Why did they separate Lennon/McCartney songs and Beatles songs? Aren't they the same? Either way, I am so over the Beatles. Yes, they were good. But can't we move on already??

Love how it became "Cook Comes Alive" out of nowhere.

I wonder what changed between Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. There was such an awkward avoidance of the word "Beatles", and then all of a sudden, they couldn't say it enough. Still, call me when they do Monkees Night.

Amanda seems happy again, and she's not staring at the floor as much. Also, I understood at least 3 words. I think this performance easily elevates her to the 11th best contestant left.

I've decided I don't want KLC voted off the show, because then we have to hear one of her performances twice. At least she's wising up and showing some leg, but nothing short of Haley Pants will keep her around much longer. It's interesting, because she actually has a nice vocal range, just zero talent to control it or remain anywhere close to the tune. Even got the dreaded "You look beautiful" from Paula.

I'm impressed with Giggles. He's young and goofy and was in real danger of crumbling emotionally after the disaster of last week, but he recovered very well and didn't miss a beat from his earlier momentum. That's just good programming right there.

What the hell happened to Michael Johns? I never thought he was great or anything, but he never really sucked until now. Wow. Shit.

Wait, wait, wait. I was done typing about this asshat, but first he nods in approval trying to piggyback onto the ear monitor excuse when he's not even wearing one, and then he plays the dead friend card for the second week in a row. Douche.

They should really stop reminding people that Brooke is married. It was a pleasant performance, but easily her worst. Pretty hard to top what she's done in recent weeks. Stop talking, Brooke. Stop.

For the first time I can remember, Cook actually tried to rock instead of that whiny emo garbage he's been peddling. It wasn't bad, but the voicebox work was weak. And have I mentioned his hair yet? I love how Simon said it wasn't as good as Cook thought it was. That's exactly how I felt. His performance was annoyingly smug.

Dear God, Carly's top looks ridiculous! Same thing as last week. I was enjoying the performance until she tried to go all diva on it and blew her high notes. Can Randy and Paula get their heads any further up her ass? I've never really liked Carly, but her explanation for the song choice sounded genuine to me, which is rare. Most of those "moments" are always so calculated and phony.

Good to see Castro admit that he fucked up Hallelujah when the judges completely ignored it. Anyway, on to the song. Your daddy works in porno now that mommy's not around. She used to love her heroine, but now she's underground. Whoops. Wrong one. Wrong song for Castro too.

Damn, Syesha is a beautiful girl. Have I said that before? Showcasing her assets too. Beauty and brains. It was a shaky vocal, but stealing a page from Brooke's playbook, she made up for it with emotion and conviction.

Chikezie's really coming into his own on this show. The tempo change was abrupt and awkward, but I strangely enjoyed both sides of his performance. And he's one of the few people on this show who can actually hit the notes he's supposed to be singing with any real consistency.

Newsflash, Ramiele: David doesn't want to be your "big brother". It didn't work, mainly because the song is junk, and she's more of a ballad singer, but it was nice to see her finally show some real personality while on stage. If she had that energy every week, she'd be doing much better on this show.

Is this thing finally over yet?

Amanda definitely missed a perfect opportunity to break out a classic George Harrison masterpiece:

Couldn't think of any lyrics
No I never wrote the lyrics
So I'll just sing any old lyrics
That come to mind, child

You really need words
Whole lotta rhyming words
You gotta rhyme so many words, mm-mm
To do it, to do it, to do it, to do it
To do it, to do it right, child

This song is just six words long ...

I gotta fill time
Three minutes worth of time
Oh, how will I fill so much time, mm-hmm
I'll throw in a solo, a solo, a solo
A solo, a solo here

I'm just starting to watch the show and did Amanda say "shit?" It sounded like she said "I want people to think that shit looks awesome and I want to see that show." Or something like that... did I mishear?

If Brooke doesn't make it singing after Idol, she can always get her own talk show. Good Lord.. does she ever shut up?

Amanda sucked
Kristy was a close second

I thought Carly did a great job. Simon was totally off about her.

What the hell was Carly wearing? Do they not have fashion consultants at this stage in the contest? I thought she butchered her song, too.

Syesha, on the other hand, looked beautiful. Great neckline on that dress!

I really liked KLC's "Rescue Me" from a while back, even bought it from iTunes. But honestly, she hasn't done much since.

Amanda, on the other hand, hasn't done anything. Time for her to leave.

Carly did a nice job, but not really the best song choice. But I liked how she was able to talk back.

Castro was again pandering. Like Simon said, if that version was on the radio, he'd turn it off.

Brooke - yikes, terrible song choice. Need to stand still.

David Archeluta - pretty good, even gave me goosebumps, which I tried hard to fight off.

Sysesha was good, she has enough talent to last another week.

Michael Johns was alright, seemed to slip a bit and was a bit down, he did mention about the song being his dead friend's favorite.

Michael Johns never should have attempted A Day in the Life. You have to sing the Paul section of that song, but the song has to build to the Paul section. A mistake.

Here Comes the Sun was an obvious choice for Brooke, but it didn't work at all. And talking over the judges criticism is never a good idea. Still, I like that someone sang a George song. She might have connected better with Something though.

I wouldn't have sang Yesterday (too iconic), but I thought it was easily Syesha's best performance since the start of the top 24. She deserves to be safe.

Chikieze's I've Just Seen a Face was the most memorable performance of the night for me. Not sure if I entirely liked it, but he took a real risk without coming off like a douchebag (see David Cook and the voicebox...I was actually enjoying his Daytripper until he did that).

Since Amanda isn't going anywhere I think it's Kristy Lee's turn to go home. Ramiele might also be in trouble.

I think Michael Johns is in big trouble after that performance, you may see him in the bottom 2 with KLC.

Why do you want to see Archuleta kicked off? I agree with Simon about Cook. He's not as good as he thinks he is. That half twisted tongue sticking out of his mouth after he's done performing. He does certainly feel he's the shit. I can't stand the guy. Archuleta kicks his ass talent wise.

Amanda Overmeyer - "Back in the USSR" while it was a fun performance, I'm not sure I understood 1/3 of the words she was slogging through, each and every performance, but she's who she is.

Kristy Lee Cook - "You Have To Hide Your Love Away" Started out slow and I was worried, and stayed worried through about 2/3 of the song because she just didn't quite 'get' the song, and didn't really use the hook as well as she should have in her performance.

David Archuleta - "The Long and Winding Road" Kudos to David for not forgetting the lyrics, and he gave his usual level of performance because he was controlled, but he delivered most of the emotion from the song, so he has rebounded well.

Michael Johns - "A Day in the Life" I thought he did okay, but the arrangement was not cohesive enough, but I think he needs to stand still when he sings because he's a little awkward at times with the shoulder sway.

Brooke White - "Here Comes the Sun" Yowie, a little too much smiling from Brooke, she needs to stay a little still because her movements were just all over the place, very distracting to me. It got boring half-way through the song.

David Cook - "Daytripper" That was weird in spots (what was with the voicebox?), and he was mic'd too low, because his background singers were carrying him in some parts of the song, and he got a little boring towards the end.

Carly Smithson - "Blackbird" Hated her last big note, but everything else was pretty smooth, and had really nice tone, with some good melody to the notes, but she almost got through the song, but still couldn't not let loose with one big note that just didn't support the rest of the performance. Plus, really poor choice of clothing (rose-laded top).

Jason Castro - "Michelle" Overall, actually a relaxed rendition, but he was still a little intimidated by the French verses, and he start walking around the song, if that makes any sense.

Syesha Mercado - "Yesterday" Now that's how you hit a high note within the framework of the song (Carly, are you listening?). She was steady and consistent, with just enough angst to sell the song and impart the emotional core of the song.

Chikezie - "I've Just Seen Her Face" This was an average performance, and the harmonica didn't help things. I thought Kristy Lee cook should have done this song. Overall, an imminently forgettable choice. I thought Jim Sturgess sang it better in "Across the Universe".

Ramiele Malubay - "I Should Have Known Better" Quite the prophetic song choice because her voice was so flat, and her head kept shaking around, making her vocals fade in and out, and she really didn't perform the song well (seen better at high school musicals/revivals). Just a jaw-droppingly bad song choice and performance.

-------------

Rankings

Enjoyable
David Archuleta
Syesha Mercado

Middling
Amanda Overmeyer
Carly Smithson

Under-performed
Michael Johns
David Cook
Chikezie
Brooke White
Jason Castro

Once was enough:
Ramiele Malubay
Kristy Lee Cook

I think Ramiele or Kristy Lee Cook is going home.

So Paul McCartney was in a band before The Wings?

Really, that joke was better twenty-five years ago when the Wings were still popular. Anyway, this was a very rough night tonight, I'm actually looking forward to hearing a mentor next week. As for who will be voted off... I've got to go with KLC - she didn't bring it down, dawg, plus she was the third singer so a lot of voting people would not have seen her performance.

And I would have *loved* for one of the people after Carly to write a number on their nuckles. I love her voice, but the tattoo of a seven was over the top in my opinion and yes, I really do believe it's real. Just look at her freak-show husband.

And Syesha - I didn't like the hair... but she was showing tons of cleavage this week, which is fine with me. What's funny about her is when she was talking about doing a Beatles song in a variety show in middle school. That would have been in 2000 or 2001.

That's the song that David Cook should have done. He could have gone off on that song, smashing guitars and voiceboxes, too.

Really disappointed with this week. Enjoyed Chickeze's performance the best, I like how he mixes it up and takes risks.

Dont get the love for Carly AT ALL. She does nothing for me. I dont even like to watch her perform. I dont think she is going anywhere anytime soon.

Hated Kristy Lee and Ramielle. Was disappointed in Michael Johns and Brooke but thinking they both will be safe. Sayesha sounded shaky too me but she really sold that song. David Cook was pretty good. I actually enjoyed it.

David Archuletta was the best this evening. His dad is supposed to be a real jerk and stage dad and I did notice him with David and the voice coach.

I almost forgot about Amanda and Jason. Guess that says it all. Forgettable performances tonight. She is a one trick pony.

-I think Amanda sails through. And I'll predict the judges turn on her viciously next week, now that she's made the tour (I was getting the sense they liked her more for meeting the "rocker chick" quota instead of her voice). I do like her reply to the criticism - she's playing the kind of music you'd hear if you her play live. And that means no sappy ballads. I hope she sticks to her guns.

-Kristy was better, but I think she's a goner. Don't worry das ... just put your fast forward button to use tomorrow.

-Everything I predicted about David A came to pass. I still don't see how he's so amazing he deserves to be 4 times as popular as number two. But admittedly he was one of the better ones on a weak night. And why does Randy have to suggest to David to include more vocal runs? Don't we have enough of those.

-I'm mystified at Michael Johns. He's nearly as much of a ringer as Carly, clearly has the voice, but is blowing it week after week. I don't think he's in danger yet, but a couple more weeks and he will be. Terrible arrangement - that song just doesn't work cut down like that. And the singing wasn't good. And a shitty move to pimp the dead friend for sympathy.

-You knew what song Brooke was doing as soon as you saw the bright yellow dress I love that she couldn't contain the "Wooooooo"

-I like that David C gave props to the cover band. Voice box didn't work for me either - you have so little time, that was just weird to throw that in.

-Carly, please stop with the tattoos! I have a horrible feeling in 10 years she'll look as bad as her husband.

-I thought Paula was spot-on in criticizing Jason. The song was paced too fast, and the clap-along didn't suit the wistful romantic tone of the original. I'm also somewhat disappointed Jason didn't pick one of the drug songs.

-Another vote in favor of the boobs being brought out by Syesha. Just in time for the family in the audience too! I miss the 'fro though. I hope she sticks around another week.

-Didn't like the country speed-up of Chikezie's song. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the bottom group.

-I appreciate Ramiele speeding things up. But this came across like a Disney Channel performance. OK, but forgettable. Surprised Simon didn't give her crap about the title of the song.

So, my bottom 3 would be KLC, Chizezie, and Ramiele. With KLC going home. Though she is the last country singer in the group, so I wouldn't be shocked if either of the other 2 went home instead.

I was actually expecting Simon to say that when KLC sang "You're No Good" a few weeks ago.

Speaking of KLC, she gave me the best moment of the night tonight with:

"I'm gonna blow you out of your socks!"

Just a few posts up

Didn't Simon refer to a performance as "Wet" as well?

And did anyone see how captivated Seacrest was when he was handling, adjusting, and playing with the talk box?

I just saw this pointed out at VFTW. I thought it couldn't be true, so I just checked on my tv for myself - and it's legit. Whoever did the closed captioning was either slacking off, or they're not a Carly fan. Here's how her name was spelled all night (at least for the East Coast feed):
