Oprah Winfrey getting her own TV network

NEW YORK - Oprah Winfrey is getting her own TV network.

Discovery Communications and Winfrey announced a deal Tuesday where the Discovery Health network will be turned over to Winfrey next year, becoming OWN — the Oprah Winfrey Network.

The cash-free transaction involved Winfrey turning over her Web site to Discovery, while the communications company makes her chairman of the network, which is currently seen in 68 million homes, said David Zaslav, Discovery Communications chief.

"The focus of the channel will be the focus of Oprah's brand, which is the educate and inspire people to live the best life they can," Zaslav said.

Some of Winfrey's stable of regular contributors could be expected to be part of the programming, he said. Winfrey's current talk show, as well as rights to use of reruns, is spoken for until the end of the 2010-11 season.

Besides hosting syndication's top-rated talk show, Winfrey puts out her own magazine.

I thought she owned part of the Oxygen network.

Oxygen was sold to NBC Universal and is no longer privately owned by its original investors (including Oprah)

Once again "her" station isn't even going to have rights to her show or even the reruns. I guess they'll have the the "After show". A network built on an after show, probably a few hand picked talk shows ala Dr. Phil and Rachel Ray and a boat load of shitty chick flicks. I'll pass.

Dr. Oz already has a lot of specials on Discovery Health so I imagine we will see more things like that.

Well she's certainly going to be too busy for her ol' Mingie now!

Oprah is so noble and respected now, but people seem to forget that in the early days of her show, she was doing the same type of topics like Springer.

I think that's bad. Discovery Health had some good programs from the BBC, and I think they are not going to be shown anymore.

Yep,she sure did. But then she smartened up, cleaned up her show, and flew past Springer, Maury, Rikki Lake, and all the rest.

That's certainly debatable. A lot of the crap she puts one is just as bad, if not worse. People don't have to trying to hit or talk voer each other for the content to be nothing but trash.

Same goes for the gas bag Dr. Phil.

Funny you should mention that. I was just watching an old VHS of her appearance when Letterman took "Late Night" to Chicago. He was giving her a hard time about that morning's show "Satanic Dismemberment." She defended it then, but now she wouldn't touch that with a ten-foot pole.

No it isn't. I think the proof is in her success.

Either way, she no longer does "My husband cheated with my Mother now she's pregnant" and "Who's my baby's daddy" shows. She does more positive and informative shows.

I like how the network is called "OWN". This woman isn't going to be happy until she possesses everything, possibly including our immortal souls.

Trash suceeds very well on TV. Oprah was/is far from alone in that.

Just because she changed her focus doesn't mean she doesn't still put out trash. It's simply trash for a different audience.

The irony here is that I'm pretty sure the Health channel was the only one of the Discovery offshoots I have ever watched anything on (yes, that includes Animal Planet).

Maybe they'll re-allocate the health programming to one of the other channels.

I refuse to shop at WalMart. I closed my BoA account, and refuse to bank with them again. I refuse to watch Oprah. I shall refuse to watch OWN.

Re: Oprah Winfrey getting her own TV network (Discovery Health network)

Major update!

Report: Oprah Winfrey may move show to cable in 2011
By Hanh Nguyen

November 5, 2009 11:13 AM

Oprah Winfrey's media empire may drastically change within the next two years.

"The Oprah Winfrey Show" may be moving off network to cable as of 2011, according to a report by Deadline Hollywood.

A rep for Harpo Productions tells Zap2it: "She has not made a decision yet. As she has previously stated, she'll make an announcement before the end of the year."

The story by Nikke Finke claims that the Oprah Winfrey Network, owned by Discovery Communications, was supposed to launch as a joint venture between Winfrey and Discovery, but was delayed. Now it seems that Discovery is giving her an ultimatum: move the show off syndication and on to OWN or lose the network altogether.

The supposed move could happen as early as 2011, and Winfrey is reportedly meeting with programming execs to get the ball rolling on the move. OWN will replace Discovery Health, which can be seen in 70 million homes.

In an update, Finke also says that CBS Television Distribution, which syndicates "Oprah," was blindsided by her story, but there was no other definitive statement since nothing has been made official .

If this is true, what do you think? Will Oprah's viewers stay loyal and follow her to cable?
