Dropbox works fine for my uses, not sure why I'd want to go through the trouble to switch unless Google offers significantly more disk space.

For me, it all depends on what kind of integration it has with Android. For example, if it automatically uploads photos from my Android devices and those photos don't count toward storage the limit, I'll probably be compelled to use it.

(I know that capability exists today with Google+, but I'd strongly prefer not to participate in a social network just to get that capability).

If you just want to have a backup in the cloud almost any provider is fine, box.net, dropbox, etc. SkyDrive gives you 25 GB.

If you want to be able to sync your files, that's a different world. Most people really like dropbox, even if it's the one that gives you the less space "out of the box", box.net and Skydrive give you 5 GB for example.

I think one appeal of "settling" for the service from google as opposed to better alternatives is that google is likely to be around in 5 years, and several of these cloud-type sites have already gone under iirc.

As I expected, they just made google docs bigger. I still like the Skydrive web UI better.

What's the max upload size - still 1GB?

So this pricing has completely disappeared. So strange, as that was taken directly from my own Google Drive account settings. The new pricing doesn't seem as good and has changed from yearly to monthly.

Those apparently were the old prices Google offered for storage. They have a help page showing the difference:

Actually they have full rights to any and all data you put on GDrive. They can actually use the content in any way they want, and that continues even after you cancel the service and 'delete' your data.

Yeah, I don't trust anything on a Google platform to be any more secure from inspection than it would be if I put it out in front of my house.
