Interesting. That clip from Dec sounded iffy, but the new cast additions sound promising.
Still sounds like ST: Voyager though. =/

EW.com has a promotional photo up of the cast. I'm actually really looking forward to watching this incarnation with Stargate.

Well, this is good news for SG-1 fans. Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping and Michael Shanks will make guest appearances on SGU.
Now, they need to get Joe Flanigan from SGA to make an appearance or two.

The Sci Fi Channel has lined up guest stars for its upcoming series "SGU: Stargate Universe."
"SGU," toplined by Robert Carlyle, Lou Diamond Phillips and Ming-Na, follows a group of survivors aboard an ancient ship who are unable to return to Earth.
Four veterans of the "Stagate" franchise, Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks and Gary Jones, will reprise their roles in guest stints.
Anderson plays General O'Neil, the former leader of the elite military team SG-1. Tapping plays Samantha Carter, an astrophysicist and U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel. Shanks plays Dr. Daniel Jackson, Stargate's archeologist and linguist. Jones plays Chief Master Sgt. Walter Harriman, commander technician of the team.
Additionally, "Stargate" alum Christopher McDonald will play Sen. Alan Armstrong, the U.S. senator and head of the International Oversight Committee that governs the Stargate program. He is the father to Chloe Armstrong (Elyse Levesque).
Grammy-nominted Janelle Monae will play herself and will perform with her band two songs from her latest album, "Many Moons" and "Sincerely."
Carlo Rota will play Carl Strom, head of the International Oversight Advisory, the civilian oversight committee that heads up the Atlantis expedition and all funding. 'Stargate Universe' nabs guest starsSci Fi recruits Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda TappingBy Nellie Andreeva

I do have cable(finally caved in for sports 2 years ago). I did't get Syfy (official?) in HD up until a few months ago though.
I'm good to go. I've never watched SG-1 or Atlantis weekly, I watched all 15 seasons on DVD as they were released.

Looks really good. Looking forward to it.
No, you should be cool watching this if you haven't seen SG-1 or Atlantis yet. It's an entirely different cast and looks like a fresh new story without any ties to the previous shows.
BTW, I heard this is the most expensive Stargate incarnation. That's probably why SyFy cancelled Atlantis and devoted more money to this.

Re: Robert Carlyle to lead Stargate Universe
Plot is a shameless rehash of Voyager and Battlestar: Galactica. "We gotta get back home...to EARTH!" Meh.

There are only so many possible settings for these type of shows (exploring, marooned, distant outpost, etc..), it's all about the execution.

That does look good! Looks much more edgy and dark than SG-1 or SGA. It also looks like they've updated some of the SGverse and perhaps the budget.

The Futon Critic has a review of the pilot and first episode. Essentially, "Good, but not great".
There's a few spoilers if you don't know much about the plot.
