Please endulge me. You hate all TV networks? Would you rather have had no Rome whatsoever than two (hopefully good and conclusive) seasons?

While I don't feel as negative toward HBO as you seem to, I will say that I think that I believe HBO has made a couple mistakes in cancelling Deadwood and Rome prematurely. I believe Deadwood had at least another 2 seasons left in it, and who's to say how long Rome could have gone? Both are great shows that had a lot of stories left to tell, and yes, I do know that there are 2 Deadwood movies scheduled, but I'd rather see more episodes than a movie.

HBO isn't looking all that great now with The Sopranos and Rome starting their final seasons, plus arguably their best show ever, Six Feet Under, already is off the air. What will they have left? The Wire and Entourage is basically it for their best programming. If Ice and Fire actually gets on the air(and I am skeptical about it), then I may change my opinion, but for now HBO's original programming isn't looking all that hot.

Thinking about casting - the most challenging part to cast is going to be Tyrion, I think. Obviously, there's a smaller (no pun intended) pool of talent to choose from, and the actor is going to really have to pull off the ability to be dark and complex, flippant and arrogant, yet fully likable and emotionally vulnerable and scarred. It's probably the most challenging part of the series to play, even if he wasn't a dwarf. That added restriction is going to make casting his part a big part of either making or breaking the show.

It's doubtful that HBO canceled either series because they thought there weren't more stories to tell in those series. Most likely it was because of economical reasons: the shows weren't attracting enough viewers to justify the cost of their continued existence. For ROME, their most expensive show that wasn't their most watched show, trying to continue it without the support of their international production parters would've probably been financial folly. With Deadwood, at the least HBO initially offered a reduced final season, which was changed to the movies at the producer's request, to wrap up the series, which is more than most other shows get.

I think that since HBO for a while there had a run of very successful shows that all ran their course, we forget that it is still, ultimately, a network, and subject to ratings as well, although not to the degree that advertiser-based networks are. They're not producing these shows just to produce high-quality content a few people like, they produce them so they have premium content to attract and keep subscribers. If a show they're producing isn't bringing in enough viewers to justify its cost, then they have a responsibility to stop producing that show and try and create a new show that will.

While you're free to cancel your subscription if HBO isn't giving you enough of value anymore, if the only reason you're subscribing to it now is for one show, that seems like a pretty expensive subscription. You'd probably be better off saving your money and buying/renting the DVD set of Rome S2 when it comes out.

However, I feel I should note that buying or renting DVDs of HBO shows does count as "investing in their shit."

It was clear, thats why youre the only one to argue it. Or maybe its cause youre the only one that cared, either way I knew someone would nitpick it but I didnt care to go back an edit my post.

I dont have HBO for one show. I had it for several and the movies. Now everything is dead and the movies are boring. And invest doesnt refer to money alone. Try time as well. I had invested in Carnivale, Deadwood, Rome, etc just to see them cancelled before their time. Rome is an okay cancellation as each season could stand alone ala band of brothers in a way, but the others, nope.

Therefore itd be foolish to invest in their new shows as I know they will be cancelled and people will be back here bitching that their show didnt last. I hope this is enough clarification

Anyone want to list some of their dream casting choices?

I can't think of any off the top of my head, but give me a while and I'll come up with something.

This was a list I came up with at work a few weeks ago. Since I was at work these were just off the top of my head and arent very good. Plus since it was just hypthetical at the time I uncluded people who are currently on other shows. But here it is anyway. The only one I stand behind 100% is Tywin Lannister.

Eddard - Sean Bean
Spoiler:
You'd only need him for about 8 or 9 episodes

Catelyn - Kate Walsh (Addison on Grey's Anatomy)
Cersei - Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet on Lost)
Jaime - Val Kilmer
Tywin - Clancy Brown
Robert - John Goodman
Dany - Kristen Bell
Littlefinger - Robert Knepper (Teabag on Prison Break)
The Hound - Adam Baldwin
The Mountain - The Big Show
Renly - Chris Evans
Margery - Michelle Trachtenberg
Theon - Jason Dohring (Logan on Veronica Mars)
Balon - Christopher Lee
Doran - Cirian Hinds

Didnt even bother trying with the kids cuz I cant really think of any child actors that even come close.

That sucks dude. But dont worry man there is something that happens in A Storm of Swords and is so messed up and crazy awesome that this spoiler will seem so minor in comparison.

I'm also only through the first 2 books and want to offer my thanks as well for Jadow's fucking untagged spoilers and also to Sven for letting me know exactly when it will happen...
Why don't you two at least have the common courtesy to go back and edit your posts to flag them.

Great news about the HBO deal though.

Those are actually some great casting choices, but most likely they'll never happen. I especialy like Jason Dohring as Theon and Adam Baldwin as the Hound.

I'll add:

Jorah Mormont - Tom Sizemore
Maester Aemon - (Old deaf Lawkeeper of the Forum in Rome)
Jeor Mormont - Kenneth Cranham (Pompeii from Rome)
Varys - Ian McNeice (News reader from Rome)
Joffrey - Max Pirkis (Octavian from Rome)
Grand Master Pycelle - Brad Dourif (Doc Cochran from Deadwood)

Lots of people from Rome, now that I'm looking back from my list...

My only real problem is with John Goodman as Robert, he's just too old. Robert is supposed to be in his late 30's to early 40's, I think. I have no idea who I'd replace him with though.

Damn you! If they did that casting Id have to watch as Im a huge Carnivale fand and would love to see Clancy and Knepper in a show again.

Thats great casting though. Hey llama, just go the extra mile and cast Cirian Hinds (or Ray Stevenson, better) as Robert, the more Rome the better

Stevenson could be a great Robert if he fattened up a little bit. I also considered him for the Hound. I'd definately try to find him a role somewhere. The wierd thing is whenever I'm reading A Game of Thrones I always picture him as Rupert from Survivor Pearl Islands. I wonder if he can act

Oh and I love the idea of Ian McNeice as Varys. That was one that was really giving my trouble.

A person I think could also work for Jorah Mormont is Jim Beaver who played Ellsworth on Deadwood. The characters are even similar. Not so attractive older men in love girls way too young for them.

Basically I'd try to find as many spots for ex-cast members of. Carnivale, Rome, and Deadwood as I could.

I'd actually be rather pleased if they followed that philosophy as casting choices. You could do a hell of a lot worse...

sorry, I didn't even think about that. It was so long ago that I read the books, (and he spaces them so far apart) that the spoiler never even crossed my mind.

On another note, I have the first edition hardcover of every one of the books, back to the original silver one. I wonder if they're worth anything.

Fans of this series seem to be pretty hardcore. You could probably get some good money for those books.

I found a great page full of character art. Just know there are a few pictures that would be considered spoilers for those who havent gotten through with A Storm of Swords yet. One is on the page where Cersei's pic is located and the other is on page 6 where the rest of the character portraits start. So I linked to Cersei's pic and page 7 where there are no spoilers. Check out page 6 at your own risk.

I'll bite: Michael J. Anderson (Samson from Carnivale). Admittedly, there aren't too many current "little person" actors who I can think of that have displayed strong acting chops. He's 20 years older than the character, but given Tyrion's appearance I don't think it matters much. Though given the physical nature of the role, Anderson might have problems with it.

When alive, David Rappaport would've been excellent for this.

Actually he's about 30 years older than character and as bad as it sounds he probably wouldnt live long enough to finish the series. Plus like you say I doubt he could handle the battle scenes.

Sadly I cant really think of anyone else who would fit either. Maybe Peter Dinklage. He's a bit younger but not as good an actor from what I've seen. Gonna be one of the biggest challenges for the producers.
