Trying to keep in touch with friends in Japan and it's proving expensive on Skype...
Anyone have a Google Voice invite they can send my way?

i don't have one, but have you looked at phone cards? i know people that buy phone cards to call eastern europe and it's like $5 for 1000 minutes

Last month it was taking only a few days to receive one.

i signed up. didn't get a new number. used the voice mail. the feature to give you text/email of the message sucks. it's never even close to what the person said. i might just disable it since it's not accurate at all.

There is an app for it, but you still need an account. As I understand, its by invite only.

maybe i'm too old, but what exactly is the point of Google Voice except the cool VM? i tried to call via the web app on my iphone today and it made me dial some 518 number so i can call home. i could have just done it directly

Short of the virtual phone number that I really don't use I like it for the VM feature. I hate Verizon's default VM and the hoops and number pushing and deleting messages only for them to make me delete them again a few weeks later. While the visual VM isn't that good I like that it e-mails me notifications.

1. Voicemail transcription, can access from anywhere with no fee, save, forward.
2. One number for life, although less valuable now with phone number portability
3. When someone calls the Google number, if you'd like, all of your phones ring (home, work, cell, vacation, any phone). So people don't need to guess which phone to call you at.
