Re: The Apple Thread

I play youtube videos through Safari.

I deleted the youtube app a while back because it was buggy and crashing constantly.

The only thing I miss when viewing YouTube vids on iOS Safari is having a real full screen view.

Re: The Apple Thread

My ipod broke recently and cannot be fixed, so I was looking into getting the 6th gen ipod touch. I dont have a smartphone, and don't have a need for one. or a contract phone bill. The ipod touch looks like a smartphone without the phone, and I would enjoy some of the features it offers. I was just wondering if anyone here had it, and what they thought about it, pros/cons?

Re: The Apple Thread

do you guys jail break your devices? i want to be able to record my screen for my youtube channel and evidently Apple doesn't want you to do that so you have to jail break then download apps to do it. Recording you screen doesn't seem like a big deal on android. I have 9.2 ios, can it be jail broken? I am kind of scared to do it but it is something lots of folks do so it can't be too hard...right?

There's actually a few ways to do it without jailbreaking. Apple offers screen recording if you connect an iOS device to a Mac. A third party application called Reflector2 will record via AirPlay to a PC. And you could also use a video capture device with it, similar to how some capture game console video:

I don't specifically have the 6th gen, but I have used older iPod Touchs before, and they're great as long as you don't need cell phone, mobile data, or GPS capabilities. They'd certainly offer a lot more over your iPod Classic (I assume).

However, do you have a smartphone? I personally use my smartphone for everything I'd use an iPod Touch for, plus being able to place calls, send texts, view data on the go, and use GPS for maps and directions. If you don't have a smartphone, I'd recommend getting one and using that over an iPod Touch, provided you can afford the (relatively cheap) cell phone plans these days.

Re: The Apple Thread

I just got google fiber and now have wifi in my house, I would like some of the features(such as having the camera, access to apps, things like that), as well as replacing my ipod nano. I was thinking of the 64gb model. I still use a pay as you go flip phone, buying minutes as I need them works better for me than having a $60-80 phone bill every month.

Reflector 2 can cast to a Windows PC using Airplay, then record:

T-Mobile has unlimited text and web with 100 mins/month for $30 a month. You can bump it to unlimited talk as well for $5 more:
https://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/other-prepaid-plans

Google's Project Fi could be potentially even cheaper, since they refund unused data, but only works on Nexus devices:
https://fi.google.com/about/plan/

Republic Wireless has a similar "refund unused data" plan, but with Moto smartphones:
https://republicwireless.com/plans/

FreedomPop has a free plan that's 500 MB data, 200 Minutes, and 500 Texts per month. You can buy an iPhone 5 from them for $229, although it has only 16GB of space.

Re: The Apple Thread

If anyone has an older iPad that's sluggish and freezing, check out this article:

http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/ipa...-ipad-3632709/

My iPad 2 was a mess. I was thinking I'd have to buy a new one. Then I followed the 10 steps in that article and it's running much, much better. It's just standard info on how to clean out all the crap that's clogging up your system. But if you follow the steps, you'll hopefully see some improvement.

Re: The Apple Thread

I disagree with the suggestion to upgrade the OS. In many cases, that can cause slow down on an older device.

My experience with the Touch is that it's an excellent low-cost alternative for games and music. However, like any iDevice, it will gradually stop working with new apps because you can only upgrade the ios for so long. I think the camera is pretty limited as well compared to a phone.

Re: The Apple Thread

I watched a few reviews on youtube and the newest model of the touch came out last July. It was updated from the model that came out three years ago. Buy the time I run into the problem of things being too slow, I hope by then I will be ready for an iphone.

there is no 9.2 jailbreak out yet. 9.2.1 was just released yesterday so if there is away to jailbreak it that is already fixed in the 9.3 beta, then a jailbreak could happen soon. If not, they'll likely wait until 9.3 is released (assuming the uber nerds have a working jailbreak)

Immediate con to me is capacity. The touch is far smaller than the classic I assume you had.

Capacity goes up to 128GB for $399 for the iPod Touch.
http://www.apple.com/shop/buy-ipod/ipod-touch

For comparison, when the iPod Classic 6th gen was released, the 160GB version retailed for $349:

my Macbook is running El Capitan and iPhoto won't update. I am on iPhoto 1.3 trying to install 9.6.1? It hasn't been able to update for a few months. Is there a work around or something to fix this issue? Ive tried to google but not much out there.

I guess it's not as much as I originally thought, still 30GB I wouldn't want to give up at this point.

So, iPhoto was end of lifed, I believe, and they came out with a new thing just called Photos. I don't think you can install iPhoto on El Capitan (I couldn't find it in the appstore)

Yeah, the Photos app was introduced in the 10.10.3 update. If you've upgraded from a previous version that had iPhoto, it'll still be installed, but the new Photos app will be there too. Once Photos is opened, it'll import the iPhoto library, at which point iPhoto won't open any more.

Re: The Apple Thread

Anyone ever had an issue with the home button not pressing all the way down? Recently happened with my wife's iPad and we're trying to figure out if there's anything we can do. She's been using that alternative one that you can bring up that just stays on your screen wherever you choose to put it.

Does it feel like it's physically difficult to press it down? I'm guessing it might be due to dirt around the edges of the button. Cleaning it with rubbing alcohol may fix it.

i dont about how to fix the physical button but an alternative to the alternative method you're using is just five-finger pinch the screen to get back 'home' and four-finger swipe up to get the multitasking tray.
