Wow, my Tivo did something cool today....
it was on a channel that was airing an episode of Cops. It was about 7 minutes into the show. I pushed record, expecting it to record where I started it. Apparently since the channel was on and I hadn't changed it when I turned on the TV, it used the show in the buffer memory and gave me those extra 7 minutes that I had missed. That's pretty cool! I've had this thing for over 2 years now, and it still amazes me!

Yeah it'll do that, but it has to record it in best quality, since it's in the live buffer.
Hell, you could have waited 29 minutes in and it still would have recorded it . Isn't it great?

I just got a "DVR" from TimeWarner, they just came out with them in my area.
I was looking at a Tivo, but decided on the "DVR" from Timewarner instead.
It's $4.95 a month. And the box replaces the digital cable box instead so no extra charge for the box.
Just got it yesterday and it amazes me! Don't know what is worse/better/different/same than Tivo but.....:
Pause/rewind/etc Live TV
Record up to 50 hours
Picture in Picture (even if your tv doesn't have it)
Will record the show you are watching UP TO an HOUR previous as long as you haven't changed the channel
Record TWO shows at ONCE (WOW! does Tivo do this???)
I can watch Fox while recording NBC and CBS at the same time!
well worth the $4.95/month for me. No more "searching rewind/fast forward" through different tapes looking for the specific show I recorded a week ago and "forgot" which tape it was on.

I don't know much about those DVR deals. Can you dump the shows to videotape?

Keep us up to date on how it works out for you.
I've read this review which found a lot of big problems with the unit:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...r.nyroc.rr.com
Plus it seems like the software is nowhere near as advanced as current TiVo software.

Other than that no fancy "suggestions or recommendations" or anything. And for $4.95 (actually first two months are FREE) I have nothing to complain about.
And if they update the box or upgrade the software I'll just stop by and switch my box for no charge. I did this when they got "smaller" boxes last round of upgrades.
I'll check out the website and see if mine has the same bugs or not. thanks

Yup, Tivo will go back and grab up to a half hour of any show you've been watching if you press record in the middle. I'm trying to remember when they added this. 2.0, perhaps? It's been available for a while.
It's been so long since I used a standalone that I forget about the whole "best/medium/low" quality thing...I love the DirecTivo because everything is at perfect quality. (And yes, it records two programs at once, and you can watch a third as it does this.)
