Set this up today. It works! Here are a couple of tips: if you have to start over like I did, you'll need to re-name the role or you'll get a error the next time you go through the steps. I added a 1 to the end of the word "execution" and it worked. I don't recall which step it was, but you'll know what I mean as you go through the steps. Also, at one point you'll have to set your region to either Virginia or Ireland to make the steps work. If you're in the U.S., of course you'll pick Virginia, but this means if you ask Alexa to ask Google for a weather update, she'll give you the weather for Virginia instead of your local weather. Not really an issue because most likely you'd just ask Alexa for a weather update. One annoying thing when you ask Alexa to ask Google for an answer is she'll sometimes spell out a long web address after her response. She doesn't always do it, but I noticed she'll sometimes mention the address for a video after her answer.

Ask this: "Alexa, are you part of Skynet?"

Re: Amazon Echo

I picked one up as well. Even though it's refurbished, I'll try it out to use with my Alexa/Dot.

Can you use this as a speaker for your laptop?

Re: Amazon Echo

Cool I was just looking into bluetooth speakers because my laptop speakers are under powered. Also had my eye on the echo for a bit now so I kill two birds with one stone.

Re: Amazon Echo

I do have the Echo and Dot, and I'll tell you right now the Echo sounds fairly good while the Dot does not. The Dot isn't bad, it just doesn't have a lot of range due to its size. I'll add that I also have a Heos 1 speaker which I got free when I bought my Denon receiver. That Bluetooth/wireless speaker sounds outstanding next to the Echo. I do tend to use the Echo a little more to listen to Prime music, but if you're going to connect your laptop to a wireless speaker, you may want to look into a Heos or Sonos.

Re: Amazon Echo

I agree. Instead of getting an Echo, I would recommend getting the Dot and a separate Bluetooth speaker of your choice. The combination would sound better and may be cheaper, depending on what speaker you get. The speaker can also be paired to the Dot, so you can get decent sound out of it too.

Re: Amazon Echo

The same people who started Woot. Like Woot of old, they sell one item a day. I picked up the Phillips kit last time. Works very well so far.

Re: Amazon Echo

Yeah, leave it to Amazon to "invent" and stuff down our throats a $200 gadget that does something so banal yet so "important."

Amazon = conspicious consumption at its finest. Bravo to all those greedy, wasteful capitalists!

Re: Amazon Echo

Or you can just choose not to buy it, like me. It's not like Amazon hasn't introduced products in the past that have failed because few people wanted or "needed" it, like their ill-fated phone for example. I'm guessing that this won't be a success for them like the Echo was. Vote with your wallet.

Re: Amazon Echo

zyzzle said it was being forced down his throat, so I assume he has some kind of auto-deduct going on his Amazon account when they introduce new devices.

Re: Amazon Echo

That is seriously the worst mass-market consumer electronic product I've seen in a long time.

Maybe it'll work out as well as the Fire Phone.

Forget Fire Phone, I think we may be entering ESPN Phone territory.

Re: Amazon Echo

I was pretty impressed with Alexa today. I wanted to hear Tori Amos' cover of Slayer's "Raining Blood", but mistakenly asked her to play "Reign in Blood" (the name of the Slayer album that the song originally appeared on). Alexa responded with "I can't find the album "Reign in Blood" by Tori Amos", I realized my error and asked her to play "Raining Blood" by Tori Amos and it worked. Very cool that it could differentiate between two titles that sound very similar (and it wasn't like I was over enunciating all the words, I was just saying them clearly but naturally).
