Eliza Dushku:
We shot the first pilot, Joss did, in sort of a noir style, and I think first and foremost, Fox didn’t like that feel. So there were a few things they wanted different, and they wanted the story to unfold in different ways.
I understand it from a business perspective, and from Fox’s view, but at the same time, we’ve now done 13 episodes, and people have said that the show took off once they finally realized that Joss is best off left alone to do his thing. That happens around episode six—six through 13 are just extraordinary. I love one, two, three, four, and five, but Joss’ first script that he did after the pilot is number six, which is called “Man On The Street,” and it is just unbelievable. From that point on, the world unfolds in Joss’ way, with Joss’ speed, and it’s really remarkable.

And again, we want people to come and show up on our first Friday night, but we want people to stick around and see the show evolve. Especially for some of our diehard fans, take it through episodes six through 13, because that’s where I feel Joss got to take the reins back a little bit. And the show really gets pretty remarkable at that point. The first six episodes are sort of tailored and monitored for the network and for people that are late to the party, and every episode is more or less self-contained, and people can come into the show and get the premise. But that being said, there were some things we had to sacrifice.

Re: Dollhouse -- "Stage Fright" -- 2/27/09

How did an episode that started out so horrible end up so awesome? I hated the A story with Echo and the whiney diva but was into the B story with Ballard and the Active. Sadly, the B story got cut short and I was forcing myself for the most part to watch the rest of the episode. And then Echo suddenly hit that whiney bitch with a folding chair. I loved every last minute that unfolded after that.

And I really enjoyed the interaction between Echo and Cierra pre imprint, post imprint, and that brief exchange after they were both wiped.

Next week's episode promises to be a lot of fun.

Despite a shitty pilot, this show may actually win me over.

I thought this was a pretty "meh" episode. Will stick with it, though.

That Penny Arcade cartoon is probably the funniest thing, ever, in the history of the human race. It's so funny that including a smiley in this post wouldn't even begin to do it justice, so I won't bother.

Re: Dollhouse -- "Stage Fright" -- 2/27/09

The rationale behind using the actives in certain scenarios is, strained, at best. Yet, I want to keep watching. Perhaps it is due to some loyalty to Joss, or perhaps it's because the man knows how to put women on screen that I cannot stop looking at, but there is something there. I feel like he definitely has a plan where he wants this story to go, and I have a feeling it's going to be pretty damn good. The only problem is I don't see him getting the chance to ever tell that complete story, and I wonder if it's better to quit now and save myself the heartache later.

Of course, I won't do that. He may not be the greatest writer, and he may be too in love with the "Joss talk" he throws into his shows, and perhaps we fans overrate him, but I find that what he puts on screen just works for me. I feel like whatever the setting he chooses, his shows are always about people, and how those people react to extraordinary circumstances, and I feel few people can write characters like he does. I hope he finds a medium that he can flourish in because I just don't think that TV is going to be it anymore.

Yay, at least we get an episode where they aren't whoring out Echo.

Yeah, the neighbor is cute.

Well. This week was the best episode so far and the first episode that makes me believe that the show actually has some potential. B Story with Agent Ballard definitely was the better story.

Couple good lines:
"Navy... Old Navy. I did retail."

"SOMEBODY IS EATING A MINT! I can't breathe!"

Re: Dollhouse -- "Stage Fright" -- 2/27/09

The week to week stories, for the most part...suck. The backstory is getting good - I liked it a lot this week; but they have to do a little bit better with these weekly stories - they almost just seem like filler to stuff between the story arcs. Do you think they were trying to make a statement about the singer being 'programmed' and not really having a life... found that incredibly heavy handed and smack, let's get out the frying pan and hit the audience over the head with the irony! At the end they tried to salvage it with a 'she's going outside the box, so something special must be going on, but for the most part I just want to fast forward through the weekly stories, except when they have Echo changing clothes. From the previews, next week's story seems like it may have some tie-in to the main story arc so who knows maybe this part of the show will get better...

I find the Dushku quotes above pretty funny.... basically trying to say in a semi-polite 'Fox leave us the hell alone.'

I must just be easy to please because I love the show. Loved the second one as well. Pilot wasn't much, but I expect little out of pilots.

What was with the head shake no Echo gave Sierra at the end? And i forget his name, but does anybody else want to beat the crap out of the tech guy? He seems like a complete dick.

It looked like Sierra was going to hug, or smile at, or generally be friendly to Echo. Echo seems to recognize that wouldn't be a good idea in front of the others and told her to act like they didn't know each other, as they shouldn't.

KVRDave, I'm with you. I'm sucked in already.

Didn't feel this episode. It was only okay at best, IMO. I enjoyed last week's much more.

Last week's episode is the only one I've really liked so far, but I'll stick around to see if it really does pick up in episode 6.

So Mr. "Doolhouse" is just an implanted decoy? Interesting.

Yeah, I was wondering about that too.

And who played the main singer? She looked familiar.

They aren't supposed to recognize each other. If they are becoming "friends" and remembering they are friends, that's probably a bad thing for the agency. I wonder if that's what they mean by having a "composite event."

So far the show just feels... pedestrian. I'll wait to see if it does in fact pick up at episode 6. Whedon's earned that much with Buffy, Angel, and Firefly.
