Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part III (2008-09 Season)

Nice to see that Fring is doing well. I think I'm done with Grey's and their stupid storyline(s) so I'm a little surprised to still see it's getting such high numbers. Also, I think it's sad to see shows like Smallville and Gossip Girl can't even get the bottom of the list and beat the likes of the awful Knight Rider.

Actually, you can blame the cutbacks at the LA Times which prints this list out. They always used to publish the ratings for all shows, even those that got less than a million viewers (see CW on Sundays). But now they have shrunk the space where they print these figures. Even their online print of the ratings only goes as far as # 82.

Nice to see the list go deeper, but I find it hard to believe that less than 2M people are watching some of these shows. I really wish there was a 21st century answer to replace Neilsen - especially with the internet and the advent of DVRs.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part III (2008-09 Season)

Just wanted to add, those are shocking #'s for the Office. It went down from a preliminary 29.69 million viewers to 22.90 million viewers. That is not good news when you consider the following:

2008: House - 29.04
2007: Criminal Minds: 26.31
2006: Grey's Anatomy: 37.88
2005: Simpsons: 23.07
2004: Survivor: 33.53

I also don't think anything will ever beat the 106 million that the finale of MASH had. I was one of those 106 million.

When you think of all the alternatives that people have to do in their lives these days, there will be nothing, not even the Super Bowl, that can surpass that figure.

I was wondering how that stacked up to previous year's post-Super Bowl show. It's too bad more people didn't tune in because that was one of the funniest episodes of The Office I have ever seen.

All I can think of is that everyone was pissed off at the game (like I was). Was anyone really rooting for the Steelers except Steelers fans? I hope not.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part III (2008-09 Season)

These probably don't belong in here, but here are the weeks cable top 15 cable ratings.

USA is making a killing these days (Burn Notice and Monk ranking 2nd and 3rd respectively, with Psych cracking the top 15 as is normally the case.)

Quote:
Rankings for the top 15 programs on cable networks as compiled by Nielsen Media Research for the week of Jan. 26-Feb. 1. Day and start time (EST) are in parentheses:

1. "The Closer" (Monday, 9 p.m.), TNT, 4.63 million homes, 6.24 million viewers.

2. "Burn Notice" (Thursday, 10 p.m.), USA, 3.86 million homes, 5.37 million viewers.

3. "Monk" (Friday, 9 p.m.), USA, 3.72 million homes, 5.39 million viewers.

4. "WWE Raw" (Monday, 10 p.m.), USA, 3.69 million homes, 5.31 million viewers.

5. "WWE Raw" (Monday, 9 p.m.), USA, 3.46 million homes, 5.02 million viewers.

6. "NCIS" (Monday, 7 p.m.), USA, 3.31 million homes, 4.19 million viewers.

7. "NCIS" (Wednesday, 7 p.m.), USA, 3.22 million homes, 4.28 million viewers.

8. "NCIS" (Thursday, 7 p.m.), USA, 3.219 million homes, 4.15 million viewers.

9. "NCIS" (Tuesday, 7 p.m.), USA, 3.213 million homes, 4.21 million viewers.

10. "SpongeBob SquarePants" (Saturday, 9:30 a.m.), Nickelodeon, 3.16 million homes, 4.43 million viewers.

11. "The O'Reilly Factor" (Monday, 8 p.m.), Fox News Channel, 3.12 million homes, 3.96 million viewers.

12. "Psych" (Friday, 10 p.m.), USA, 2.98 million homes, 4.31 million viewers.

13. "The O'Reilly Factor" (Wednesday, 8 p.m.), Fox News Channel, 2.94 million homes, 3.89 million viewers.

14. "SpongeBob SquarePants" (Saturday, 9 a.m.), Nickelodeon, 2.93 million homes, 3.89 million viewers.

15. "The O'Reilly Factor" (Thursday, 8 p.m.), Fox News Channel, 2.92 million homes, 3.81 million viewers.
The ranking is # of households, not # of viewers. What makes me laugh is you can tell what people watch alone (NCIS, O'Reilly) and with friends/family (Psych).

RichC2, this is perfect here. You're hired!

And USA has better ratings than the CW.

I don't know if those SpongeBobs are new or not, but they still get great ratings.

Friday Night Lights hits at show #85, one of the worst ratings-wise for NBC. I still don't get why people don't watch this show as so many of us think it's one of the best on the air, and this season is so strong, too.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part III (2008-09 Season)

Sorry, I never started watching it. When it started there was too much to watch and I wasn't drawn to it. Maybe when the full series set on DVD goes down below $30, I will buy it. Probably in 2020 or so.

That's what happened with Buffy. Never saw an episode, but when the series set was on sale a couple of months ago for <$70, I picked it up. But I probably won't watch them until 2020 or so.

I only watched 3 of the top 25 shows from last week (not counting the Super Bowl):

6) The Office (Post Super Bowl episode; probably the 1st and last time that The Office will be my most watched show of the week)
9) House
23) The Big Bang Theory
30) How I Met Your Mother
55) The Office (Thursday)
66) Scrubs (9:00)
68) Scrubs (9:30)
71) My Name is Earl
85) Friday Night Lights
92) Family Guy
100) American Dad
106) The Simpsons (OUCH!)

American Dad that aired Sunday @ 8:30 placed 109th. The Superbowl destroyed everything, guess it really is wise to air reruns. The only Top 25 show I watched (other than the Superbowl) was Lost. Hell the only Top 100 shows I watch regularly are Lost, How I Met Your Mother (which was in re-run), Scrubs, 30 Rock (re-run), Family Guy, American Dad, and normally The Simpsons. Weee.

It's got the Fox sweet spot - right after Idol. That's the spot that made House a hit (which had abysmal ratings initially).

Not really doubled. I think it debuted around 10 million people. Now it gets about 12 million on average.

The first live "American Idol" results show of the season carried FOX to a healthy ratings win Wednesday night.

FOX averaged a 10.3 rating/16 share for the evening, easily beating CBS, 7.4/12, for the top spot (FOX had 6 million more viewers). ABC was a distant third at 4.6/7. FOX, 3.9/6, came in fourth, while The CW barely registered at 0.6/1.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX's 6.5 rating more than doubled the 3.0 for No. 2 ABC. CBS took third at 2.9. NBC averaged 1.7 and The CW a paltry 0.3.

The "American Idol" results show scored a 14.0/22 and 24.4 million viewers at 8 p.m., with no other network coming close. CBS was the best of the rest with "The New Adventures of Old Christine," 4.7/8, and "Gary Unmarried," 4.6/7. NBC's "Knight Rider" and a "Lost" rerun on ABC each drew a 3.6/6, with ABC grabbing a few more viewers. The CW aired a "Privileged" rerun.

CBS took the lead at 9 p.m. with "Criminal Minds," 9.5/15. FOX's "Lie to Me" took second in households at 6.6/10, but a new "Lost" (6.5/10) on ABC brought in a few more viewers. "Life" earned a 3.3/5 for NBC, while The CW went with a "90210" encore.

"CSI: NY," 8.1/14, kept CBS on top at 10 p.m. "Law & Order" scored only a 4.8/8 for NBC, but that was good enough to beat ABC's "Life on Mars," 3.7/6, for second.

Characters died, became killers, were crippled and had lots of pouches and belts on their costumes, and we, this generation of creators, represent the undoing of that." - Ethan Van Sciver
