Re: Windows 9+1 Thread

So reports that there will be no IE12, MS releasing a whole new basic browser with new engine, so IE11 will sitll come with Win10? The new browser seems like a good idea; I've always complained how complicated updating IE is, like it should be just downloading IE11.0.2.exe, etc.

I was surprised there'd be a Windows Media Player 14 - I always thought MS would drop WMP before IE.

More about the Windows 10 revamped browser 'Spartan'

http://www.theverge.com/2015/1/8/751...artan-features

Quote:
Microsoft is planning to radically overhaul its web browser in Windows 10. Sources familiar with the company’s Windows plans tell The Verge that the new browser, codenamed Spartan, will include a host of new features not found in rival browsers. Chief among the plans for Spartan is new inking support that allows Windows 10 users to annotate a web page with a stylus and send the notes and annotations to a friend or colleague. The web note service will be powered by Microsoft’s OneDrive cloud storage, meaning notes will be stored on a copy of a web page that can be accessed by any browser across multiple platforms. As annotations are shared, multiple users can doodle on a web page and share edits and annotations between groups.

A second major feature for Spartan will be the integration of Microsoft’s Cortana digital assistant. Microsoft is planning to use Cortana to surface information on flights, hotel bookings, package tracking, and other data within the traditional address bar. If you use Cortana to track a particular flight and start to search for "American Airlines" in the browser address bar, it will automatically display tracked flights and allow Spartan users to view the status of the flight directly. It’s a subtle addition, but you’ll also be able to access Cortana search directly from the new tab interface in Spartan. Cortana integration in the Spartan browser is planned to replace every instance of the existing Bing methods in Internet Explorer.

Other features include a new way to group tabs together to declutter the occasionally messy interface of multiple browser tabs. Spartan will allow users to group tabs however they want, making it easier, for example, to split up personal tabs from work ones. Microsoft also originally planned to allow Spartan to support custom themes, but we understand the company has dropped this for the final new browser in Windows 10. Such support may arrive in future updates.

Re: Windows 9+1 Thread

So 'Spartan' will use plug-ins like other browsers and not active-x?

But users can't instlal it on Win 7 and 8?

Re: Windows 9+1 Thread

Windows 10 is FREE for owners of Windows 7 for the first year after release. I imagine the same applies to owners of Windows 8 and 8.1.

Terry Myerson just announced on stage that, for the first year after Windows 10 launches, any device running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to upgrade to the latest version of MIcrosoft's OS — for free. How exactly this program will work isn't clear just yet — it'll certainly be subject to some hardware requirements, particularly for older machines running Windows 7.

Trying to hear the presentation, but it's in buffer hell. So I guess Windows 10 now comes with Siri, er the Microsoft version of it, called Cortana.

Re: Windows 9+1 Thread

So far everything is what was rumored; a lot of unification of the platform across PC/Tablet/Phone and universal apps like Office. Cortana. Spartan browser looks pretty neat.

Yeah. Seems like they're steering away from VR specifically, and focusing on an augmented experience. Interesting, but... time will tell if it takes off.

Re: Windows 9+1 Thread

So they will stick with the Spartan codename. Sounds good.

I just have Windows Vista at home. But it probably can't run win10 anyway. And I guess there's not a reason to wait to buy a PC w/ Windows 10 already installed.

Q: What's going to happen after the first year of free updates to Windows 10?

A: We haven't worked out the details. The goal is to get customers to upgrade to Windows 10.

I hope I get free upgrades to 10 for the dozen copies of Windows 7 (from TechNet) that I've been evaluating since 2009.

That's just the new "full screen" mode of the start menu. It will basically replace the (soon to be defunct) start screen. It will pop up when you click the start button, just as the old start menu always did. The task bar will still be visible, and you will be able to easily dismiss the menu. And, of course, you will be able to choose between this mode and the one that Dan posted, which more closely resembles the old Win 7 start menu. It may even be that, when your PC is not in tablet mode, it automatically uses the smaller menu.

From Windows.com:

Free Upgrade Offer
Great news! We will offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for qualified new or existing Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that upgrade in the first year!* And even better: once a qualified Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it up to date for the supported lifetime of the device, keeping it more secure, and introducing new features and functionality over time for no additional charge. Sign up with your email today, and we will send you more information about Windows 10 and the upgrade offer in the coming months.

*It is our intent that most of these devices will qualify, but some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. ISP fees may apply. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise outside of this offer. We will be sharing more information and additional offer terms in coming months
Looks like I will qualify for the free upgrade - I have licensed versions from TechNet for Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Home Premium.

I did install Windows 7 Enterprise on my brother-in-law's laptop, so the poor bastard will have to buy his own copy of Windows 10

This is my understanding as well. I actually haven't even touched the previous builds of Windows 10 (has anyone here?) but I know that that sort of 'fluidity' is something they've been trying to perfect with Win 10.

Good find! I think I'm good as well. My computers all have TechNet licenses of Windows 8, except for my original Surface Pro, which uses whatever license it came with. That was the only one I was expecting to be able to update for free, so I'm happy.

One thing that many people on other sites keep missing is this part of the announcement:
Quote:

That is HUGE.
