Re: Scrubs posied to return for a 9th Season...

Why? Did did it all the time during the first eight seasons: His Story I-IV, Her Story I and II, Their Story I and II, and My Full Moon, which wasn't narrated, at all.

I remember them doing it a few times, but it seemed more like a gimmick to me. Maybe it can work.

This was easily my favorite show for years but I can't watch it anymore. Same thing for Seinfeld.

'Scrubs' shocker: School's in, hospital's out!

Scrubs boss Bill Lawrence said his cancellation-defying comedy would undergo an extreme makeover in its ninth season, and, man, he wasn't kidding. When the show returns next winter, the action will shift from the hospital to the classroom and make med-school professors of John C. McGinley's Dr. Cox and Donald Faison's Turk.

"It'll be a lot like Paper Chase as a comedy," Lawrence tells me. "It's going to be a different show. It'll still be life-and-death stakes, but if the show is just Scrubs again in the hospital with a different person's voiceover, it would be a disaster and people would be mad."

Of course, Sacred Heart won't go away altogether. Although J.D.'s old stumping ground no longer will serve as the show's base of operations, the students will occasionally rotate through its halls -- and bump into many of its familiar faces. In addition to McGinley and Faison, both of whom are expected to be full-time regulars alongside a quartet of newbies (most of them playing students), Scrubs vets Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes and Ken Jenkins have agreed to make guest appearances. (Neil Flynn has a costarring role as Patricia Heaton's husband in the new ABC sitcom The Middle, so his name-challenged Janitor will be MIA.)

"Med students in their first three years have to spend anywhere from 10 to 50 percent of their time at a hospital," Lawrence explains. "And that's when you'll see some of the [original cast members]. Continuity-wise, Sacred Heart will still exist with those people still working there."

But Lawrence insists "half the cast, if not 60 percent of it," will be comprised of freshmen, one of which will be more recognizable than the rest. "[ABC] is really after us to hire a big name," he reveals. "So one of them will be fairly famous."

To be honest I only cared before because it was Scrubs and I love it but now I am intrigued on a deeper level and look forward to this.

Re: Scrubs posied to return for a 9th Season...

Seems odd. I don't know how they're going to make Cox and Turk turning into med school teachers believable or organic. Doesn't seem to fit either of their characterizations.

I could buy Cox as a teacher, particularly in a paper chase sort of scenario (I don't think they actually teach med students like they do us lawyers, though). They'd have to get him there in a clever way if he had his prior job. Now that he's in Kelso's old gig, I don't see how they get him there.

Turk? Nah, I don't see him teaching.

This new turn of events sounds most intriguing. I wonder if the show will have a different name or subtitle.

The only odd thing is they spent all of last season introducing the interns as seemingly the potential 'next generation' but now it sounds like those characters won't even be part of this, except perhaps as background characters.

The worst part has gotta be... no Glenn Matthews.... errrr, Janitor. When he and Cox got together, it was always gold.

Re: Scrubs posied to return for a 9th Season...

I'm not feeling this scenario at all. It reminds me of Joey. Taking well established characters and moving them into another situation that doesn't really fit them.

Dr. Cox has always been about treating patients. While teaching new doctors has always been an important aspect to his character, it was never a role he seemed to relish in. He always seemed to do it to ensure that the next generation of doctors didn't suck horribly.

And Turk has always been ambitiously trying to climb the career ladder, with him just recently becoming chief surgeon. Having him suddenly change to a professor just doesn't seem to fit.

The only character I could have seen this for would have been Elliot. They had established that her character was starting to have second thoughts about practicing medicine during this past season. A change in career for her would have made some sense.

'Scrubs' to change its name & location next season, former TV star to be recruited

By Korbi Ghosh

June 22, 2009 8:40 AM

"Scrubs," the beloved series we said goodbye to last month when J.D. (Zach Braff) made his exit from Sacred Heart, will return to the schedule this winter, but it won't be the same show... not at all.

"Scrubs" e.p. Bill Lawrence told EW.com last week that when the sitcom comes back, it'll no longer take place in the hospital, but in a medical school with professors Cox (John C. McGinley) and Turk (Donald Faison) instead.

Sacred Heart won't disappear completely though. Dr. Cox and Dr. Turk's students will end up seeing several familiar faces while doing rotations there every now and then... Braff, Sarah Chalke (Elliot), Judy Reyes (Carla) and Ken Jenkins (Dr. Kelso) have signed on to appear as guest stars throughout the season.

The med students will be comprised of actors new to the "Scrubs" family, though casting has not yet begun. Lawrence did, however, mention that ABC is encouraging them to hire one big name, someone recognizable.

Sources close to the series tell me "Gilmore Girls"' Lauren Graham is currently at the top of their wish list.

As for last season's newbies, Eliza Coupe, Betsy Beutler, Sonal Shah and Todd Bosley, the interns who were once rumored to be "Scrubs" future, I'm told Coupe will likely be the only one considered to return in some regular capacity.

Neil Flynn (The Janitor) and Christa Miller (Jordan) have both landed series regular roles on new sitcoms, however Christa can do double duty on "Scrubs" since her new gig is Lawrence's other show, "Cougar Town," which will film right next door.

No, not next door to the abandoned hospital in the Valley. "Scrubs" has actually packed up shop, its sets will be built on a studio lot in Culver City.

Insiders tell me the producers are busy brainstorming a new name for the show as well... something that will probably include "Scrubs," but somehow distinguish that it's different from the show we've watched for the last eight years.

Any ideas?
I say we all give it a chance.

Chris

This sounds much better than just continuing on with Scrubs in its original form. I predict one season and out though.

Definitely the best of the four new interns, however for the first time ever, I enjoyed all four of the noobs last season.

I'm surprised at Bill Lawrence. Does he really want to be behind this century's "AfterMASH"? (Hey, "AfterSCRUBS", I like it!) I've lost a lot of respect for him... but I guess if they throw enough money at you, anyone will put aside their integrity.

Scrubs: The New Class?

Which is why I like Dr. Cox in this role. Cox was always funniest when doing things he had to do, but hated. Teaching will likely set him off and will leave room to a lot of Hugh Jackan hating rants.

I do agree with Turk though, the role seems off. Although he can be the ying to Cox's yang since he's the kind of character that would enjoy something like this. It can set up a good cop/bad cop thing.

I'm guessing the set up will be that since Turk is chief of surgery and Cox is chief of medicine that somehow we'll learn that part of the job is teaching and I'm assuming the classroom is right in or around Sacred Heart. So it's not like they're leaving their old positions, this is just part of their job.

This sounds like an absolute trainwreck. Still, I'm willing to let Bill Lawrence try it, if anyone can pull it of it's him.

Thumbs up to bringing Jo back though. Loved her.

We're going to learn that part of the job is teaching after years of nothing at all about that? Nope. Not gonna buy it. They should find a funny way to pull off destroying Sacred Heart in the first 3 minutes of the first episode and explain them teaching because it was the best gig they could get or something like that.

^That actually brings a smile to my face, and since they have admitted that the hospital as turned in to a dump it would be perfect.
