ER - 5/15 - Season Finale
Man, 30 minutes in and its horrible.

What a yawn fest. Second worst episode ever.
No cliffhanger, guessed as much from the TVguide teaser.
And that Gladiator-Rip-Off music was so annoying.
Luca with a gun to his head was a nice image though. Blood spattering on the camera would have been better.

while I would've preferred an "on location" ep be shown during the season and not as a season finale, I agree with bdshort. I liked it. AND this was the first time that Abby DIDN'T get on my nerves..

Wyle Hints at 'ER' Season Finale Crisis
KAAAWA, Hawaii (AP) - It took a trip to the Congo and a gun pointed at his temple, but Dr. John Carter can finally feel like his own man.
For nine seasons, Noah Wyle's character on "ER'' has been trying to shake his patrician past. All the while, he has endured drug and alcohol addiction, a near-fatal attack on him by a patient and, last month, the death of his grandmother, perhaps his closest supporter.
Now, finally, Carter can feel validation.
"I think there was a sense in the character that his whole life has been as a bit of a dilettante,'' Wyle said in between shooting scenes for the season finale on Oahu, a stand-in for the African setting. "I think as a man he's never really been tested, he's never really put himself into the front lines of anything.''
That changes in "Kisangani,'' the final episode of the season. It airs 10 p.m. EDT Thursday on NBC. Carter ventures to central Africa to join Dr. Luka Kovac (Goran Visnjic) on Alliance de Medecins Internationale, a Doctors Without Borders-type group.
The two physicians find themselves entwined in a political nightmare when they treat a government soldier at their makeshift clinic and the angry machine gun-wielding Mai-Mai rebels arrive in beat-up pickup trucks.
The "ER'' crew is shooting another episode, "The Lost,'' which is the second installment of Season 10, during their 28-day stay in Hawaii. In it,
Wyle calls the Hawaii-filmed drama a highlight of his time on the series. And he says Carter's overseas service will have quite an impact on a character whose development makes the actor "ecstatic.''
"I think when I come back next season, he'll be a very different guy,'' Wyle said.
Wyle never expected to reach a 10th season when he joined the show, playing a third-year medical student.
"I was thinking in terms of months, sort of, not years and really not decades,'' said Wyle, 31. His contract, like Visnjic's, is up after next year. Both say they're considering staying on for an 11th season. Regardless, NBC has announced the show will air at least through 2006.
"With any long-term relationship, and this has certainly been the longest of my life, you fall in love and out of love, you have your ups and downs,'' Wyle said. "But shows like this, opportunities like this, come around really once in a lifetime, so it didn't take very long for me to realize where I was at was pretty great.''
Visnjic, on a brief shooting break under a corrugated tin-roofed shack near a pile of smoking coals, had similar praise.
"I can't be anything else but happy,'' he said. "This is like, for an actor, it's something so special. You don't get this stuff every day.''
Like Wyle, Visnjic sees the episodes as a turning point for his character, a doctor who faced a tumultuous season in which he's blamed for a patient's death, nearly kills a medical student in a car crash, and turns to a life of alcohol and prostitutes.
"This is definitely one of the big events in Luca's life,'' Visnjic said.
It's not the first time "ER'' has filmed in Hawaii. An episode last May, chronicling Dr. Mark Greene's final days before succumbing to a brain tumor, was also shot on Oahu.
Critics have sometimes had disparaging reviews of episodes set outside the walls of County General. But Wyle, like producer Chris Chulack, says viewers will be "pleasantly surprised'' with this foray to Africa.
And for Wyle's character, who finally stands at the emergency room nucleus after the staggered departures of leading men George Clooney, Anthony Edwards and Eriq La Salle, it's a defining moment.

Boring.....
I truthfully have no interest in the rest of the
world, when we have our own people in need.
If we can not keep our own house clean,
what chance do we have with helping the
rest of the world.
The ep with Benton in Laverne?? was a far better ep.
And that was not that great of an ep.
This show is ER..... based in Cook county.
I hope they keep it there for now on.
If not, maybe its time to call it quits in Cook county.

I know most ER fans are pretty harsh on the road show episodes and they usually do suck. But I'm kind of surprised the reaction to this one is so negative. IMO this was well done and easily one of the better episodes in this rather disappointing season.

I do not like road shows. This episode was not bad, but it wasn't the ER that people tune in to watch.
On a bright note, I really enjoyed an episode without Abby's brother!!

I thought it was a fairly good episode myself... when you remove all the Abby crap, it can't go anywhere but up.
I loved hearing the woman from Montreal speak french, it's probably the first time ever I see that accent on american tv.

Man, i thought this was Noah Wyle's last season so I kept waiting from him to stay overseas and not come back. Then I thought he was going to get shot.
But he comes back to chicago. then I thought the cab would crash. then I thought there would be a burglar in the apartment. Then I thought that he would just keel over and die.

I was expecting the worst, but I found it very good: It was quite restrained, the subtitles were used judiciously (hell, when's the last time an American show or movie had people speaking a foreign language, especially Freedom?) (rhetorical; no need to provide examples)), the obligatory romance didn't happen, the political and social chaos was not whitewashed, albeit necessarily simplified.
The episode left me with a feeling of futility about the circumstances in some parts of the world. What the volunteers of Doctors Without Borders (the real-life coalition) do is commendable, to say the least, but it seems akin to putting a bandaid on an exsanguinating amputation. The sociopolitical landscape must first be ordered and fundamental infrastructure, such as equipped hospitals, schools, and widespread water-drilling, installed; pharmaceutical companies, who are spending time worrying about the trivialities of Westerners (Botox, Viagra,...) should step in and provide basic lifesaving medicines from decades ago that we all take for granted.
The episode left me with a feeling of futility about the circumstances in some parts of the world. i was also surprised at all the negative comments here....i really liked the episode, and this coming from a long-time viewer who had all but written off the show this year....I thought it was a terrible year, but this was a great episode. I really enjoyed it.

This episode gave me chills in the 2nd half once all hell breaks loose. The amount of courage these doctors show under these conditions is just insane. Working out there has to internally change the way you see the world, and how you relate to it. I'd say it'd be a life-altering experience.
Perhaps it was Carter's naivete at work when he kept trying to keep that one guy alive while the jaded doctor was content to let the guy die after the power went out, but Carter kept doing what he was trained to do, and just the effort in trying to keep a man alive is what saved his own life days later. Karma, my man.
This episode was Carter's wake-up call. It'll make him truly prioritize the important stuff from the superfluous stuff in his life.

Major letdown. At least no Sally Field.
As for Carter's needle mishap last week, I wish I had a dollar for every subplot this show started than ignored. Whatever happened to the doctor who Elizabeth thought was killing her patients? Noah Wylie (and habit) is the only thing that keeps me coming back every week.

I don't get all the negativity either. I feel the same as AJP, this was much better than the rest of the season.
I did find it ironic that the week before, Carter was getting it for not plowing through and getting patients out the door from Romano, and in the finale, as Kovach says "when was the last time you treated a couple hundred patients in one afternoon?" or something to that extent.
