Apple is following the same strategy except that it will depend on accessory makers to sell you add ons so your iphone can tell you the mineral content of your sweat or how cute your smile is

Re: Defunct Technology or Websites that You Miss?

What a lovely cocktail the Internet Bubble (with vast amounts of venture capital) and the infancy of DVD made: www.reel.com and their generous coupons and aggressively priced pre-releases with free shipping. I picked up so many of my DVDs for for $2-3 apiece. Paying more on average would have meant wearing a badge of shame in the forums.

*sigh*

I can't remember the website but it ran the old Monty Hall "Let's Make a Deal" which resulted in a lot of free DVDs and other items.

As others have mentioned -- ValueAmerica and their crazy pricing, coupons, etc.

Oh heck yes. Did you listen to the radio drama that they made which picked up right after Overseer? Unfortunately, it ended on a cliffhanger!

Those Tex Murphy games were great. I was so pissed when Microsoft purchased Access because it also resulted in the elimination of the best golf game ever made, Links 386 Pro.

If you liked the Tex Murphy games you should enjoy 'Three Cards to Midnight" from Big Finish Games. http://www.bigfinishgames.com/
It's only $20.00 and is really fun to play. The game was designed by Chris Jones (who played Tex Murphy) and Aaron Connoers.

Addition note: You can buy all the orginals games from GOG.com

Awesome, thanks! I've got Killing Moon, Pandora Directive, and Overseer on discs, but it's nice to know that there are cheap versions out there that are compatible with XP if I can't get 'em running.

DVD Angle - My number one source for DVD reviews (obviously before I found out about this place). There was a server crash one day and the site never returned.
Reel.com - my God, the deals!

Not really a defunct technology or website, but I miss the days when everyone DIDN'T have a cell phone.

Re: Defunct Technology or Websites that You Miss?

One website that I really do miss is the old Games Domain. It had columnists who knew what they were writing about and could write clearly. Its reviews were always interesting. And its coverage of adventure games was second to none.

OMG! Was that like 30 year ago? I remember a guy who worked for Radio Shack back in 1982 that was on this.

What about the days when Computer Shopper was like the Yellow Pages. I remember picking this up and it would not fit in my backpack.

I'm pretty sure those counselors made up their hobbies.

A late thanks for the heads up on Big Finish Games. I had no idea Aaron Connors and Chris Jones got back into PC gaming. Their first effort looks like a good one.

Uh, no. I still run multiple OS 9 machines at work, and I will be happy to explain to you how its (optional) application memory management actually works.

We also keep Windows 95 and NT 3.51 terminals around because we have to. Certain vendors didn't (or couldn't) update their RIP applications, but the equipment attached to them still works fine over 12 years later.
