Burning a AVI file on DVD Problem--No Audio--Need Help

Hey guys,

I have a AVI file that's pretty big on my comp. After I started playing it, I noticed there was no sound, and the WMP stated I needed a AC3 Filter codec.

I downloaded it, and the sound is great on the computer--everything works fine.

But when I go to burn the dual layer DVD (file is big), I pop the DL DVD into my PS3 and only the video plays--no audio.

I try to play it in another player, too, and same situation happens. Any help would be great. My first thought was that the PS3 or DVD player needs the same codec installed to play the audio on the dvd properly--like my computer needed.

If so, is there any way to do that? I don't have my PS3 hooked to the Internet...is there a way to burn a codec to a CD or dvd and have this work? Is it another issue I'm not seeing?

Thanks!

I'd suggest you visit VideoHelp.com. Check out their forum, guides and tools. They specialize in this stuff.

Did you just put the AVI file on a DVD disc, or did you convert the AVI to DVD?

You need burning/encoding software that supports AC3. What are you using now? Why not burn the AVI file on a DVD as a data disc? The PS3 plays AVI files. Do any of your DVD players support DIVX?

Re: Burning a AVI file on DVD Problem--No Audio--Need Help

Thanks guys.

What I originally did was burn the AVI file as a DVD--meaning it wasn't as a data disc. Would a data disc work better in this case? What's the difference...why would a data disc possibly work over converting it to a DVD.

And I was using Ulead DVD Moviefactor 6, and I just grabbed the entire AVI file, chose not to create a menu for it, and burned straight to DVD.

And along with my PS3, I have a Panasonic DMR-EZ485V dvd recorder.

On Amazon's page for the Panasonic DMR-EZ485V, it states it supports DIVX:

* 1080p Upconversion via HDMI
* Multi Format playback: DVD, DivX, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD, CD-R, CD-RW

So what am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably a codec problem with your PC.

I don't like to recommend downloading codec packs, because screwing around with codecs can mess-up your computer. However, every time I get a new computer or reinstall Windows, I find that the K-Lite Codec Pack solves all my video/audio problems.

ok when you're burning the file and making it into a DVD you are rencoding the file to make it DVD standard (and probably losing quality) at the same time.
If you burn the file itself on a disc (without converting it to DVD standard), you're basically just putting the raw file onto a disc (no quality loss).

A codec problem with the PC even if the video and audio plays fine on the PC?

And are you saying that I should simply burn this file as a data disc?

No, there is no codec problem on your PC. If the file has AC3 audio and you are not getting audio AFTER you make it into a DVd then you do not have an AC 3 plugin for the program you are using to convert it to DVD.

When you use MovieFactory, does the audio play correctly in the Preview stage? Did you create the DVD folders and then play it on your computer before burning it to disc?

Thanks for your help, guys. I burned it as a data disc and that has fixed the problem. I'm still not sure why that worked, though.

Re: Burning a AVI file on DVD Problem--No Audio--Need Help

I had this problem with some software once upon a time and when I looked under the options or tools or somewhere for the software I found that I had "Record Video" checked and "Record Audio" not checked. Once I checked the "Record Audio" box it worked fine! This might have been with Sony's "sonic" software.
