Re: .rar?

rar is a compression/archive format similar to zip files. So you'll need to use a tool to extract the actual video file(s) from the rar file(s) that you have. There's a free command line tool for linux "unrar and rar" that works well, so I'm sure there's a version for OS X as well. Or there's probably a GUI tool for it, I'm sure.

To answer your next question, the best way to actually watch .mkv files on your mac is to use VLC.

I'm aware of the magic invention that is Google. The problem is that when you search for how to open said files, you get a million different programs telling you to download their software to open rar. files. I was wondering if the extra software is necessary, could anyone suggest a legitimate and reliable one, and if it's not necessary if they could specifically tell me how to open the files.

Edit: Thank you belboz.

Re: .rar?

download.cnet.com is probably the best site to find these types of programs. They have all been checked and verified, so you won't get some awful virus when you download a free program.

I use a program called RAR Expander for my Mac.

Re: .rar?

I use UnRarX for my Mac, but RAR Expander is also a good one.

Re: .rar?

WinRAR is probably the best. It says you have to buy after a 40-day trial, but you don't. You simply close the buy-prompt window.

Edit: Sorry, I missed the part about your having a Mac.

Re: .rar?

rar is closed format, there was a open-source u*ix app called "unrar" but it does not handle newer version of rar. Theoretically only WinRAR can create rar archive files, all other unzippers (including 7-zip) have to use unrar.dll (provided by WinRAR) to extract files.

Re: .rar?

The Unarchiver works great and handles a ton of formats.

That's because you need software to open them. The fact that you referred to a RAR as a "video file" suggests that you didn't really do much research at all.
