Enterprise 05/14/03

Episode Title: 'First Flight'

Spoiler:
While Enterprise is investigating what appears to be a dark matter nebula, Archer receives news that A.G. Robinson, his old rival in the early days of the NX test program, has died. During a shuttlepod mission into the dark matter phenomenon, Archer reminisces to T'Pol about the time he and Robinson were pilots competing for the honor of being the first to break the Warp 2 barrier.

Written By: Chris Black & John Shiban
Directed By: LeVar Burton

Episode Title: 'Bounty'

Spoiler:
A Tellarite bounty hunter captures Archer intending to turn him over to the Klingons for a substantial reward. Meanwhile, T'Pol is infected with an alien pathogen that unleashes her primal Vulcan urges.

Story By: Rick Berman & Brannon Braga
Teleplay By: Hans Tobeason and Mike Sussman & Phyllis Strong
Directed By: Roxann Dawson

Former Trek actors have now found a home: directing Enterprise episodes!

Other than the "B" plot from the second episode, tonight's episodes have some possibilities.

Thanks for the reminder that there are two episodes tonight. I'll make sure I have a fresh videotape loaded.

the First Flight was a pretty interesting episode. Showing a liitle bit more of how the life is in the 22nd century. Is T'Pol starting to melt a little ?

I'm looking forward to "First Flight". I just hope that the B&B written "Bounty" is decent.

The initial buzz is UPN is running scared from Smallville and might very well move Enterprise to Buffy's Tuesday spot next season.

Link

I guess I'm not too shocked.

I don't know about you but Jolene Blalock running around in her underwear for almost an hour has my complete & total interest.

I don't watch Trek for T&A, that's what porn is for. and I prefer natural over silicone

Certainly raises the question what anybody really views for Enterprise for. If there has been one constant through the past two incarnations of Trek....it's T&A....but no matter...my comments were laced with sarcasm that clearly did not get through...

Exactly. Enterprise is about N'ipal and Voyager was about 38 of Double Dee. What we need to do is go back to the innocent, non-sexual purity of the original Star Trek, where we never saw a mini-skirted crew-babe and the Captain did not "hook up" with a half-naked alien chick every episode. Oh, wait...

true that. And I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that. Still, for all it's faults Next Gen was in many ways a thoughtful show about idealism & hope while DS9 was a show about politics & faith. Looking at Voyager & Enterprise no such through line is evident, at least to me and when I talk to other people who watch the show more regularly than I the first thing I hear is usually how stupid the last episode was and how hot Jolene Blalock or Linda Park looked.

I've used the same line about TOS having lots of skin. there were episodes that must have really pushed the limits of what the tv executives would allow back then
but I don't remember an episode focusing on it like B&B do
I just hate seeing an idea that has so much potential being used to help B&B get a woody
now if they had linda park going through pon far I wouldn't be complaining. I'd be a hypocrite, but not complaining

Well, I certainly agree with all the talk above. It just seems to me Trek ratings in general have gone to crap ever since they cranked up all the sex.

TOS may of had sexy stuff, but didn't bash you over the head with it like B&B. I read somewhere (and I can't remember where) that T'Pol would be getting a new suit next season. I certainly hope that means one more suited for a Vulcan (for Trek's sake only ).

As to the episodes: the first one was interesting, if slow. It's fun to see more history of warp speed development, because this kind of stuff was what the series was supposed to be about to begin with! nevermind the fact they didn't even bother to make them look younger. It sounded like the test run could've been 10 years in the past.

The second one: the less said about Pon Farr, the better. It was nice to see a Tellerite and great to see the Klingon sub-plot brought up again.

Wouldn't it be awesome if Archer is singlehandedly responsible for the aggression between Starfleet and the Klingons in the future?

I couldn't agree more. I haven't seen the second episode yet, but I actually enjoyed "First Flight". I thought it was well written and gave us what I thought the show was intended to give us - an accounting of how we got into space exploration. Now they have to deal more directly with how the Federation is formed, and the Klingon conflict.

Maybe, just maybe, there is hope for this show.

I actually enjoyed both episodes. I like the flashback episode although I find it puzzling that they can develop the ability to go from Warp 2 to Warp 5 in the span it takes Archer to move up one grade in rank.

As for the 2nd episode, great to finally see a Tellaritte - I haven't seen one since TOS although I would have preferred to see them look a little more pig-like. I liked what they said about them - "they like to argue." As for T'Pol, I am not ashamed to At least they used her T&A in the context of an actual storyline (and the secret of Pon Farr remains a mystery although you would think humans would be able to convince Vulcans to let them look at a Vulcan anatomy textbook to figure out how they mate ).

Please explain to me why every single time a Vulcan gets the Pon F'arr, no one will - and I quote - "give them the remedy?" I mean - what is so awful about letting a Vulcan mate?

What a weird mixed message from that episode. N'Pol writhing around on the floor, all sweaty and speaking in tongues, BEGGING to be ****ed - and no one will just do the obvious thing and give her the ****ing she needs? Is sexuality really that scary?

And the about-face with Phlox concerning the shyness of D'Nobulan males - BALONEY! In virtually every other episode involving alien mating practices, Phlox has been right there with his pedophile Joker smile, insinuating kinky, kinky things. Now to serve this wretched B-plotline, we get him acting all demure and bashful? BALONEY!

Yes, it is, and I would appreciate it if you wouldn't mention it so openly in a public forum!

Naaaaa.

This is gonna shock everyone – I liked “First Flight.” Unfortunately it was boring. I was afraid going in that I would have to grit my teeth at Blalock’s piss-poor acting (I’m developing a real dislike for her), but I was pleasantly surprised.

I liked (and didn’t) the cranky Vulcan Overseers checking out every little step us backwards Neanderthal humans make in the name of progress. If it was up to them, we’d still be banging rocks together to make fire.

But it’s hard to keep from comparing this one with just about every movie that deals with breaking the sound barrier.

How did Archer exhibit big brass ones necessary to steal the beta ship? He’s never had them since. And a great fight scene. You don’t see that much on this show. Gawd, I miss the Kirk Beating The Crap Outta Everybody days.

Only caught the beginning of “Bounty.”

About T&A and Trek: at least when TOS showed skin, it was decent to look at. Aside from the boobs, Jeri Ryan is not much in the looks department. And Blalock is just butt ugly. That’s JMO, but you can’t deny that she’s developed a pronounced slump-shouldered top-heavy posture that is just painful to watch.

(Keep in mind that I think that boobs is the greatest gift that God has bestowed on man.)

I think since it was a new engine design for a Warp 5 engine, they were going slow and each test was trying to reach a new high, while keeping a stable warp field.

It took Riker 16 years to go from Commander to Captain.

That's plenty of time to go from Warp 2-3 to Warp 5

Not Kirk though. Kirk managed to make Captain by 34 and still have time to break Wilt Chamberlain's record for most scores in the Alpha Quadrant.
