The president of Microsoft France may have inadvertently revealed that Windows 9 will be announced on Sept 30.

^ that actually happened, but it's only for OEMs, and it's not free... Just cheaper.

It's actually a little unclear how much Windows 8.1 with Bing costs OEMs. MS mentions Windows being free for tablets under 9" in their announcement for Windows 8.1 with Bing:
http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwin...ndows-devices/

HP recently announced the Stream 7 & 8, which are low-cost tablets that come with Windows 8.1 with Bing, so this may be the free version of Windows MS was talking about:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8578/h...ps-and-tablets

For larger screens, Windows 8.1 with Bing possible costs some money, but is still plenty cheap. MS has recently angled it as competition for Chromebooks:

It's Windows 10.
They just outright skipped 9.

Yes. Yes it is.
Everything they're talking about is for business users. Makes sense.

That is awesome!

They're saying it's like going from a Prius to a Tesla. You don't have to relearn how to drive, but it's just better.

Yay Start Menu! Looking forward to the positives of Win 8 making its way in there like the search features. And looks like all the rumored stuff is showing up... multiple desktops.

A developer preview will be released tomorrow. The finished version will ship "later in the year" in 2015.

Edit: They've clarified that it will be released "after the Build conference, mid next year".

re: Windows 9+1 Thread

Copying from The Verge stream...

Q: Any incentive for Windows 7 and Windows XP users to upgrade?

A: "We want to talk about the overall product family." No news on upgrade pricing, etc

Q: Can you talk about the name? Seems weird going from Windows 8 to Windows 10.

A: This product, when you see the product in your fullness I think you'll agree with us that it's a more appropriate name.

Q: You mentioned screens ranging from 4 inches to 80 inches. Is Windows 10 the next version of the phone operating system too?

A: Yes.

Hope font scaling works better, given that high resolution/DPI displays are becoming more common.

Vast majority of existing devices will be upgradeable, says Belfiore.

re: Windows 9+1 Thread

According to Mary Jo Foley over at ZDNet...
"First, of course, is the name. Microsoft is calling its next Windows release "Windows 10," not Windows 9, as many had expected. The reason? It's going to be the last major version of Windows and Microsoft wanted to signify it will be a big and cross-platform release."
