Re: The Apple Thread

Quick iOS question (don't think worth a separate thread).

I end up texting the same three people about 90% of the time. Two of them have very similar names and thus I'm regularly texting the wrong one!! I even ruined a surprise with one.

iOS sorts your IM contacts by recent texting so the two are always together and on top. Is there any way to move them and lock them in? So I'd have to scroll down and thus be more purposeful? I changed the name on one in contacts, but then that of course caused issue with Siri and calls and such. Plus I'd rather separate them....lol just to be sure.

Re: The Apple Thread

Not that I know of. How about making duplicate contact records for each with more distinct names for the texting version for a little bit of help?

Re: The Apple Thread

Are they family members? You could add "Son" or "Daughter" or "Wife" or Mistress" to the beginning of their names to keep from clicking the wrong one.

I also have a weird iOS (or maybe just Outlook) issue. For some damn reason, I don't get notifications when I get new email to my live.com account... EXCEPT... the junk folder. So if it goes straight to my live.com junk folder, I get a notification. If it goes to my live.com Inbox, I don't get anything at all until I open Outlook, and it pulls all the email in. I've triple-checked all of my settings and I can't seem to figure it out. My Gmail.com and Hotmail.com notifications come in Outlook just fine.

(I don't use the default Mail app because I think it sucks even worse, sorry.)

You can't lock the order of Recents, but you can lock the order of Favorites. Just enable Favorites and sort them how you want:

Re: The Apple Thread

I think I asked this before, but forgot...is there a setting on iPhone or iTunes on phone so I don't have to keep typing my password to buy songs? I think I can do it if I keep passcode on, but I don't want it on.

Re: The Apple Thread

Can't you just turn on Touch ID for purchases? That should work, unless Apple won't allow it.

Wait, you don't have your iPhone locked with a passcode? That's dangerous.

I got my MIL to use Touch ID to lock her phone. Previously, she didn't want to lock it with a passcode, but Touch ID is so seamless that she doesn't mind that it's enabled, and actually likes that others can't just pick up and start using her phone.

Anyway, without Touch ID, you can set it so iTunes only asks every 15 minutes for a passcode for purchases, but you can't remove it completely:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204030

So if you're buying songs, buy them in bulk.

It's extremely dangerous to use your phone without a passcode, both because anyone who grabs it has full access to your phone, but also a passcode is required for any encryption.

Still waiting for them to appear at our local Apple store...

There were a couple of good articles related to AirPods in the last few days:
The Curious State of Apple Product Pricing - Underpricing AirPods

John Kirk's excellent comment right bellow this Philip Elmer-DeWitt article on the AirPods pricing

Apple quietly announced via press release this morning that it would not be replacing any of its top-end iPads, just its two-year-old midrange iPad Air 2. The company's new mainstream 9.7-inch tablet, called simply "iPad," includes an Apple A9 SoC (not an A9X), but its most exciting feature is its starting price of $329, $70 less than the previous starting price of the Air 2. The tablet will be available to order starting March 24 and will begin shipping next week.

At that price, it actually appears that you take a step back from the design used for the Air 2 and the 9.7-inch iPad Pro. At 1.03 pounds (469g) and 0.29-inches (7.5mm) thick, the tablet is actually almost identical in size to the original iPad Air, not the Air 2. Hopefully this doesn't mean that the screen or any other aspect of the tablet is also taking a step backward, but we'll have to wait to get one in our hands to know for sure.

The tablet's other key specs include the same 9.7-inch 2048×1536 screen as previous iPads of this size, an 8MP rear camera with no flash, TouchID, and a headphone jack. 32GB and 128GB capacities are available in both Wi-Fi and cellular configurations; 32GB models cost $329 for Wi-Fi and $459 for cellular, while 128GB models run $429 and $559 respectively. Space grey, silver, and gold colors are all offered, but no rose gold.
It's lacking courage, but the price is great.

Re: The Apple Thread

Every time a new iPad is announced, I start to wonder if I could use one. But they're no different than my phone for the most part, so I have yet to buy one. And the kids have a cheap Kindle with works just fine for them.

Mostly an updated air 2. Probably priced to keep android competition off the market in the Mid range

Re: The Apple Thread

I have to check out how the non-laminated glass thing affects the iPad experience. I'm still on a 3 (last version to use the 30-pin connector) and the battery life on it is great but it is getting a little slow on me. If it's not that much of a difference usage wise, $429 for a 128 wifi only is a no brainer upgrade.

Re: The Apple Thread

Apple, like Intel, has been stagnating (AKA: "resting on their laurels") for quite some time now.

The reason? Lack of competition, greed, and being cavalier. Bah...

Poppycock!, will be their predictible response to this, of course..

Re: The Apple Thread

I was thinking about getting my first ipad and was waiting on this announcement but that's disappointing.

I was hoping for that rumored bezel free version, but like all things Apple, they're a few years late on everything.

They've just sucked ass since Cook took over.

Re: The Apple Thread

Regarding the Apple AirPods....

Well i found two pairs on craigslist and of course over paid. They really work great. I think they sound a little better than the ear buds but probably my imagination. They are very comfortable and haven't fallen out yet. Tapping works great to activate SIRI and people haven't noticed if I'm on the phone, CarPlay or these so thats a bonus

Wife didn't want them so now I'm stuck with an extra pair..off to craigslist...lol

Re: The Apple Thread

It's probably not your imagination, since I believe the airpods are designed with more bass in mind.
