Frayed wire on ipad air -- did it damage the ipad?

I noticed a frayed wire on my ipad aire 1 charger but was slow to replace it, not knowing the damage it could cause. when I did, I downloaded an app to tell me the battery life. At the time. I replaced the cord, it was 60% bad and has progressively gotten worse until now it is over 90%. I found someone that will replace the battery, but was wondering if anyone knows if possibly there could be other damage. It seems to work OK, except for the battery life (and sometimes slow internet access). Maybe I should just buy a new one? It's a $100 to replace the battery and I want to make sure it's worth it. TIA

BTW, I did buy an official Apple charger cord as well. But at the 99cents only store, I did see that they had charger cords for a buck. The cashier and the person buying them said they were good cords, but I didn't understand why he was buying 5 or 6, unless they didn't last or he was a reseller. Are they any good, or is there a risk of damaging your device if you use them.

The Apple MFi certification cost is $4 per Lightning cable, so if a cable is selling for less than $4, it likely hasn't undergone certification to adhere to Apple's specifications and safety guidelines, etc. I wouldn't trust cheap cables like that for anything.

Yeah, it's on sale right now. Normal price $8, so they're selling it at a loss.

Good price if you want a certified cable. Only available in 3' length though.
