Top 20" (6/10-11/09)

This show makes me happy. I always forget how much I miss it until it starts up again.

Really strong top 20, save a few weak apples.

Evan & Randi's number was the strongest for me. Also loved the ballet dancer Melissa and Ade and the samba routine Kayla & Max

Re: So You Think You Can Dance - "The Top 20" (6/10-11/09)

Very entertaining episode tonight.

Mary was great and annoying as shit. Loved the Botox line, I laughed my ass off.

My favorites tonight were:

Caitlin/Jason
Melissa/Ade
Kayla/Max

Melissa and Ade were probably my favorite overall because their routine had a really mature and sensual tone to it that I enjoyed. I also think Mandy Moore is great.

There were some other good performances, but those stood out IMO.

You have to wonder what goes on inside Wade Robson's brain. The guy comes up with some really weird shit.

I think Napoleon and Tabitha have already made me forget about Shane Sparks. They have done solid work on the Hip-Hop end. I wonder if Dan Karaty will be in the mix this season?

Re: So You Think You Can Dance - "The Top 20" (6/10-11/09)

Melissa and Ade really struck a cord with me. I like the fact that she's a little "older" and Ade is going to be huge I think.

Randi and someone said earlier didn't do herself any favors with the married thing. The thing about the first 5 weeks is that we feel these couples connect and that illusion isn't going to work with her if she keeps spouting off about her husband.

Really liked Kayla and Max as well but I think once he gets out of his element he'll probably struggle more then anyone.

Caitlin has been my favorite from the begining but now Ade, Melissa and Jason have moved up there with her.

Why is Tony on the show? I kept thinking when they were critiquing him is why did they put him on the show? He never showed anything from what they showed on TV and tonight proved that he just isn't good.

Should be a fairly easy night with Tony/Paris or Asuka/Vitolio or any combination of the 2 going.

For anyone interested, here are a bunch of official SYTYCD profile vids for each contestant from Youtube, just each couple talking about who they are, their backgrounds and whatnot. Interestingly, they are in pairs but not with their actual partners for whatever reason. They range from 3:39 to 7:28 in length.

Yeah, I still don't get that. His solo in Vegas with the pictures of Nigel (and later Cat) was clever in terms of gimmick but that's all there was to it - gimmick. I didn't see a whole lot in terms of great dancing there. Were the hip hop pickings that slim this year that he got the 2nd mandatory hip hop spot?

Naw, I think they were hoping that Alex's contract could be voided and they could drop Tony.... but then it was declined and they took Tony thinking "he'll be the first one gone."

Even though this competition is a bit different since it relies (at least early on) on pairings, I'd tend to agree that it shouldn't make a difference. There are always pairs where it's very obvious that the pair would never be a couple, and it doesn't hurt them. What might hurt is them pointing it out over and over.

Isn't Melissa married too (at least, my wife noticed a ring)?

Great top 20 last night, though I thought Tyce really did Asuka and Vitolio a great disservice. I'm not sure if they just couldn't handle more advanced steps or if it was just the genre, but it did seem pretty tame. Of course, the judges stopped short of calling Tyce out on it.

I do think it's unfair to critique a routine based on the routing immediately before it... but I have to admit that that's exactly what the audience is doing.

Of course we are. It came off of a high energy Hip-Hop number and then it went into a flat no energy routine. It's impossible not to compare them.

Eliminated:

Paris Torres and Tony Bellissimo

It seemed like they kind of preferred Paris over Asuka, but kept Asuka because of her different dancing abilities. Did you see her move on those high heels?

Hopefully Asuka and Vitolio have a good routine next week.

Paris suffered because they didn't want to split up any of the couples this early I think. Tony's solo was sort of pathetic, I mean I saw rerun do it 30 years ago and I think it was the exact same routine with no deviation.

I'm very happy with the results. To say that Paris' jawline distracted me would be a major understatement, and after the video of Tony's "best" performances, I have to wonder how he got in.
