Help me with an itunes problem please
Let me just say up front that I know I am late to the Ipod/Itunes party.
I finally got an Ipod, and I want to transfer my CD collection onto Itunes on my computer, and then onto the Ipod. so here's my problem-- I added Bob Seger, Bob Dylan, and Tom Petty Greatest Hits CDs to my itunes library. Unfortunately since these CDs came out in the 90s, itunes listed the songs according to the year of the CD release, not when the song was originally released. I went into the Song Information and individually changed each song to its correct release date For example, I changed Seger's " Night Moves" to 1977 and I changed the genre to Classic Rock. But itunes is updating the songs and changing the info back. (ie, with Seger it changed the year to 1994 and the genre to Popular.) Obviously what I want to do is create playlists of Classic Rock and /or songs from certain years or decades. How can I stop itunes from updating/changing this information? |

I apologize. I guess this should have been in Tech Talk.
If a mod would move it. |

If you ever figure it out, Night Moves is 1976.

Re: Help me with an itunes problem please
Since you're breaking the album Greatest Hits released in 1994 apart into new years, iTunes and, more likely, CDDB defaults are getting confused. Some say one thing and others say another under the same album name.
Just a hunch, the problem likely lies in the track numbers. Try removing track numbers from each song. ![]() ![]() Last edited by Adboy151; 01-07-09 at 11:54 AM. |

Re: Help me with an itunes problem please
My first idea was to change the album title. It probably came up as "Bob Seger: Greatest Hits" or something like that. Just changing that might prevent it from being altered, as iTunes will no longer consider it the same album.
Also, consider going into Edit > Preferences. Uncheck "Automatically retrieve CD names from Internet." You'll have to manually enter all your information, but the plus side is, you get to enter what you want. Still, I don't have that unchecked and I don't have your problem, so there's another setting that's off, somewhere. |

Re: Help me with an itunes problem please
Thank you all for the suggestions.
I've done the track number and album name changes. I'm hesitant to do the Uncheck "Automatically retrieve CD names from Internet." because I like that convenience and I'm just starting out to put my CDs on the computer. I will see what works and let you know. ![]() |

Re: Help me with an itunes problem please
Are you changing the year before you import the tracks? I generally change it after I've imported them.
Almost every cd I've ever put into itunes has come up with the correct years, except for greatest hits. After I've imported the disc, I change the individual tracks to when they were originally released. |

It's only been a day but so far altering the CD title and erasing the track number has worked. |
