When I click on a Google link it takes me to spam??

Whenever I search in Yahoo or Google and click on one of the search results it takes me to a spam site instead of the link I wanted - everytime.

I scanned my computer with AVG virus and Ad-Aware but it doesnt detect anything malicious!?

Whats going on

Re: When I click on a Google link it takes me to spam??

C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

Right click on the hosts file and open with notepad - the hosts file is like an address...nevermind - just delete every IP you see with the exception of 127.0.0.1 (if shown).

You DL\Opened a bad file that redirects your browser - I just had this recently, the redirection first takes place from "Myfebruary.com" - I highly recommend just doing the following if you don't make changes often to your machine (this will work):

Start --> programs --> accessories --> system tools --> system restore

Choose a date to restore to before you experienced the issue - if you don't remember when it occured, just pick the earliest date - system restore is reversible and will not affect any of your documents.

Good luck - I'm too impatient to troublshoot bullshit like that so I always just do a system restore.

Re: When I click on a Google link it takes me to spam??

It's spyware. I found a tool that will remove it - I will look tomorrow and see if I can find it again. Spybot did nothing to remove it ither, it had a specific tool.

Re: When I click on a Google link it takes me to spam??

Off topic, but can someone please explain the purpose of the Hosts file? It seems the only thing it does is allow spyware/adware/malware/viruses to fuck up your computer. Do other operating systems have a similar file? (Linux, Mac OS, Unix, etc) Just wondering.

It's basically an attempt by Microsoft to make windows appear to have a legitimate, or sophisticated Naming Service running in the OS. Windows does not have that, just a stupid hosts file that as you said works mostly to allow malware authors and easy way to screw things up.

Just rename or delete the hosts file at any time if you want.

OP you have malware running. If you want to clear it out an prevent it in the future get Spyware Doctor. $30 a year and it's the best.

it's a left over from the quaint unix days of the early 1980's before DNS. to resolve a name to IP you had to modify your hosts file. it's part of the tcp/ip spec so everyone includes it

Re: When I click on a Google link it takes me to spam??

I use the hosts file as a low-level system-wide ad blocker of sorts. It isn't a replacement for ad blocking browser plugins but it does help cut down on unnecessary traffic.

As al_bundy pointed out, it's not a MS specific implementation, but rather a hold-over that all current OS have, even the iPhone:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Host_fi...efault_content

Windows Server does have a DNS service; it recently had to be patched:

Spybot also uses it to "immunize" your system against accessing certain malware sites.

What?

The hosts file is not from the 'quaint unix days of the early 1980's'. That's a wacky assertion that is not in any way accurate.

The hosts file on a modern UNIX OS serves a purpose. Windows does not implement Name Services like any other OS. If you ever read a book on DNS on Windows, like the one published by O'Reilly, you'll understand why.

Well, he's off by about a decade, since hosts files were commonly used in the days of ARPANET, in the 70s. DNS was created in the mid-80s, but since it took a while to propagate, people may well remember still using host files commonly in the 80s as well.

The same purpose it served on older UNIX systems, and the same purpose it serves on Windows: to resolve host names into addresses without checking DNS.

Windows does have a Name Service, and it has many of the same features as other DNS implementations:

The host file is not used for Microsoft's DNS.

Run a Hijack This search on your computer, then post the resulting log file here and we can see what it is.

Re: When I click on a Google link it takes me to spam??

Are the search results being replaced with AntiVirus2009 results?

http://www.spywareremove.com/removeXPAntispyware2009.html

I have had around 4 PCs in the last six months at work get this crap. Three of them I managed to removed it (NOT EASY) and one of them I ended up just wiping and reloading everything.

Your DNS entries got hijacked. Use HijackThis to remove these entries:
