AVG not free anymore?

Hi,

AVG updated its' version to 8.5, and after checking their homepage, I can't find a free version anymore. The only thing they seem to be offering is a 30 day trial of 8.5.

7.5 will not be supported after April 30 anymore. Any suggestion on good anti virus software (free) that I should use now that AVG is not free anymore? Thanks.

I just downloaded it yesterday, and it's still free.

As far as I can tell there's still a free version available.

This is interesting. From the "official" website, www.avg.com, I can't see a single link going to free.avg.com, so if one doesn't know the free URL, one wouldn't find it at all. Thanks for this.

Regardless, I am also investigating other anti-virus. Any ideas on what other free apps there are out there? Does anybody have any experience (pro/cons) with:

avast
avira
any others I should try?

Just my .02 and say what you will about the pay for service products, but how effective do you think a free product can be?

I use McAfee and like the service

Avira - Antivir Free

http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1...antivirus.html

Avast Antivirus Free

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Plus you could look into your IP providing Antivirus Free, like Comcast providing Mcafee for free.

They have been doing this trick for years... I remember I had to use google to find that free.avg.com site two years ago.

Re: AVG not free anymore?

I was about to open a separate thread on this topic, but I might as well hook my question onto this one.
Just got a new computer. We have the option of getting Norton for free through our ISP. We had Norton on the old PC and were relatively satisfied with it. However, I have heard people complain about problems with it.
Question is, is it advisable to take the commercial product Norton, or download one of the highly-rated freeware programs like AVG, Avira, or Avast instead? If the latter option, which is best?

Re: AVG not free anymore?

If you get Norton Antivirus Corporate edition (unlikely free from ISP though), you should pick that; if you get Norton AV personal version (such as 2009), that's the one people complaining about and you probably want to skip it.

I am runing Avira Free on my Windows 2000 workstation, besides it needs me to click [OK] on the nag screen with every update, it works fine.

Re: AVG not free anymore?

Thanks for that, lxl. I'm not sure which version of Norton is on offer for free, as I haven't looked into it yet, but you're probably right that it's not the corporate edition.
So even some of these freeware antivirus programs come with frequent updates for which one is prompted? That's a bonus.

AV without updates doesn't do you any good... You can schedule AVG updates in the free version. You can't schedule them as often as you can with the paid version, but you can schedule them.

^^I'm sure that's good enough for us. We're not all that active on the internet, downloading left and right and whatnot.

Re: AVG not free anymore?

I've been using AVG for over 5 years. Never had a virus hit my computer. Of course, it depends on your witty surfing habits.

Re: AVG not free anymore?

I didn't have any problems with avg stopping viruses. I had problems with AVG thinking some files were virus that weren't and having no way to stop it from moving those files to a safe. These were just game plugins but it cost me a lot of time in having to reinstall and redownload add ons and mods.

Re: AVG not free anymore?

I'll second Avast. Used it for several years, easy to set up, updates itself (allot to) and does the job without being a PC Hog like many others.

Been running the Free version of AVG and am looking around for better alternatives. I'm trying out Avira right now.
