I think HBO will earn at least $50M more with Pacific than another season of Rome.

Rome is the type of thing I'll queue up in Netflix, watch once and that's it. Another Band of Brothers mini-series would make me surely subscribe to HBO and definitely buy on DVD as soon as it's available.

The difference being BoB was a hugely successful box set on DVD. It might be up at the top in terms of mini-series sales. They made a ton of money on it, whereas Rome dvd sets probably don't sell all that well.

I just found some numbers on from the FutonCritic. This is from 2003.

Quote:
"Band of Brothers" - 1.4 million
So, it has probably sold double that. And that was when the set was $70 - $90 retail. It's only about $50 now, but HBO probably made double their investment on the show.

I think the main point is a season. This series will probably be 10 episodes long like Band of Brothers and that's it. No worries about having to do it again for anohter season. There is no seasons.

Awesome news, BOB was fantastic with a great cast. I wonder who they're gonna get for this one.

Awesome. Band of Brothers is probably my all-time favorite. I'm just finishing reading Flags Of Our Fathers and hadn't been all that familiar with the Pacific War until that book, even though I'd seen some mostly lame movies on it. I'm really excited about this new production.

I think another reason HBO can justify this over another season of Rome is this: wider appeal.

I think more people will sit through war violence then they will wieners and decapitations a la "Rome". Also, Rome isn't exactly easy to follow. But maybe that's just me. (For the record, Rome rules.)

I just randomly found this info, and figured some might enjoy it...

From http://www.hbo.com/films/news/index.html

Quote:
THE PACIFIC is based on the books "With the Old Breed," by Eugene Sledge, which was hailed by historian Paul Fussell as "one of the finest memoirs to emerge from any war," and "Helmet for My Pillow," by Robert Leckie (recipient of the Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Annual Award), as well as original interviews conducted by the filmmakers and Hugh Ambrose. Continuing the World War II oral history work begun by his father Stephen E. Ambrose (author of the book "Band of Brothers"), Hugh Ambrose serves as a consultant on the miniseries.

The miniseries tracks the intertwined odysseys of three U.S. Marines - Robert Leckie, John Basilone and Eugene Sledge - across the vast canvas of the Pacific. The extraordinary experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day.
I have actually read E.B. Sledge's "With the Old Breed" so I'm glad to see it will be used in this series, and he will be a prominent character.

Heheh, Anthony from Opie and Anthony confronted him last week about this and it was pretty funny. Fallon said he couldn't drive at all, and the driving off stuff was all ADR'd.

Glad you enjoyed it.

I'll have to pick up Leckie's Helmet for my Pillow w/ the gift card I received for my birthday. I've owned his one-volume history since I was a kid - Delivered from Evil.

don't forget to support the "older" brothers...

Damian Lewis stars as complex and offbeat Detective Charlie Crews in NBC's new drama series "Life."

British actor Damian Lewis is best known for his Golden Globe-nominated performance as an American WWII hero in the HBO mini-series "Band of Brothers".

An Australian TV station has a small clip from "The Pacific" located at http://whatsonthetube.net/2009/01/01...n-%E2%80%9909/ .

The clip starts about 3:00 minutes in and shows a clip of the landing at Peleliu.

This is being released this year. Can't wait.

A 10-part mini-series from the creators of "Band of Brothers" telling the intertwined stories of three Marines during America's battle with the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II.

The Pacific is to be based primarily on two memoirs of U.S. Marines: With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge and Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie. The series will tell the stories of the two authors and Marine John Basilone, as the war against the Empire of Japan rages.

Given the literary sources mentioned above, the series will feature well-known battles involving the 1st Marine Division, such as Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa, as well as Basilone's involvement in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

As a person who has lived very near a town near Basilone for a long time, and having a marine grandfather, who died far too young due to smoking, who was injured but courageous in Iwo Jima, this series is a must see for me.

It seems like we've been hearing about this for 5-6 years now.

I'm certainly looking forward to it.

I've never had HBO but I don't know if I'll be able to hold out for a BD release.

I just got through it on Blu-Ray, and I'd say that if it's not the very best, it has to be right up there.

Can't wait for The Pacific--if it's even half as good it'll be worth it.

I don't have HBO, and it will be hard waiting for the DVD set to come out.

The beauty of this series is that it is all about comrades in arms as they face the horror of combat.

This series could be on-going:

Band of Brothers: Korea

Band of Brothers: Vietnam
