MTV VMAs film look

This is totally bizarre. If I didn't know that this is live, I would swear that this was shot on film. Anyone know the technology and hardware behind this?

well, I've always been a fan of deinterlacing video for a film-like look in post production. But this VMAs is a lot better and closer to film look than anything I've seen with deinterlacing. Plus it is live and instant, maybe with a little delay.

I had to turn it off just now. Not only did the content suck, but the "look" to it was driving me nuts. Not like film at all, just like video but not at 24 frames per second--a little slower, maybe, if that's possible. I don't know. I'm not a technical guy.

Eh, if I read online that something cool happened (which I doubt, from looking at the presenters/performers lineup), I'll just catch it during one of the next 8,572 repeats MTV will have between now and Spring Break.

I am glad that I am not the only one who noticed this.

Weird.

Ok, I found out. It is shot on 24p (progressive) digital format. There is article at http://www.tvinsite.com/
Just do a search for MTV VMA or MTV 24p digital

You may have to register (free) to read it.

I tried watching but it seems this year's VMAs was...rehearsed. Jimmy Fallon seemed off to me, like he wasnt sure if he should say certain things. I saw Triumph the comic insult dog, and that made me laugh when Eminem wouldnt let him talk to him. Then I saw what Christina "I bought myself a new pair" Aguelara. was wearing and just had to go *click*

I'm catching the repeat showing right now. This is just too weird a look to watch. I saw Springsteen, Britney and Jackson, that's enough for me.

I only saw that small part. She looked rather "out of her mind."

But from the neck down! Nice.

Gee - it was almost like I was watching the VMA's on streaming video. Everyone was moving slowly, like they were immersed in a vat of syrup, and there were all those blipvert freezes and horizontal "static" lines.

Ah - but didn't you see the practical application of this wretched new technology?

That's right. It helped to mask the fact that more than 50% of the performers were LIP-SYNCHING.

If only Axl had been so wise. Dude, your career is over if you can't run across the stage just the one time and not be able to catch your breath to sing the next note. Release "Chinese Democracy" now and cut your losses. And I'll be the first to say it: white men should never - under any circumstances!! - wear dreadlocks. Especially if you're red-haired. And especially if those dreadlocks are mostly a synthetic wig.

I think its because she knew she looked very whorish and had to hand the moonman to Eminem. She looked like she was going to dorp it for fear he was going slap her silly.

I'm sitting here reading the posts about the 'film look' on the VMA's and I'm thinking, "they must be exaggerating. It can't be that big of a deal." So I flip on the repeat to check it out...

OH MY GOD.

Heh Heh...I turn the show on...and immediately start yelling...what the heck is this???? My first thought was 24progressive.

Bizzare psychological effect! I kept pointing to the screen and telling my girlfriend..." this is strange shi@!!!!

Oh God...please tell me this is not the future of TV broadcasts!!!

Did anyone see Kelly from American Idol trying to hug Avril Lavigne? Avril made it a point to avoid her and take her award. That was a priceless moment.

And did anyone else hear the person screaming "You suck!" when the Olsen Twins were up there?

That was really irritating. Even the rappers were lip synching, what's up with that? Actually, it was like a pseudo lip synch because you could hear the recorded track AND the person rapping at times. Horrible.

My brother hated the look. I did too, it was really distracting.

I also thought it sucked, along with the show itself.

The look of the show bugged the hell out of my wife (who thought the show didn't look live because of it). I thought it looked kind of cool, but didn't really notice it until she pointed it out. Most of the performers were so bad that neither one of us were paying much attention to anything but a couple of the presenters.
