Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

Just installed CyanogenMod 9 (ICS) on my Epic 4G hoping to squeeze some extra life out of it. Why the hell did I wait so long to do this?

If there was a stable Jellybean version I would install that no question.

Are you switching carriers? You can typically upgrade before your contract is up; anywhere from a few weeks to a few months beforehand.

If you're referring to your upgrade date, you could try calling your carrier and seeing if they'd bump up your upgrade date. A difference of a week isn't likely to concern them.

if you are on sprint, you can get an even better deal.
there is a strong rumour that the sprint S3 will be on sale for $50 for black friday.

If you are on Verizon, you can upgrade 20 months into a 2 year contract directly from Verizon, however, third party may require differently. You can call and ask to see if they would reset your upgrade date.

I am on sprint with a SERO plan. I'm not sure if I can. It may be worth waiting to see if there is a sale on BF, but I have been more than a little tired of my Optimus S for a while now.

This page suggests you're not eligible for early upgrade:
https://manage.sprintpcs.com/special...bateWelcome.do

Also, it looks like upgrading a SERO line at Best Buy is tricky, if not impossible. Do you have SERO or SERO P?

The article funmanstan linked to explains that the reason for no LTE is tied to the reasoning for no CDMA; namely, there's no such thing as an unlocked CDMA radio:

Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

I understand, it just sucks for those of us on cdma especially since Verizon doesn't allow you to get subsidized 2 year upgrade pricing and keep unlimited data.

I waited forever for a new phone because I wanted the next Nexus, and now I can't/won't get it. Thanks cell phone carriers.

If Google made the only Android phone on the market, they'd have the same ability, alas they don't.

What do other Android phones have to do with it, besides diluting the market with Android handsets? At it's core, it still boils down to a leverage issue doesn't it? The Nexus line alone doesn't have the widespread desirability required to force the carriers hand, right?

Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

In the midst of all the new hardware news, there's also some great news on the Google Play content front:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-575...t-powerhouses/

In a nutshell, they now have all the major hollywood studios and music labels on board for content in Google Play, in addition to adding some big magazine publishers. Sounds like some of the major content holes in the Google Play store will now be filled.

I think RichC2's point kind of meshes with yours; that if there weren't other Android phones out there, the carriers would just listen or do whatever Google wanted and they would have more control like Apple. That's not the case, so there's probably more push back from carriers wanting to manage things their own way since they don't rely on Google directly.

Google seems like they want to develop and release stuff as they see fit, not having to wait for a carrier like Verizon to do their thing. Google also obviously isn't building hardware directly like Apple is, so that would mean working with whatever OEM to make different versions for major carriers. Probably not cost effective for Google without their own hardware manufacturing, and it's easy for them to release one model (or two, considering the storage) with a radio that works for countries all over the world in a single instance.

Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

Pretty much. If there were only Nexus phones and no others, Google would be able to dictate what they wanted to the providers as well.

Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

Yeah. I guess the other issue is that Google has (re)comitted to the Nexus phone being offered unlocked only. Even the unlocked iPhone 5 doesn't work with CMDA-based carriers.

Verizon has amazing coverage which is why I keep them, but they are a bit frustrating and CDMA pisses me the hell off.

Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

I dropped my Motorola Photon phone and cracked the screen. This has never happened to me. I had Sprint's protection plan but they wanted $100 for a replacement. I said fuck it and went to Best Buy and got the Photon Q 4g LTE for about the same price with their Geek squad plan. So we'll see how all that works out.

I was bummed because some of my back ups on the SD card aren't working on the new phone. Oh well...
