One Punk Under God (Sundance Channel)
Just caught what I think was the first episode of this series. It follows Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker's son Jay as he tries to start a new, down to earth, ministry. I was surprised how compelling this show was. I don't think enjoying it really depends on your religious convictions. There's a sequence where Jay visits the abandoned Heritage USA park that his parents built that's just eerie and bizarre. Jay Bakker actually seems like a pretty good guy who happened to grow up under unusual circumstances and has kept a strong believe in Christianity while still recognizing the corruption within parts of it (including, obviously, his own family). Looks like new episodes are Wednesdays, but last week's still airs a few times during Monday and Tuesday.

I think that was the 2nd episode, which is also the first one I watched.
I never really followed Jim and Tammy, so my background is pretty minimal. Didn't even know there was a Heritage USA, but it was pretty sad to see what it had become.
Being a pretty conservative evangelical, there is little I would disagree with him on that I saw, but it is hard to me to take anyone with a ring through their lip seriously.
I may watch again, but I can see it becoming a bit boring quickly.

First of all, I hate christians. Almost all of them. Secondly, to be a "christian punk" is an oxymoron. I've dedicated a large part of my life to the lifestyle and ethos and this is a slap in the face.

I like what Jay Bakker is doing. He reaches out to everyone with his message that Jesus loves us and salvation is for all of us. He stands up for gay folks and welcomes them with open arms without wanting to change us.

A case could be made that Jesus was punk 'cuz he stood up to the man.

Danggit, man. That was the big question that the scenes from next week were going to show. You spoiler.
I take it you have heard of him prior to this show?

No biggie.
I would guess it was all a lot bigger deal around your neck of the woods. We in the Pacific NW really aren't a relgious society. At least not to the extent your area is.

I've only heard of him because he's got a featured article/interview in this week's Advocate. I figured he was gay-friendly or he wouldn't be doing gay-aimed publicity.
How could you be Tammy Faye Bakker's son and *not* be gay-friendly? Gays pretty much saved her ass and gave her a reason to keep going after her husband's fall.

Ever see The Eyes of Tammy Faye? It's a really well-received documentary about her after the original scandal. Won at Sundance in 2000 or 2001 I think; plenty of other awards. She's got a huge gay following, perhaps for the same reasons as Dolly Parton, for being an outrageous parody with her own defiant style, sort of a female drag queen... She also starred in a talk show for a year or two with the queeny & openly gay JMJ Bullock...

I knew she was on a talk show, but had never hear of the documentary. Thanks.
Where is the gay love for me being an outrageous parody with my own defiant style.
